Other SideFace what you must face

(A beautiful story from Mahabharata)

I am just reminded of asmall story, an episode fromMahabharata whereKrishnaand Balarama are going to theforest and by then the sun hadalready set and it grew dark.No huts or resting inns were tobe found.

So, it seems Krishna cameup with a proposal toBalarama, I will go to sleepand you keep watching me.Whenever you feel sleepy, youwake me up and Ill keepwatching and you can go tosleep.

Krishna went to sleep,Balaramawho kept moving toand fro, encountered amonsterin the forest who screamed atBalarama. AndBalaramawhowas shaken up by the monster, shrank in size and the monsterbecamebigger thanBalarama.

Themonster screamed onemore time, Balarama shrankeven further and the monsterbecame even bigger.

One last attempt, theMonster screamed atBalarama, unable to take themight of themonsterBalarama

screamed Krishna and hefainted. Hearing the callKrishna, Krishna woke up.

Though Balarama hadfainted, he mistook Balaramato be sleeping and Krishnastarted walking to and fro.

So the monster which nowsawanewperson standing therescreamed at him onemore time.

And it seems that Krishnainstead of being perturbed, stared at themonster and asked:What do you want ?

The Couragemade KrishnaexpandandMonster shrink. Themonster once again screamedatKrishna, Krishna again askedtheMonster what do youwant?

The monster shrank evenfurther. And Krishna expandedeven more. One last attempt,

Monster screamed at Krishnaand Krishna again asked themonster what do you want? And the monster shrunk verymuch in size.

The Epic goes, Krishna tooktheMonster in his hand, ties theMonster inside the end of hisdhoti, by a knot.

The Sun did rise andBalaramaandKrishna began towalk. And as they werewalking, Balarama said Didyou know what happened lastnight. A monster came and itwas threatening us so much.

Krishna gently took themonster out of his Dhoti andshowed it to Balarama andasked Are you talking aboutthis?

Immediately Balaramaexclaims but when I saw it, itwas sobigbut now it hasbecomeso small.

And the Veda Vyasa throughthe voice of Krishna says When you avoid what you mustface in life, it becomes biggerthan you and takes control overyou.

The monster here is all thechallenges we face in life. If youkeep avoiding what you mustface, these challenges becomemonstrous and take control overyou.

Whenyou facewhat youmustface, you become bigger than itand you take control over it.

Alwaysremember, challengesare been given to you for apurpose for you to becomewhat you can become.

Protect children from Air PollutionBy Consultant Pediatrician Dr. Priya Chandrasekhar

It is very disheartening toread thateveryfourthchild losesits life because of air pollutionand its effects. India, attainedfreedom in 1947, but free air, water and freedom fromdiseases are what we shouldactually get. Recently, theadministrators of the nationalcapital had asked people toactuallystay indoorsandnotusetheir vehicles (the Odd/EvenRule) because the air pollutionindex there had crossed thepermissible levels and touchedthe dangerous mark.

While Delhi is soonbecoming the most pollutedcity in the world, the otherIndian cities are not far behindand sooner than later, wemight also be facing the similarscenario. How do we rectifyormanage this situation?Hereare a few tips for parents andchildren that will help thembreathe and live healthier:

1. Make sure as a family, you and the children wake upearly and exercise. Taking inlung fulls of fresh air isessential to remove the toxicantioxidants from the body.Exercise increases thehormones that stimulate theimmune system therebyhelping to decrease theinfection.

2.Yoga and pranayama, inparticular, helps in learning tobreathe the right manner andin turn improves theoxygenation to the entirebody.

3. Train the kids to walk/

cycle to the school (if nearby).Car pooling or use of publictransport helps lesserconsumption of fuel, which inturn reduces the emission ofsulphur dioxide andother toxicgases.

4. Kids love balloons! Getyour kids to blow balloons, ifthey are too young to practiseyoga and pranayama. Thishelps in improving their lungcapacity.

5. Teach kids to sneeze or

cough sideways- directing attheir elbows or shoulder, rather than directly in theirhands. This helps reduce thedeposition of bacteria on thehands (palmar surfaces) and

helps reduce the spread ofinfection.

6. Teach kids theimportance of handwash. Weall harbour enough virus andbacteria in our throats andnose (not necessarily only

when sick). Simplemethods like adequateand necessaryhandwashing canprevent transmissionof respiratoryinfections.

7. India leads inrespiratory diseases inchildren, andsubsequent mortalitydue to increased ratesof pneumonia. Letslook to reverse thattrend or reduce thenumbers with the nextgeneration.

8. Air purifiers andhumidifiers can help reducethe indoor pollutants, whichaccount for a significant rateof the poor air quality index.Find out the best ones in the

market before youpurchase for yourhome.

9. Make surey o u rrefrigerator and airconditioners areCFC (Chlorofluorocarbons) free. Tryavoiding insectrepellant sprays andmosquito repellantcoils that are knownto emit harmfultoxins that irritatechildrens throat.

10.Make sure you get yourchild adequatelyimmunised against diseaseslike pneumonia and influenza.Investing in good health ismore important than financialinvestments.

Lets remember that ahealthy child in a healthyhousein a healthy neighbourhoodwill be the seed for a healthyIndia!

World Health Organisationrings alarm bell!

WHOReports:World Health Organization has come up with a report

recently that has sent shock waves across the world. Thebiggest epidemic that mankind has ignored for far too long isair pollution. The recent report states how air pollution claimsaround 1.7 million children every year.

Two reports were released have given us these startlingand worrisome- numbers. The first report- Inheriting aSustainable World: Atlas on Childrens Health and theEnvironment explains how one in every four children (up tothe age of 5) lose their lives due to pollution-related risks suchas dirty water, poor sanitation, inadequate hygiene, and airpollution.

The extensive report describes how environmental riskscan reduce a range of ailments and diseases from neonatal toadults. From low birth weight to congenital abnormalities ininfants, to diarrhoea and food poisoning in toddlers, and chronicrespiratory diseases in children, the report claims howa quarterof childhood deaths and disease can be attributed toenvironmental risks and pollution, in particular.

Of the leading causes of death among children under 5years, pneumonia forms 13% of the total deaths amongthe post neonatal category. The report takes into account thechanges in themajor environmental hazards to childrens healthover the last 13 years, due to increasing urbanisation, industrialisation, globalisation and climate change, as well asefforts in the health sector to reduce childrens environmentalexposures.

The other report named- Dont pollute my future! Theimpact of the environment on childrens healthWHO brokedown the issue into the following numbers and statistics:

570,000 children under 5 die each year from respiratoryinfections, such as pneumonia, due to indoor and outdoor airpollution and second-hand smoke.

361,000 children under 5 die each year due to diarrhoearesulting from lack of access to cleanwater, and poor sanitationand hygiene.

270,000 children worldwide die each before they reachonemonth old.

200,000 childhood deaths from malaria could beprevented with better sanitation and mosquito-controlmeasures.

200,000 children under age 5 die from unintentionalinjuries attributable to hazardous environments, includingpoisonings, falls and drowning.

The report explains prolonged exposure to high levels ofair pollution can cause stunted brain development, reducedlung functioning, triggering asthma, chronic respiratorydiseases, cardiovascular diseases and even chances of strokeand cancer.

It states how children ingest more food, drink more waterand breathe more air than adults.Additionally, certain modesof behaviour, such as putting hands and objects into themouthand playing outdoors can increase childrens exposure toenvironmental contaminants.

The report also brings to light a worrying aspect of thefuture with more than 11-14% of children aged 5 and abovehave symptoms of asthma and how the immune systems andthe airways are affected at a younger age due to prolongedexposure to polluted environments.

As dutiful citizens, it is up to us to act on this pressingissue and act NOW!

Ventilation has to do withair supply inside buildings.Ventilation essentially is thereplacement of used air by a

supplyoffreshoutdoorair. Italsodeals with the quality ofincoming air with regard to itstemperature, humidity andpurity. Good ventilation shouldensurea thermal environment inthe interiors that is comfortableand free from risk of infection.

What happens to air inoccupied rooms?

There are some interestingaspects to the atmospherewithin buildings, especiallywhen occupied.

The changes in air in aconfined place are bothchemical and physical.

Keeping homes coooool!

When there people in aroommore carbon di-oxide isreleased into their. It has beenobserved that in a mixed

gathering each person exhales0.6 c ft of carbon di-oxideevery hour. These are thechemical changes involved.

The room heats upperceptibly. Humidityincreases because of thesweat and the exhaled air.Sweat also produces odour. The flowof air is impeded andthis makes the room stuffy.People also release bacteriainto the air, when they coughor sneeze. All these causephysical changes in the air.

Apart from this, veryspecific pollutants are found

inside rural and urbanbuildings.

Many of us feeluncomfortable in crowdedroomswithout reallybeingableto say what it is that annoysus. The above factors, apartfrom psychological, areresponsible for this annoyancefactor. In poorly ventilatedrooms people feel unable toconcentrate, complain ofdrowsiness and headaches. This is called the SickBuildingSyndrome. People who live orwork in such places are moreprone to infection.

A change of Air

Ahuman being needs 3000cft of fresh air each hour.

Air Change: Air change ismore important than the cubicspace requirement. It isrecommended that in a livingroom, there should be 2 or 3air changes and in workroomthere should be 4 to 6 airchanges.

Floor space: Floor spaceper person is equally important. The optimum floor spacerequirements per person varyfrom 50 to 100 sq. Ft.

Enhancing NaturalVentilationA house should have the

following devices to enhancenatural ventilation.

Windows- Windows let inair. When a window and anopen door (or a biggerwindow) are placed in linewith each other unequalpressure is created and airmoves from one opening toanother. This is called crossventilation and this ensuresfresh air supply.

Screens, jalis - Airdiffuses through fine meshes. These are preferred whereprivacy is required. But herethe process is slow and needsto be supplementedwith othertypes of ventilation.

Ventilators - These areexcellent devices to keep theair circulating. They work onthe theory of convection. Airflows from an area of highdensity to an area of lowdensity; it rises when slightlyheated and escapes fromopeningsprovidedhighupin theroom and enters through inletsplaced low. A narrow openinghigh up on the wall keeps theroom cool in summer.

Artificial Ventilation :The following induce

artificial ventilation:

Exhaust Fans

Centrifugal fans

Air Conditioners

Exhaust Fans :Air is extracted or

exhausted to the outside byexhaust fans usually operated

electrically. As air is exhausted,a vacuum is created whichinduces fresh air to enter theroom throughwindows, doorsand other inlets.

Centrifugal Fans :Fresh air is blown into the

room by centrifugal fans so asto create a positive pressure

and displacethe used air.S om e t i m e scentrifugal aswell asexhaust fansare used.

AirConditioning:A i r

conditionersare now usedto keep

temperatures down. Airconditioners were invented topurify air in the interiors. Airconditioning is becoming apopular cooling andventilating

system in homes.

Health has always been amatter of great concern andthe recently framedNationalHealthcare Policy goes toprove that right. But, sadly, notmuch importance has beengiven to the topic of mentalwell-being, because of thesocial taboos and stigmasattached to it.

Especially, in a countrywitha spirallingpopulationandgrossly insufficient medicalattention, the need to addresspressing medical and healthrelated issues is always a toppriority. Hence the MentalHealth Care Bill that wasrecentlypassed inRajyaSabhahas beenwell received by thegeneral public and the healthcare providers.

Here are the salientfeatures of theMental HealthCareBill:

1. Assures every personthe right to access mentalhealth care and treatment

from health services run orfunded by theGovt.

2. The bill assures freetreatment for mentally-illpersons if they are homelessor poor, even if they do notpossess aBelowPovertyLinecard.

3. Thebillhasapatient-centric approach with theaimof increasingparticipationof service users.

4. Suicide is a mentaldisease. Itwillnotbeacriminalact, itwill be decriminalised. Itrecognises that it is doneundersevere mental stress, J PNadda said.

5. The bill also providesthat a person with mentalillness will have the right tomake an advance directive inwriting specifying theway thepersonwishes to be cared forand treated for a mentalillness.

6. The Mental

HealthcareBill recognises therole of caregivers as thosewho can be appointed as anominated representative of amentally ill person, membersof the CentralMental HealthAuthority and State MentalHealth Authorities, ormembers of Mental HealthReviewBoards.

7. The MentalHealthcare Bill also providesmentally ill people a right toconfidentiality in respect ofmental health, mentalhealthcare, treatment andphysical healthcare.Photographs or any otherinformation pertaining to theperson cannot be released tothemediawithout the consentof the person with mentalillness.

8. The governmentwillset up aCentralMentalHealthAuthority at the national leveland a State Mental HealthAuthority inevery state.Everymental health institute and

mental health practitionersincludingclinicalpsychologists, mental health nurses andpsychiatric socialworkerswillhave to be registeredwith thisAuthority.

9. A Mental HealthReview Board will beconstituted toprotect the rightsof personswithmental illnessand manage advancedirectives.

10. Under the MentalHealthcare Bill, thepunishment for flouting ofprovisionswill attract up to sixmonths in prisonorRs10,000fine or both.Repeat offenderscan face up to two years injail or a fine of Rs 50,000 toRs 5 lakh or both.

Recently, the PrimeMinister addressed thenation on the topic ofmentalwellness in his Mann KiBaat. Heres a summary ofwhat he spoke on this topic:

Depression can be theroot cause of many mentaland physical ailments. Justas diabetes can be the rootcause of all sorts ofdiseases, depression too, destroys all our abilities tosustain, to fight, to displaycourage and to take adecision. Your friends, yourfamily, your surroundings, and environment, all thesecan prevent you from going

into depression and if youunfortunately has gone intoit, they can also pull you outof it. There is another way.If you are unable to expressyourself to your family andfriends, then do one thing,go out in society with asense of service.

Devote yourself with allyour heart into helpingothers and sharing their joysand sorrows. You will findthat along with it your owninner sufferings will go ondisappearing. If you try tosympathise with thesufferings of others with asense of service, a new self-confidence will be bornwithin you. By connectingwith others, serving themand serving them selflessly, you will easily be able toshed the weight oppressingyour own heart and mind.

Yoga too is a good meansfor mental well-being. Yogahelps in relieving tensionand stress, and leads onetowards a happy state ofmind. 21st June is theInternational Day of Yoga. This will be the third year ofits observance. You allshould start preparing for itright away. Collective Yogafestivals should becelebrated with theparticipation of millions.
