What is the Internet?• The Internet is a system of

interconnected computer networks that use standard communications protocols.


Before the Internet• The Internet was launched to the public in 1991.• Prior to 1991, people had to physically go the

library to perform research. o College students spent hours and hours in the

library to find information that we now can find by clicking a few times on the Internet.

• Can you imagine actually going to the library?


How to get the Internet

o A Place/Spot that offers Internet wirelessly

o Examples• Fast food places• Bookstores• Coffee shops• Some restaurants

• Internet Service Provider

• A company who provides access to the Interneto Examples

o Software applications used to locate and display the Internet• There are many examples of Internet

browserso Each web browser performs the same

duties, but different people have a preference regarding which browser to use.

All about the Internet• Double click on your web browser to access the

Internet.• Your homepage will automatically appear

o The page that automatically comes up when you start your web browser is your homepage.

• Once you open the Internet, type your URL address in the address bar.o URL—Uniformed Resource Locator

How to Use a Search Engine

• When using a search engine, type in keywords.oKeywords are short important words

used in search engines.o They narrow down the search.

• The results of a search are called hits.


Internet Search StrategiesSearch Engines

• Program that searches the Internet (other websites) for information according to keywords that the user types in.

• Provides the user with a list of website links of webpages that contain information about the keywords typed into the search criteria.

• Advanced Searcho Using an advanced search on a web browser

allows you to filter or narrow down specific choices.

• Notice the options available• Exact wording• Unwanted words



• Advanced Searcho Words such as: OR, AND, NOT are called

the search parameters is called a BOOLEAN search

• Open a web browser.• Type your favorite search engine in the address

bar.o The search engine should pop up.

• Notice that we did not type in a question…just the keywords.

Cutting Edge Technology2003-2013

• 2003:TissueReplacement–re-growing damaged bone joints in the body using injectable tissue engineering rather than using surgery and a metal replacement joint.

• 2006:Trojan Particles–Injectable clear fluid containing tiny particles that travel through the body to locate cancer cells. They trick the cancer cells into “eating” the particles as food, and then kill them.
