KOKODA CHALLENGE TRIUMPH!Hi all!

Every once in a while you get the opportunity to take partin something extraordinary. As I’m sure everyone who wasinvolved would agree, the weekend of 18 and 19 July wasone of those. It has been an absolute privilege to journey withquality people over the last 6 months, both staff and students. At Tullawong, the depth of our students is incredible. We allought to be proud to be associated with them.

Blistered and bruised feet seemed to be the theme of the day/night/almost sunrise. All our students showed extreme couragein the face of adversity. Students continued to walk despitethe flowing tears, frustration and exhaustion well into the earlyhours of the morning. Many of them considered giving it up anumber of times but pushed through to the end. At one point,it took us 2.5 hours to cover just 5km of relatively ‘easy’ terrain(compared to what we had done).

• Outstanding accounts will result in your student’snon-participation in extracurricular activities such ascamps, Year 12 Formal, excursions and sportingevents. Your student may also be excluded from theStudent Resource Scheme in 2016.

Our first team to cross the line was our all-female team ledby Erin White. Well done team!! They were strong all day/nightand finished at 2:01am Sunday morning (after starting at 11amSaturday) in a journey of just over 15 hours. The girls were superinspiring to us all as they responded well to Erin’s outstandingleadership. The remaining two teams led by Ryan Verhagen andmyself, had a slower journey and ended up joining forces for thefinal 9km to help get us across the line. We ended up finishingat 5:20am, a journey of 18 hours and 20 minutes. Two of ourgirls were forced to withdraw from the event with 9km and4km remaining due to blisters and other things that skin shouldnot be allowed to do. They both showed amazing courage towalk the distance they did and will still receive their certificate ofsuccess as they were exemplary in demonstrating the values ofthe event.

A HUGE thanks goes to the support crews on the night, namely Sam Gordon, Sally Newick (who worked throughthe night despite a shoulder injury), Jason Wood, TeresaSoden, Mark White and Ailsa King. No-one would havecrossed the line without them. They sacrificed hours of sleep, setting up and packing up their vehicles and serving us hotfood and treating medical (and emotional!!) issues up to 3times during the night in the cold winds. They communicatedbrilliantly, encouraging us all the way.

Also, a very special thanks goes to Erin and Ryan for theircommitment to the teams over the past 6-8 months. Many, many hours have gone into training, preparing, liaising, mediating, motivating and reassuring. This has cost theirpersonal time, energy and money over an extended period; amassive commitment. Well done.

Thanks also to Sam Gordon and Jason Wood who voluntarilysupported us at almost all of our training sessions at MtCoot-Tha every second Friday night after school, as well asthe Gold Coast training days on Saturdays. You put in almost150km of training and helped motivate students and staff alike. You have been invaluable to all of us.

Lastly, thanks to Dave Ferguson who has made this allpossible. He wouldn’t want me to say it, but he has gone aboveand beyond to make sure the event was a success, going outof his way to provide excellent leadership while ensuring thewelfare of staff and students was maintained over the past 6months. Even when it seemed things would fall through timeand time again, he always provided a solution. Thanks for beingon board.

Thanks Tullawong for your interest in the event. Make sureif you see the students around the place you give them ahigh-five for their efforts (although I’ve been reliably informedthat this is highly embarrassing for them and they would preferfist-pumps).

Cheers,

Tim KingHPE/Biology/Science Teacher

USING MATHS IN THE HEALTH SECTORLast term our Year 11 Prevocational Maths Classes completeda unit on how Maths was used within the Health sector. As apart of this, one of our classes was lucky enough to have a visitfrom James Johnson, a Personal Trainer in the Caboolture areaand Simon Verdouw of the Beacon Foundation. James talkedto the students about how he uses Maths to run his businessand to devise exercise programs for his clients. James alsotalked to the students about how he went about establishinghis own personal training business, including how he sourceshis equipment, locations and the licencing requirements - veryuseful for the students completing their Certificate Three inFitness. Then he was able to help our students create their ownexercise programs that were included in their assessment.

Thanks James and Simon for taking time out of your day to helpbetter inform our students of a real world application of Maths.

WHY STUDENTS NEED TO TURN OFF DEVICESAN HOUR BEFORE SLEEP

Artificial light from electronic and other devices generally emit ablue light (it may not actually look blue, but that is the underlyinglight). Blue light, along with ultraviolet light is a type ofnon-visible light at a very short wavelength.

What does blue light do to the human body?

Non-visible light has a lot of energy and studies show that alot of exposure to this type of light can do damage to youreyes and impair your sleep cycle. During sleep, lots of essentialphysical processes take place and it is when learning fromthe day is consolidated in memory; so getting enough sleep isessential for students.

Blue light is naturally generated only during the day, fromsunlight. When it gets dark, naturally occurring blue lightceases, signalling the body to produce melatonin, the hormoneassociated with sleep. Using artificial lighting and devices thatemit a blue light at night, confuses the body-clock (the body’snatural sleep-wake cycle) by stopping the body from producingmelatonin. This can result in disrupted sleep patterns including

difficulty in falling asleep and staying asleep and shortenedsleep duration.

Those at greatest risk from night-time exposure to blue lightare those with existing sleep disorders and adolescents whooften experience delayed sleep patterns because of biologicalchanges.

What can I do to limit my exposure to blue light atnight?

Some suggestions include:

SPORTS DAY REVIEWTullawong State High School’s Sports Day was a success, with perfect weather conditions, broken records and creativeSport Hero costumes. The day was filled with laughter and joy,as teachers and students took part in many events achievingpoints for their house colour. Amazing performances bystudents throughout the day’s events, as well as a jump innumbers with participation compared to previous years. Theday could not have been possible without the help of the SportsDevelopment teachers, staff, grounds men and canteen ladies. We appreciate the work and effort put in to 2015’s SportsCarnival. Congratulations to all age champions, as well as thestudents who qualified for districts.

• Be exposed to sunlight during the day to assist inaccurately setting your body clock.

• Stop using all electronic devices preferably at least 2hours before bed.

• Turn off all artificial lighting 1-2 hours before bed.

• Get a red or orange reading lamp, which does notemit blue light.

• Use blue light blocking glasses at night.

• Install a program or app on your computer or deviceto change the type of light it emits. A variety ofprograms are available including F.lux, EasyEyez,Night Filter, Zzz iPhone filter, Bluelight and Twilight

• Invert the colours on your iPhone or iPad.

• Turn the brightness down on your device for a fewhours before bed (not perfect, but better thannothing!).

KITCHEN GARDEN MANAGED BY PHOENIXBOYS

Bunnings assisted us to get our garden by donating gift cards,so we could buy plants for the garden. Bunnings also helped uswith getting the shovels and tools needed to prepare the soil.We chose the plants based on the greatest need in the schoolby getting vegetables and herbs to help Home Economics. MrMaguire aided us on the day to plant our seedlings and preparethe soil.

We are still growing some seedlings that have not been plantedyet. Mr Stephenson assisted us to make some water cans fromrecycled milk bottles. Mr Stephenson also helped us with usingthe wood burner to write on our garden stakes that we sandedand painted at Bunnings.

The tomatoes are already flowering and we are hoping to getsome tomatoes soon. Our potatoes weren’t very lucky anddidn’t last in the cold, but our other plants are thriving.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCILNEWS

2015 so far has been a big year for the Student RepresentativeCouncil. School and charity events and fundraisers have filledthe school calendar and with the help of many students, teachers and family members, the SRC is indeed, ‘soaring to

8

Page 9: PRINCIPAL’S REPORT - Tullawong State High School · PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Dear Parents and Staff, ... Invoice Number and Amount to pay. It is ... CHAMPION SCHOOL FRUIT WINE MAKER

great heights’. This year alone the school has been involved inmany fundraising events including: the World’s Greatest Shave, the Women’s Day International Fun Run and the Kokoda YouthFoundations Jim Stillman Cup. Additionally, the school raisedfunds for Fiji to help with the recovery after the tsunami early thisyear by hosting a free dress day.

Over the last 2 years, the World’s Greatest Shave has becomea large school event with $11,000 raised in 2014 and 2015alone. This year’s brave students, Ahmed Soliman, MarcusMillar, Kenesi Fredsberg, Ella Crettenden, Glenn Arbon, ZacLamb, Jalon Bossi, Jesse Barrow, Travis Purdie and KeeganBarnett, raised $4000 for the cause, with the assistance andsupport of Mr Ryan Verhagen who organised the event.

The Women’s Day International Fun Run was also an event heldearlier in the year to support breast cancer research. $1100was raised by the Tullawong team with $600 of the total raisedby one of our sports captains, Sam VanDerStoep. Two of theparticipating students, Jade Garland and Stacey Smith ran the5km fun run while Glenn Arbon, Jasmine Lee, Jocell Mambear,Jordan Quonoey, Abbey Schutt, Chelsea Ham, Sean Pobjie,Kenesi Raisley, Lauren Arbon, Brittany Jordan, Kianah Witt,Catya Dziduch, Natasha Bates, Caalita, Miss Subramanium,Miss Li, Mrs Peereboom, Mrs Trims and Mrs Keal, walked the5km.

A recently introduced event to the school this year was theKokoda Youth Foundations Jim Stillman Cup. Three teamsof four senior students along one teacher hiked the gruelling48km trek in the Gold Coast Hinterlands, to raise money forthe Kokoda youth foundation on 18 July. The students, HayleyEngland, Sandy Duncan, Amalya Valle, Stacey Smith, GlennArbon, Tristan Smith, Ashleigh Young, Bianca Hewitt-Ruhle,Sam Vanderstoep, Jake Dziduch, Jordan Quonoey and AbbeySchutt, along with their teachers, Mrs Erin White, Mr Tim Kingand Mr Ryan Verhagan, and support crew, Mrs Ailsa King,Mr Samuel Gordon, Mr Mark White, Mrs Teresa Soden, MrJason Wood and Mrs Sally Newick , trained vigorously for 5months before the event at Mt Coo-tha as well as in the GoldCoast Hinterlands. All who were involved invested a great dealof time, money and effort into the opportunity and raised atotal of $3400 for the cause. The Kokoda Challenge was notonly a great personal achievement, but a way to honour theKokoda legacy and support local teenagers to gain a brighterfuture for themselves and their families through the KokodaChallenge Youth Program. The event proved to be a physicallyand mentally rewarding opportunity, where students andteachers grew as people and learned about themselves andeach other. The teams who participated in the event would liketo personally thank Mrs Murphy, Mr Ferguson and all thoseinvolved who gave the students and teachers such an amazingopportunity that will be a highlight of 2015.

Another huge success within the SRC this year was theValentine’s Day Fundraiser. The SRC sold 475 roses tostudents and teachers and a total of $712.50 was raised. Inaddition to these amazing events, the Tullawong LeadershipTeam has also been playing a large role in various areas of theschool; helping out with breakfast club every Tuesday morning, where each leadership group takes turns to cook and serve afree and nutritional breakfast to students before the beginningof the school day. Students also cooked a barbeque breakfast

for Year 7 and 9 students participating in the NAPLAN testsand played a fundamental role in Clean Up Australia Day andANZAC Day.

Three of our SRC members were also given the opportunityto compete in the NSW math Competition with help from theQueensland University of Technology.
