Student enrollment for the Hawai‘i Private Schools: 2018-2019 School Year

The 2018-2019 Tuition Report has a few changes this year:
• The schools on Oahu are placed into four districts: Honolulu, Windward, Central, and Leeward in effort to align with the Hawai‘i Public School Districts.
• Schools that closed at the end of the 2017-2018 SY were removed from the 2018-2019 Enrollment Report.
• Only the schools that were open in 2018-2019 SY were included when comparing them to 2016/2017 SY and 2017/2018 SY
• Moving forward a school will be removed from the Enrollment Report the year after closing. Overview – Statewide For 2018-2019, Hawai‘i’s 103 licensed and/or accredited private schools are reporting a total enrollment of 34,808 students in grades PS-12, down 646 (-1.82%) from last year’s total of 35,454. Not included are 13 currently unlicensed private schools and 25 private non-profit preschools that are licensed by the Department of Human Services. Overview – Oahu
• Honolulu district reported 19,287, down 335 students (-1.71%) from last year’s total of 19,622.
• Central district reported 2,418 down 196 students (-7.50%) from last year’s total of 2,614.
• Leeward district reported 2,458, down 23 students (-.93%) from last year’s total of 2,481.
• Windward district reported 2,402 down 33 students (-1.36%) from last year’s total of 2,435. Overall, Oahu schools reported enrollment of 26,565, down 587 students (-2.16) from last year’s total of 27,152.
Overview – Neighbor Islands
• Hawai’i reported 3,444 students, down 50 students (-1.43%) from last year’s total of 3,494.
• Maui reported 3,647 students, up 11 students (.30%) from last year’s total of 3,636.
• Kauai reported 718 students, down 9 students (-1.24%) from last year’s total of 727.
• Molokai reported 42 students, down 3 students (-6.67%) from last year’s total of 45. Overall, neighbor island schools reported enrollment of 7,851, down 51 students (-.65%) from last year’s total of 7,902.
Overview – Special Purpose Schools Three “special purpose” schools reported enrollment of 392 students, down 8 students (-2.00%) from last year’s total of 400 students. (Assets School, Variety School, Horizons Academy)

Analysis of Increases and Decreases in Enrollment
• Oahu: 31 schools reported enrollment the same or increasing. 37 schools reported enrollment decreasing. Of Oahu Schools with decreasing enrollments:
▪ 17 had decreases less than 5% ▪ 10 had decreases of 5.1% - 10% ▪ 9 had decreases of 10.1% - 20% ▪ 1 had decreases of more than 20%
• Neighbor Islands: 19 schools reported enrollment remaining the same or increasing. 16 reported enrollment decreasing. Of neighbor island schools with decreasing enrollments:
• 6 had decreases less than 5%
• 4 had a decreases of 5.1%-10%
• 2 had decreases of 10.1% - 20%
• 4 had decreases of 20%
