DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S NOTES
LATE ARRIVALS Anyone late to LMG MUST
report to Student Reception for a late stamp before attendingclass.
MESSAGES TO STUDENTS These should be limited to those that are ofan emergency nature.
STUDENT ABSENCES As parents and carers are aware, the Collegehas a policy regarding student absenceswhere the parent/carer is to telephone theCollege between 7:45am and 9:30am on theday of the absence. The second part of this policy is thata written note is also required on the firstday of the student’s return. Please note that this written explanationnote is a legal requirement of the student’s attendance record at school. Unfortunately a telephone call does notconstitute a written record of the absence so we do still require a parental note followingeach absence. Mr Peter Lyon Deputy Principal
STUDENT SICKNESS Any student feeling ill during the school day MUST report to Student Reception with anote in their planner signed by their class teacher. Students are not to contact their parents to go home sick - this is something that is arranged by the office staff. We ask for the support of parents and carers in reminding their child/ren of these College procedures.
PARENT USE OF STUDENT PLANNER Should you wish for your son or daughter be excused for any of the following reasons:
to leave school early;
be given permission not to do PE lessons;
to leave the school grounds and then return;
be excused from performing a set piece of work;
be excused for coming to school late; or
be excused from sport; We ask that our PARENTS/CARERS please write a note on the left hand side of their child’s Student Planner.
Issue 26 2011 | Term 3 Week 8 Page 3
Students Absences: Please telephone the College between 7:45am and 9:30am on the day of the absence. A note is also required on the first day of the student’s return.
Luke 5:33-38
Jesus said to the people, “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit; for each tree is known by its own fruit. Figs are not gathered from thorns, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. The good person out of the good treasure of the heart produces good, and the evil person out of evil treasure produces evil; for it is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks. Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I tell you? I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them. That one is like a man building a house, who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock; when a flood arose, the river burst against that house but could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not act is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the river burst against it, immediately it fell, and great was the ruin of that house.”
There are some practical and homely sayings from Jesus in today’s gospel reading. He stresses that what is on the inside of a person is the source of actions for good or bad.
Prayer – even sitting silently before God – is one way of bringing light and sincerity to the motivations of our lives. Nobody can be aware of God’s presence, silently or with words, and not change for the better!

YOUNG ENDEAVOUR YOUTH SCHEME
SETTING SAIL IN 2012
Australia's national sail training ship Young Endeavour is now accepting applications for youth to join eleven day voyages departing between January and June 2012. Young Australians aged 16 to 23 can apply for the ballot at www.young endeavour.gov.au until 30 September 2011. No sailing experience is required.
A voyage in Young Endeavour is an amazing experience and a unique opportunity for youth to develop teamwork and leadership skills through a world recognised organisation. The current ballot includes voyages along the eastern coast of Australia, which will be crewed by youth from around the country.
During each voyage youth crew learn the skills to successfully sail a square rigged ship. They climb the 30 metre mast, set and furl sails, and maintain a 24 hour watch on the bridge. They also learn to navigate, take the helm, keep lookout and help the chef in the ship’s galley. Once they have learned these skills, each youth crew will take command of Young Endeavour for 24hours, and on their last day at sea will host a local group of youth with special needs, sharing their new found knowledge and experiences.
18 year old Hannah Richards of Blackburn, Victoria completed a voyage from Hobart to Sydney in February, and says it was one of the best things she has ever done. “Young Endeavour pushes you outside your comfort zone. It challenges your expectations and teaches you about your own strengths," says Hannah. "I met new friends from all around Australia and now constantly recommend a voyage in Young Endeavour."
17 year old Errol Zanos travelled all the way from Wagait Beach in the Northern Territory to join the youth crew and sail Young Endeavour into Sydney in July. He applied after hearing about a mate’s amazing adventure, and says, "I will always remember climbing aloft at night and furling the sails. As well as learning how to sail a tall ship, my time aboard Young Endeavour has improved my teamwork skills and my self esteem."
Since 1988 the Young Endeavour Youth Scheme, in partnership with the Royal Australian Navy, has provided challenging training voyages for over 11,000 young Australians in the tall ship Young Endeavour. The specially designed program delivered aboard the ship increases the youth crew’s self awareness, develops teamwork and leadership skills, and fosters a strong sense of community spirit.

SOUTHERN CROSS UNIVERSITY
SCU HEAD-START PROGRAM FOR CURRENT YEAR 10 AND 11 STUDENTS
SCU Head-Start is an opportunity for Year 11 and 12 students to gain direct entry and advanced standing into a variety of courses offered at Southern Cross University.
Free from university fees, the program offers you the chance to gain a taste of university life, stimulate your interest in academic pursuits and enhance your educational performance and long term aspirations. The program has been designed for students who have the academic capability to succeed at university. Applicants will be selected on merit, based on their academic performance, a personal statement and the recommendation off their Principal.
Through SCU Head-Start you will have the choice to study one of two units; both units have been selected as they can be used as core units or elective units within a large number of courses offered by Southern Cross University. The options available for study in 2012 are Communication in Organisations and Human Physiology
The Communication in Organisations unit will be offered in Session 1 with orientation sessions for successful applicants commencing on 8 February. This unit has been approved as a University Developed Board Endorse Course (UDBEC). This means students will be able to study this unit as part of their HSC however; it will not contribute to a student’s ATAR.
The Human Physiology unit will be offered in Session 2, with orientation sessions for successful applicants commencing on 6 June. This unit did not receive Board of Studies endorsement due to the perceived overlap with the existing HSC courses of Biology and Chemistry. As a result, this unit will not contribute to a student’s HSC mark but we encourage students with an interest in pursuing further study in the science disciplines to take up this wonderful opportunity.
More information regarding this program can be found at www.scu.edu.au/headstart/.

ADOLESCENT DRINKING BEHAVIOUR
Young people aged 16-24 are amongst the heaviest drinkers in Australian society. In NSW, 50% of males and 37% of females in this age group drink more than 2 standard drinks per day which is the low risk level recommended in the Australian Alcohol Guidelines. (NSW Population Health Survey 2009) Paul Dillon from Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia (who is the keynote speaker at the north coast RRISK Seminars) said that many young people drink “to get out of it, to get wasted” and that “Australia is one of the few countries where binge drinking is acceptable”. Young people are less likely than adults to be concerned about the negative consequences of heavy drinking. They are more at risk than adults as they are physically andpsychologically immature, lack experience
risk e of th Choos nk respon lt task nd carers are often so concerned about the risks associated with illicit drug use that they forget that alcohol is the substance most likely to be the potential source of harm. Under age drinking is becoming an ever increasing concern. The earlier young people start drinking, the more likely they are to become high risk drinkers and experience alcohol related harm whilst they are young and in later life. Who supplies alcohol to young people? Parents are the most common suppliers of alcohol with 28% of males and 29.5% of females under the legal drinking age of 18 reporting that they obtained alcohol from their parents; 21.6% of males and 23.4% of females reporting that they obtained it from friends and 21% of males and 25% of females asked someone to buy it for them. (NSW School Students Health Behaviours, 2008) Parents and carers need to consider the

THE GLOBAL EXPERIENCE – LIVE IT AT HOME
In January 2012, students from over 20 countries around the world will be arriving in Australia to study at local high schools for 5 or 10 months.
Opportunities exist for families to act as a host family, in a voluntary capacity. Hosting can be on
a temporary, short or long term basis. Host families help provide international students with
the chance to study and experience life in Australia. This is a great way to learn about
another country and culture, establish a lifelong link to a family in another country and contribute to
international goodwill.
