A. Kramer FDK Ms. Knights to Vice Principal at Bolton C. Falby

I am honoured and excited to be joining the Pringle Creek Community in January. I am looking forward embracing what it means to be a Panther and getting to know the students, staff and families that make Pringle a special place. I believe that every student can succeed and that we accomplish that by working together.

Cold & Flu Season is here! Thank you to parents who have been keeping their children at home when they have cold and flu symptoms. At Pringle Creek we continue to encourage: - proper use of hand sanitizers and frequent hand washing - cough or sneeze into the crook of your elbow rather than in your hands - keep your surroundings clean and not sharing food, personal belongings etc.

B-B-B-B-BABY, IT’S COLD OUTSIDE!! Well, not really cold yet! But chilly enough for us to be mindful of the recesses and 1 hour lunch recess that add up to the need for extra layers. Thanks for sending the warm jackets, sweaters and mitts. It won’t be long before we’ll be needing boots—yikes!!

Inclement Weather During inclement weather, the Durham District School Board attempts to keep schools open but this does not mean that students must be sent to school. It is the parents’ responsibility to decide if conditions are safe for their children to walk to and from school. Be sure to call the “safe arrival” line if your child will not be attending. When busses are cancelled in the morning, they will not run in the afternoon. In the event that inclement weather forces the cancellation of school bus service for children, the following radio stations will be notified before 7:00 a.m.

CKDO-AM 1350 CKDO-FM 107.7 THE ROCK FM 94.9 KX96-FM 95.9 CHUM-FM 104.5 Y92-FM 91.9 CBC-FM 99.1 Q107-FM 107.1 CKLY-AM 91.0 CIAX 105.9 CFRB-AM 1010

WINTER REMINDERS

Much consideration and input from people located across the Durham District School Board’s (DDSB) jurisdiction is given to de-cisions regarding school bus transporta-tion on wintery mornings.

In the early pre-dawn hours of winter mornings, Durham Student Transportation Services (DSTS) begins receiving infor-mation from roads crews in Uxbridge, Brock and Scugog; weather watchers in various parts of Durham; and school bus companies. Weather and road conditions are monitored, with ongoing updates pro-vided to DSTS. As well, weathers stations and other media are consulted for current weather conditions and forecasts.

Before 6 a.m., all information is reviewed, and DSTS makes a recommendation to the two school boards it provides trans-portation to, the DDSB and Durham’s Catholic board. One of three possible out-

comes is decided: bus service will operate; bus service is cancelled; or, bus service is cancelled north of Highway 7, including any of Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge townships.

The third potential outcome is a result of the change in terrain and weather seen north of the Oak Ridges Moraine, where weather conditions are often more severe than in the south end of Durham. In the north, schools bus routes are generally longer, run along roads with higher speed limits and require more numerous routes.

Transportation cancellations or delays are found on the DSTS website at www.dsts.on.ca and on the DDSB Twitter feed, @DurhamDSB. Cancellation information is also often broadcast on local TV and radio stations.

Remember to dress warmly if waiting for a bus. Cold weather sometimes means delays. Be sure to check www.dsts.on.ca for information, and have a contingency plan in place.

Kendra McAlpine, a Grade Four student at our school has been selected as Whitby's 2016 Junior fire Chief of the Year! Kendra submitted a fire safety plan in the yearly contest for Grade 4 students in Whitby. Her poster, as well as three others were selected as finalists. Kendra then met with Fire-fighting Staff and after an interview was chosen to represent our Town! Kendra was present in her official capacity at the Open House at the Fire Hall during Whitby's Fire Prevention Week. On November 21, Kendra was honoured in front of her parents, younger sister Kelsey and her classmates, by Firefighter Terry Von Zueben as well as by 5 other firefighters in her classroom. An enlarged copy of Kendra's poster was shown and Firefighter Von Zueben described the various duties Kendra would have over the year. Kendra was then whisked off with her firefighting team and family to the awaiting fire truck where she got to sit in the Captain's seat and drive away to the fire station. After lunching at McDonalds with her team, Kendra returned to school. She then went to a 6:30 p.m. Town Council Meeting where she was honoured by the Deputy Mayor and Town Council. Congratulations Kendra! We look forward to hearing more of your continu-ing duties as Junior Fire Chief as the year goes on!

Las Posadas

Posadas are an important part of Mexican Christmas traditions. These community celebrations take place on each of the nine nights leading up to Christmas, from December 16 to 24th. The word posada means "inn" or "shelter" in Spanish, and in this tradition, Mary and Joseph's jour-ney to Bethlehem and their search for a place to stay is re-enacted.
