W hile the rest of thecountry is sweltering inextreme heat, North-land is the place to be.
Despite the region experiencingtemperatures in the high 20s and low30Cs, it has had some of the lowesttemperatures and humidity levelsthat are forecast to dip further as theweek progresses.
Although official records kept byMetService and the National Instituteof Water and Atmospheric Research(Niwa) show themercury hovering atabout 27C and 28C, Northlandershave unofficially recordedtemperatures in the mid-30s outsidetheir homes and farms.
Hot air coming across the TasmanSea coupled with warm waters inNew Zealand, a high pressure systembringing settled weather and moresunshine hours are drivingtemperatures to record or near-record levels.
Locations in the central NorthIsland and parts of the South Island
are recording higher temperaturesthan Northland due to geographicaldifferences.
“Northland is a skinnier piece ofthe country that gets affected by thesea breeze so it tends to have lowertemperatures than areas likeWaikatowhich are a lot inland,” explainedMetService meteorologist NicoleRanger.
Kerikeri, which has consistentlybeen the hottest place in Northlandthis summer, briefly ledall the centresin New Zealand at 11am yesterday.
It recorded 31C, followed byKawerau on 30.6C, Whakatane on30C and Whitianga on 28.5C.
Just after 3pm, the hottest spotswere Kawerau on 34.3C; Koromiko, inMarlborough, on 33.1C; and Kawatiri,Nelson, on 32.4C.
In comparison, Whangarei was29C, Kerikeri 31C, Kaitaia 28C, andDargaville 22C.

and I said: ‘If they’renicking it then theyobviously need it’.
Tasha Cowell
I t all started with a bit of elbowpain, slowly escalating to thepoint where Tasha Cowell feltlike she was being burned by
a flame.Cowell was running her cafe on
Whanganui’s Brunswick Rdwith herhusband, Nicolas, and daughter,Hayley Roberts, when she started tofeel aches, pains and tingling.
She put it down to age, but whenshe visited a specialist in Wellingtonshe discovered it was much moreserious than that.
“I was becoming paralysed. It wasreally weird because I didn’t knowit, but my spinal cord was beingcompressed,” Cowell says.
“My specialist told me I neededemergency surgery. I said, ‘The cafecloses in March or April because it’sonly seasonal. How about then?’ andhe said, ‘How about Monday?’ ”
Cowell went under the knife onNovember 5, the procedure wassuccessful, and she is recoveringwell at her home in Aramoho.
However, due to a combination
of her health and other issues, thecafe will remain closed and Cowellhas retired from the catering indus-try.
She made all of the cafe’s foodfrom scratch, using vegetables fromher garden at home, and so shesuddenly found herself needingsomething to do with all her pro-duce.
