How ToRide the Bus
The following steps will help you plan your trip:
1. Look at the System Route Map on the back of this booklet to determine what routes are necessary to get you from your origin to your destination.
2. Find the schedule on the following pages that corresponds to your needed routes.
3. Determine your direction of travel.
4. Select the route schedule that matches your direction of travel.
5. Identify your departure and destination timepoints.
6. Look down the column of times from your departure point then across to identify your arrival time. (Many people find it easier to plan a trip by working backwards from the time they want to arrive at their final destination.)
7. Select the departing and arrival times that best suit your travel needs.
8. Arrive at the bus stop five minutes prior to the scheduled arrival time of the timepoint shown before your bus stop location. Before boarding, identify the route name, number and direction of travel, to ensure it is going to your destination. The bus route name and route number are on the front of the bus above the windshield and on the right hand side of the entrance to the bus. You may obtain and use a “Hailing Kit” if you have visual disabilities. (see page 8)
9. Make sure the bus operator can see you standing at the stop by facing the bus or by signaling with a small flashlight. Sometimes, especially during the winter months, it is difficult for bus operators to see you unless you signal them.
10. If the bus is not the route you need, and you are alone at the stop, wave the bus by with a wide motion.
11. Board the bus (alert the driver if you need the ramp deployed). Tell the bus operator if you wish to purchase a Day Pass. A Day Pass allows you unlimited rides on day of use.
12. Pay the fare, or show your bus pass.Put the exact fare or a bus token into thefare box. Operators do not have change.13. When the bus is approximately two blocks away from your stop, signal the driver to stop by pulling the cord above the window once.
14. Stay seated until the bus comes to a complete stop.
15. Exit using the rear door and stay clear of the bus after disembarking. Be alert as you get off the bus.
16. Bicyclers should notify the bus operator of the need to retrieve a bicycle and exit by the front doors.
17. Never cross the street in front of a public bus. Wait for the bus to pull away so you have a clear view of the street.
18. Cross at the cross walk or street corner, and wait for the WALK signal.Follow all pedestrian rules.
19. Most importantly, especially for first time riders, plan ahead and get the information you will need before you begin your trip.
There are several ways to get People Mover bus information:

WeatherWhen heavy snows or icy roads plague the Anchorage area, bus ridership increases. Icy roads, combined with heavy ridership, tend to slow down operations. There are several things you can do to make your ride more pleasant:
Listen to your radio for news broadcasts informing you about bus service.
Call the People Mover RideLine Information number: 343-6543.
Check BusTracker.muni.org to track were the bus is along its route.
Don’t expect your driver to pull the bus all the way over to the curb to pick you up; the driver could get stuck in the snow and possibly splash you with slush in the process. Walk to the bus after it stops.
Above all, please be patient and courteous to other passengers and the driver.
Books on BusesAs part of People Mover’s Books on Buses Program, youngsters can Ride and Read their way across Anchorage! All People Mover buses have a special, award-winning, KIDS READING ROOM area with a book rack and books suitable for school age students. Sit back, relax and let People Mover take you on your next trip while you read to your kids or let them read to you!

CWhen it comes to our safety, we can always use an extra pair of eyes. Look around. Be aware. Follow your instincts.............if something does not look right, let us know. Chances are it is probably nothing, but why leave our safety up to chance?
Let’s count on each other for a safe ride!

Enjoy Business Tax & Cost Savings by Offering Employee Transit Benefits.Promoting employee job satisfaction and improving environmental quality can be complicated tasks when you also have to keep an eye on the bottom line. Transit tax benefits offer you a number of ways to save money and increase worker productivity.
Tax SavingsOffering qualified transportation benefits can yield significant tax savings. The Federal Tax Code allows employers to offer their employees up to $230 per month in tax-free benefits for transit and vanpool passes. Alternatively, employees can set aside up to $230 per month pre-tax for transit or vanpool expenses. Tax savings alone typically outweigh the small implementation costs of these programs. Employers can offer three options to take advantage of tax-saving benefits:
can cover the full cost of the benefit.
can pay for transportation with pre-tax salary.
can share the cost of the benefit.
Helping employees save money can be an attractive benefit which reduces turnover and increases productivity. Employers then spend less time and money recruiting and training new employees. Carpool, vanpool, and transit users require less parking space, saving the company money on rent, construction, and maintenance.
For information about how to offer Employee Transit Benefits call 343-8435 or log on to www.peoplemover.org

VanpoolingAnchorage Share-a-Ride’s vanpool program provides alternate transportation for employees commuting to the Anchorage Bowl from Eagle River, Girdwood, and the Mat-Su Valley or from the Anchorage Bowl to Girdwood, Eagle River, or the Mat-Su area. Participants can join an established pool or form a new vanpool. Riders enjoy reasonable rates, comfortable vans, and the benefit of convenient pick-up and drop-off locations. If your employer wishes to participate, you could be eligible for pre-tax payroll deductions for the cost of vanpooling.
Share-A-RideCarpoolingA carpool is another great way to relax on your way to and from work. Simply sharing the ride to work in your personal vehicle is a carpool. Anchorage Share-A-Ride offers free, confidential ridematching for commuters. Participants are matched by home and work locations and by working hours, and receive a list of others going their way at their time. Individuals then contact those on their ridematch list to make arrangements.

Bus TrackerPeople Mover launched a new web application, Bus Tracker in May 2009, which provides real-time bus information.
Using automated vehicle location and global positioning technology, Bus Tracker, accessible at: http://BusTracker.muni.org, allows passengers to track where their
bus is along its route and obtain the estimated time the bus will arrive at specific stops. Access to real-time information will decrease wait time in inclement weather.
The information and an interactive map are accessible from a computer. Most BlackBerry, iPhone or similar hand-held Internet based devices can view the information in text format.
Taking the bus has never been easier.
MyNeighborhoodThe Municipality Of Anchorage launched MyNeighborhood in December 2005, a one-stop place for citizens trying to get information online about their community.
Information from many city agencies has been pulled together and is organized by themes which include education, health and family, local services, political, property public safety and recreation. Specific information within each theme will include location
and data about where facilities, services and boundaries are in relation to a specific address. Accessible at http://Neighborhood.muni.org, users can search by a street address or street intersection, either method allows users to choose a theme.
For information on bus routes and bus stops, enter the address and choose “local services”.
