TTFM catch up Maths Ext 2 Assessment

20 - 24 July

27 - 31 July

It is great to see the quality of our school recognised at the state level. The NSW Department of Education website has a lovely media article on the school’s volunteering program and the recent Inner West Council award received by the boys for their work on Cyber Seniors. The site also has a podcast that I recorded with the Secretary of Education Mark Scott last week. I was invited to do the podcast in recognition of the high-quality response of our school community to the transition in and out of online learning. This really is recognition of the whole community – the staff, the boys and the parents – as we all made this happen together.

Recognition for the school

Return to normal rooming Since returning to face-to-face teaching, we have continued to work according to a set of home rooms and “mega” classrooms for Year 12. Teachers have been moving between classes instead of the boys. This will cease next Monday and we will return to normal rooming. The NSW Department of Education relaxed many of its COVID-19 restrictions on Monday and even more will end next term. I met with each year group yesterday to discuss this. Even though we are returning to normal movement around the school, the boys will still need to continue with good hygiene practices, hand sanitising, coughing etiquette and remaining home if sick. The boys have been absolutely fantastic at working with us on this. Your son will still need to bring a drink bottle as the bubblers will remain out of action. Normal uniform will apply from Monday as the Gym change rooms will re-open.

YEAR 11 BIOLOGY DEPTH STUDY

Year 11 Biology classes are starting their Depth Study this week. They have started making their environments for their earthworms. They will soon start testing their soil ecosystems and see how different factors can affect different species and their ecosystems. Some boys are a bit squeamish but it’s been fun!

The Year 7 cohort has settled back into the learning routine over the past few weeks, bringing with them their unique personalities and their imaginative art skills. This unit’s focus has been on perspective, seeing the students learning about vanishing points, and the importance of scale and viewpoints when creating their own art works. Students started by creating an interior space with the illusion of depth. They took influence from a room of their own that holds significant sentiment to them, and manipulated it to create their own ideal room sketch. From there, they selected an area of the school, choosing an image of the space’s g block, courtyard, canteen area or quiet area, and applied their previously learned perspective drawing skills to recreate their own unique version of their learning ground. This proved to be a whole lot more challenging than originally expected for some. After the base lines are set, the boys will use additional materials to help spruce their work up – water colour, pen, acrylic paints, objects – creating a piece that showcases a piece of themselves within their new learning environment. I look forward to seeing the end results, showcasing each student’s creative choices and abilities.

YEAR 7 TECHNOLOGY MANDATORY- ENGINEERED SYSTEM

Tower Building Challenge

Year 7 student groups are challenged to design and construct model towers out of cardboard. They are given limited supplies including cardboard, tape and scissors, paralleling the real-world limitations faced by engineers, such as economic restrictions as to how much material can be used in a structure. Students aim to build their towers for height and stability, as well as the strength to withstand a simulated lateral "wind" load.

For the subject of Technology Mandatory, students were required to construct a tower using up to 50 straws, 50 pipe cleaners and 25 paper clips that would support a golf ball within the top 20% of the structure. This was the great effort produced by Bruno, Adam and Oliver of class 7TM8. The tower had an overall height of 955 millimetres. Mr L Alevizos HT - TAS

TELL THEM FROM ME

This week, most of our students participated in the annual Tell Them From Me survey. It was impressive to see them take this very seriously.

As explained to the boys, the data from this confidential survey will enable us our school to make informed decisions in planning and future directions.

We also use this data as a check that ABHS is catering for the wellbeing needs of our students and providing an environment for all our boys to achieve their personal best. We look forward to sharing these results in the near future.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award at Ashfield Boys High School

Exciting news! This coming year Ashfield Boys High School will reactivate our role as an Independent Award Centre for the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award by offering the Bronze Level of the Award. If your son is over 14 years old at the beginning of Term 3, 2020, he is eligible to participate in this highly regarded and prestigious Award. We are running the Award through our school as we want our students to have this great opportunity to develop their self-esteem, confidence, goal setting skills, engagement with community, teamwork, leadership and resilience. It also helps them build their portfolios which are becoming increasingly important for scholarships, further education and securing jobs. Each year, Ashfield Boys High School will offer a further level of the Award allowing students to progress through all three levels while they are at school. The Silver and Gold Awards offer advantages for the ATAR at some universities and many large companies have partnered with the Award and give preference for jobs to Award recipients. Find out how Ashfield Boys High School can mentor your son in his journey towards achieving his Duke of Edinburgh International Awards.

Information Event for parents and potential participants:

Due to restrictions the boys have not been able to train and play volleyball, so the dire need to hit the court and send spikes is high. The boys are very keen to get back into training and work toward upcoming tournaments and match play. The boys are in preparation mode for School’s Cup in term 3 and have plenty of gala days to look forward to in the second half of the year! What’s really great to see is the senior students taking initiative and mentoring some of the younger players, inviting the juniors along to their training sessions. The next generation of Ashfield Volleyball players is looking promising! Bring on Grade Volleyball.
