Year 8 Advisors Report - Griffith siteOur Yr 8 students have been working hard since returning to school this term. I regularly speak about the importance of resilience, one of our core PBL values and I’m really proud of the way Yr 8 have dealt with over-coming challenges in returning to school. Yr 8 are certainly demonstrating their ability to persevere through tough times!

In English at the Griffith site, Yr 8 have been completing a unit of work on biographies and autobiographies in which many of the students have learnt about Zach Doomadgee through the award winning Australian documentary Zach’s Ceremony. They watched as Zach went from a young indigenous boy dreaming of ‘be-ing a man’ as he struggled to understand his place in the world before finally securing a sense of identity and belonging. This process is something our students can connect with as they are developing their own sense of purpose and finding their own strengths in a particularly unsettled time. Yr 8 parents and carers can support students through encouraging them to maintain regular attendance at school, communicate their feelings and to be the best version of themselves each day. If students need extra support, appointments with the school counsellors can be arranged.

On Thursday, August 13, Yr 8 had a combined Report Ceremony with Yr 7 at the Griffith site. We are thankful to Roger Penrith from the Clontarf Academy who gave the Acknowledgement of Country and we were ex-tremely privileged to have the very talented trio of Glory Nauer, Timote Liu and Liliana Ah Kee sing a beauti-ful acapella version of the National Anthem.

In Maths, Yr 8 students across both sites have been learning about equations and plotting them onto the num-ber plane. In HSIE, Yr 8 have started Geography after completing History last term. They are now studying Place and Liveability. In Science, students have been starting to plan their Student Research Projects. In this assessment, students develop their own investigation question and follow the scientific method, completing an experiment at home. They have also been completing the ‘ Forces and Energy’ unit in which students explore a variety of forces and energy transformations. At the Griffith site, Yr 8 have had lots of fun participating in a variety of pracs.

Mathematics Report Year 12 Congratulations to Yr 12 who, at the time of writing are sitting their Trial Examinations. We are very proud of the work they have put into their learning this term. With all the challenges that they were presented with, they always gave of their best, attempted the work set, attended Zoom meet-ings and did it all with a smile and positive attitude. We are pleased to say that, Yr 12 have almost completed all the Mathe-matics courses, which means that they have plenty of time to study and perfect their skills before the end of the term.

Year 11This semester, students in Math-ematics Standard have studied Earning and Managing Money, Equations, Measurement, Prob-ability, Data, Budgeting and Household Expenses, Interest and Depreciation and Linear Relationships. The Mathemat-ics Advanced class has studied Algebraic Techniques, Equations and Inequalities, Functions, Trig-onometry, Differential Calculus and Exponential and Logarith-mic Functions. The Mathematics Extension 1 class has studied Working with Combinatorics, Polynomials, Inequalities, Rates of Change and Inverse Functions. During this semester, all class-es have completed a take-home assignment. The Mathematics

Standard course completed a sta-tistical study centred on collect-ing and displaying data which in-cluded using a Pareto chart. The Mathematics Advanced course created a Learning Journal to out-line their knowledge and under-standing of Differential Calculus and the Mathematics Extension 1 course has been sketching graphs. This term students will be finalising their Yr 11 courses and preparing for their Preliminary Examinations in Weeks 9 and 10.

Junior Maths We are delighted with the achievements of those students who faced the challenges of Se-mester 1 with resilience and de-termination. We are also gratified in how well they have all settled back into the routine of working in the classroom. Their learning of Mathematics is essential as it is based on the premise of build-ing on previous skills. The study of Algebra in particular requires much practice to perfect so that students can move into applica-tions. Students have studied Data, the ability to truthfully display and analyse information. We have even been able to relate some of these concepts to the Sigmoid curve that the COVID-19 pan-demic represents. Measurement is one of the most practical topics and students seem to relate to the questions more readily.

Term 3 sees the return of formal assessment tasks in the junior school at the Griffith site with most classes sitting a topic test and/or being given a take-home assignment to be completed be-fore the holidays. Students across both sites have also enjoyed the challenges of Mathletics activi-ties and are welcome to continue reinforcing their knowledge and skills through using this wonder-ful program at home. This is also an excellent way to enhance their preparation for the Yearly Exam-inations, which will be held mid Term 4.

We would like to remind every-one that calculators are available for purchase at a very comparable rate from the Administration Offices at both sites. A student having their own calculator, books and stationery means no borrowing needs to occur and is beneficial for everyone.

On behalf of the MRHS Mathe-matics Faculty, we wish everyone a happy and healthy remainder of Term 3.

Year 8 Advisors Report - Wade siteYear 8 has continued to show their strength and resilience during this crazy covid year that we are all experiencing. Former year advisor, Miss Sara Wylie departed MRHS to embark on adventures at an In-ternational School for the remainder of the year. We wish her the very best of luck.

I, Miss Brooke Gilmour, have accepted the position of Year 8 advisor. I have been teaching for many years in our local area and am qualified to teach across several subject areas. I am currently teaching mathematics at Wade site and am very excited to be taking on this new challenge of Year Advisor.

In Maths, Yr 8 students have been learning about equations, plotting them onto the number plane and have found an understanding of the use of equations across many different employment sectors.

Geography students are working on a matrix for Place and Liveability.

In Science, students are studying elements com-pounds and chemical reactions. In particular the Coriolis effect, or in other words why the sinks and drains swirl in different directions in the northern and southern hemisphere.

PE /sport have seen the students challenge it out at tenpin bowling and will soon be taking aim at laser tag. PD classes are currently studying Drugs and Al-cohol and are completing a project to design a board game.Metal students have designed and constructing Cof-fee cup trees, while Timber students have construct-ed lolly dispensers, BBQ tidies, and pot plant wheel barrows. Over in Textiles, the students have been practicing their sewing skills and have produced some very handy USB holders.

In English all students are currently studying fea-tures of drama texts and production and design aspects.

As you can see, Term 3 has been a very busy and an interesting term across all subjects.

If you have concerns, questions or queries, please do not hesitate to contact me through the school or pop in for a meeting.
