MHS SAFE HOME PLEDGE 16-17
It is a pleasure to welcome students, staff and parents back for another ex-citing and productive school year. The 2011-12 school year holds many positive and meaningful experiences. We have reached out to welcome the newest members of the Magruder High School family. The freshman class and many transfer students bring a variety of interests, skills and talents to their new school. They have experi-enced numerous achievements and accomplishments in their previous schools. We believe they will make significant contributions to Magruder High School. In addition to the students, we welcome the arrival of several newly hired teachers and support staff. They also bring a variety of talents and skills that will add tremendously to our efforts to provide a meaningful academic and social experience to every child in our school community. Their com-mitment and enthusiasm will enrich the many positive and challenging learning opportunities that are characteristic of the Magruder High School instructional programs and the efforts of our parents in support of all we do. The staff joins me in applauding the work of our parents who continue to support us especially as we prepared for the upcoming school year. This partnership is very evident in the work done by staff, students and parents in the development of the School Improvement Plan (SIP). This yearly proc-ess involves the creation of a plan that serves as the blueprint for instruc-tional programs and efforts to create a positive (continued of Page 2)

Principal’s Perspective: By Mr. Lee Evans (continued from page 1 )
climate for the coming year. Our work together as a school community is a testament to the collabo-ration of all stakeholders in a shared mission. Parent involvement will be a major focus for the 2011-12 school year. Through courageous conversation and the support of many community members, we will bring op-portunities for parents to gain valuable information that will allow them to become more involved in the education of their children. There will be several programs available to parents that will enhance their knowledge of ways of helping students become more available for learning at all academic lev-els and involved in class activities. It is also our goal to provide information to parents that will en-able them to better assist students in making good decisions that will enhance their chances of being successful in school and life. These new initiatives will not only provide parents with additional information and supports, they will strengthen the school-parent partnership in education through better communication. I ask that you join us in efforts to improve our partnership by attending the many meetings and activities spon-sored by the school. I encourage parents to join the PTSA, a driving force in our efforts to inspire every student to Connect, Achieve and Excel at Magruder High School. We encourage your active participation as a member of the Magruder High School family. As we begin the school year, I offer the following quote as a source of motivation: “Our greatest natural resource is the minds of our children.” -- Walt Disney

The Magruder Athletic Booster Club raises money throughout the school year to support all of the teams and student athletes at Magruder. Our biggest source of fundraising comes from the sale of concessions at Magruder athletic events. Op-erating the stand is not possible without the support of volunteers. Volunteering is a good way to get involved at Magruder, meet new people and have fun. We currently are in need of volunteers for the outside concession stand for Fall sports. If you would like to volunteer or would like more information please contact me directly. Thanks.

After Prom Party Needs An Army of Volunteers!
We need a theme for this year. Come help us plan for the after prom party. Meetings for the After Prom Party are the first Wednesday of every month at 7:30 in Room B111. We are going over the different committees that we will need to make this a safe, fun event for our Seniors. The After Prom Party (after prom) is from 1-5 am that gives the Seniors something fun to do afterwards. There will be games, food, and lots of fun. Please come and share your ideas or talent. The earlier we can start on decoration projects, the easier it is to make our event special. Hope to see you there.
Any monetary donations are tax deductable to you! This event costs about $10,000 to produce and financial help from our Magruder families and commu-nity is needed. Please sign up below to help or to make a donation. We are collecting printer cartridges, toner cartridges, and cell phones. There is a collection recycling box in the main office and in the media center.

Do you have room in your heart and your home to help a child? Have you thought about becoming a foster parent? Many times older children in foster care are placed far away from their family members, friends and schools simply because there are not enough foster families close to home. The Safe Homes Pledge is a nation-wide initiative to promote safe activities among our youth by providing appropriate supervision in your home and contact between parents when a child/teen engages in unsafe or illegal behavior.

Please note that the Safe Homes Pledge is not legally binding; it is an understanding among parents who share the values described in the Pledge.

Five Key Skills for Academic Success By: Greatschools Staff http://www.pta.org/3422.htm © 2000 - 2011 PTA | Site mapPermissionsPrivacy PolicyLinking PolicyAdvertiseContact
It takes a combination of skills — organization, time management, prioritization, concentration and motivation — to achieve academic success. Here are some tips to help get your child on the right track.
Talk to your child. To find out which of these skills your child has and which he cacan develop further, start a simple conversation that focuses on his goals. Ask him about his favorite subjects, classes he dreads and whether he's satisfied with his latest progress report.
Listen for clues. Incorporate your own observations with your child's self-assessment. Is your child overwhelmed by assign-ments? She may have trouble organizing time. Does your child have difficulty completing her work? She may get distracted too easily. Is your child simply not interested in school? She may need help getting motivated.
Identify problem areas. Start here to help your child identify which of the five skill areas are trouble spots.
1. Organization Whether it's keeping track of research materials or remembering to bring home a lunch box, children need to be organized to succeed in school. For many students, academic challenges are related more to a lack of organization than to a lack of intellectual ability.
Tips to help your child get organized:
• Make a checklist of things your child needs to bring to and from school every day. Put a copy by the door at home and one in his backpack. Try to check with him each day to see if he remembers the items on the list.
•
Magruder H igh School Courier September, 201 1 Page 15
3. Prioritization Sometimes children fall behind in school and fail to hand in assignments because they simply don't know where to begin. Prioritizing tasks is a skill your child will need throughout life, so it's never too soon to get started.
Tips to help your child prioritize:
• Ask your child to write down all the things he needs to do, including non-school-related activities. • Ask him to label each task from 1 to 3, with 1 being most important. • Ask about each task, so that you understand your child's priorities. If he labels all his social activities as 1, then you know where his attention is focused. • Help your child change some of the labels to better prioritize for academic success. Then suggest he rewrite the list so all the 1s are at the top. • Check in frequently to see how the list is evolving and how your child is prioritizing new tasks.
4. Concentration Whether your child is practicing her second-grade spelling words or studying for a trigonometry test, it's important that she works on schoolwork in an area with limited distractions and interruptions.
Tips to help your child concentrate:
• Turn off access to email and games when your child works on the computer. • Declare the phone and TV off-limits during homework time. • Find space that fits the assignment. If your child is working on a science project, she may need lots of space; if she's
studying for a Spanish test, she will need a well-lit desk. • Help your child concentrate during homework time by separating her from her siblings.
5. Motivation Most children say they want to do well in school, yet many still fail to complete the level of work necessary to succeed academically. The reason is often motivation. Tapping into your child's interests is a great way to get him geared to do well in school.
Tips to help motivate your child:
• Link school lessons to your child's life. If he's learning percentages, ask him to figure out the price of a discounted item next time you shop. • Link your child's interests to academics. If he's passionate about music, give him books about musicians and show how music and foreign languages are
connected. • Give your child control and choices. With guidance, let him determine his study hours, organizing system or school project topics. • Encourage your child to share his expertise. Regularly ask him about what he's learning in school. • Congratulate your child, encourage him and celebrate all his successes.
• Often what holds children back from trying is the fear of failure or the memory of a time they didn't do well. You can help break this cycle by celebrating your child's successes, no matter how small, and by giving him opportunities to succeed academically.
