Welcome back to students, parents and families for the 2020 school year. We have a number of new staff joining us this year at Collarenebri Central School. We welcome new teachers Jessica Sluyter in K-6 and Erich Riesinger in High School, Bernadette Flick and Katy Jasper as SLSO’s in the K-6 and Zita Fogarty back from leave in the front office. We welcome an excited group of Kindergarten students, I can only dream of having this much energy. They were very excited to receive an award during the weekly assembly. Congratulations to them all. It is fantastic to see greater numbers in high school particularly year 11 and 12. This year we have committed SLSO’s to the high school to ensure students in all stage groups are supported in their educational, social and wellbeing pursuits during the 2020 school year. K-6 classes also have an SLSO in all classes to support our students. It was a pleasure and very moving experience to welcome artist and Biennale of Sydney Artistic Director Brooke Andrew and his team to Collarenebri. Thanks to Ros McGregor for her efforts in ensuring our students and community were involved in this activity. We look forward to the next part of this journey for our community and school. House spirit was on display at the annual school swimming carnival, the recent much needed rain held off just long enough for the carnival to be completed. I was able to catch some of the races, aside from the great swimming, witnessing Janarli Walford and Terri-Lee Murray dive in to help students feel safe and encourage them to finish races was a particular highlight for me. The next local AECG meeting will be held at the school next Monday 24 th February at 3.30pm, I look forward to working closely with the AECG this year. Again welcome to another busy school year. Yaama Colly from Secondary It has been a solid start for 2020 in Secondary. Most of our students have settled well, in class and engaged in learning. Well done students

This year, we said goodbye to Mr Mukherjee. He has accepted a permanent position in another North West school teaching Advanced Mathematics, Chemistry and Senior Science. We wish him all the best. His new students are very fortunate to have him. We have also waved goodbye to Ms Mary-Anne Attard. After 3 years in Colly, she left with good memories and skills that will help her new Mandatory Technology students from the inner west region of Sydney. Her new Grandson was a big motivation for her move. We have welcomed Mr Riesinger as our new Mandatory Technology and Stage 4 Maths teacher. He has mentioned fond memories of his previous time here and is impressed with the focus and determination of our students. We also welcome Mr Craig Duncan who teaches Gamilaraay Language, Art and Culture and Maths for Years 9 to 12. Mr Duncan was in Primary last year and it has been wonderful to have him with us. Congratulations to Terri-Lee, Jase, Dale, Tobie and Aaron for their fantastic start. 2020 will only be 3

terms until they finish, but it will be a very busy time for them. Attending everyday, and keeping up to date with all their work is important. The collaboration

between Parents and School is imperative for their success. We will send an invitation home for all Parents of Year 11 and 12 students this week. This meeting will be to discuss the progress of students, PLPs, communicate assessment schedules, excursions, and general

expectations. Thank you in advance Parents for your time supporting our students. Up and coming events Collarenebri Local AECG meeting will be on the 24th February 3:30pm, Collarenebri Central School Community Hall. Please join us. Year 7 will start their Year 7 Best Start sessions this week. Mr Yates has sent a letter home informing parents of this Department of Education initiative. Please contact him for more details. On Thursday, Mrs Shearer will have a whole day session of Primary Industries. Students are excited about these days as it enables them to develop skills and complete work in one session. Thank you to Mrs Shearer for her attention to this classroom strategy. 3rd March at 12:30pm in the HSIE room, community are welcomed to join us with a Beacon Live Video Conference on Apprenticeships. Please contact Mrs Shearer for more details. These information webinars are informative and well worth attending. Vocational Education and Training (VET) and Careers News – Rachael Shearer This year there is a number of students completing nationally recognised Certificates as part of their HSC Studies. Qualifications include: Certificate III Level:

- Health Services Assistance

- Early Childhood Education and Care

Certificate II Level: - Automotive

- Business Services

- Hospitality

- Primary Industries

- Skills in Vocational Education and Training

School Based Traineeships: - Two students have commenced their traineeships which will see them complete one day per week on the

job training. Thank you again to Biddle’s Auto and Collarenebri Preschool for this excellent opportunity.

With all Vocational Education qualifications students must complete mandatory ‘On the job’ training throughout the two years of their senior study. I will be contact with families in the coming weeks to discuss expectations and proposed dates. Workplace learning provides opportunities for students to: explore first-hand the world of work, gain job-ready skills and knowledge, practice general and industry-specific skills, identify career options and pathways and be inspired about new work opportunities. Unique Student Identifier (USI) All students undertaking a VET qualification must obtain a USI number. The USI initiative commenced on 1 January 2015 and is a reference number made up of ten numbers and letters that is free and easy to create and stays with you for life.

If you are a new or continuing student undertaking nationally recognised training, you will need a USI in order to receive your qualification or statement of attainment. This includes nationally recognised training delivered by secondary schools.

The USI will give you access to an online record of your nationally recognised training in the form of a USI Transcript. This can be used when applying for a job, seeking a credit transfer or demonstrating pre-requisites when undertaking further training.

I will be in contact with families to create a USI for students in years 9 and 10. To create a USI for a student any of the following are needed; a valid Medicare Card, Photo ID or Birth Certificate.

Moree University Showcase/Workshop – Tuesday 18th February Years 9 and 10 will travel to Moree Secondary College to learn about tertiary education and pathways. The workshop includes: raising aspirations/how to apply, costs and support, accommodation options and life as a university student. The first newsletter of the Term and already there are many events happening. Firstly, I would like to welcome Miss Jessica Sluyter her from the coast. Jessica is our year 1/2/3 teacher in the infant’s block. We also have two new SLSO’s in the Infants/ Primary section, welcome Mrs. Katy Jasper and Ms Bernadette Flick. To Parents, I am currently organising the Primary Excursion this year which will be to Canberra and the Snow fields in Term 3. Information packages will be sent out soon so students are prepared for our trip. The new Minister Mr George Ferguson will be teaching scripture lesson within Infants/ Primary classes within the next few weeks. All students are very happy about scripture happening again within our school and we can’t wait to sing some new songs with Mr Ferguson. Mr Brook Andrews is an Associate Professor at MADA, Monash University; Honorary Senior Fellow within the Indigenous Studies Unit and the School Population and Global Health, University of Melbourne; and Associate Researcher, Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford. Brook and his team, the students and staff of Colly Central, community members from Walgett and the local AECG Members all travelled out to the carved trees for a very touching ceremony on country. School students along with Ms Roslyn McGregor opened the ceremony by welcoming our guest and singing the welcome song in language. Jason Wilson spoke about the significance of the carved trees and what they meant to the Gamilaroi tribe. Everyone on country then walked on the land as a smoking ceremony was performed. When back at school community members and staff watched a short roll of footage on the removal of the carved trees from Collymongle. A short meeting was then held whilst students and staff went back to classes.

Swimming Carnival: Well done to all the students who participated in the school swimming carnival. It was great to see everyone enjoying the iron man and women event along with close individual races and relays. A huge thankyou to Mr Micallef for his organisation of the carnival. The Barwon District Carnival will be taking place on Wednesday in Lightning Ridge. Good luck to all our swimmers who will be participating and competing on the day.
