A huge thank you to the VET staff, Greg Forster, Cynnamon Harper, Daniel Seinor, Keith Fitzpatrick and Molly Zanker for the support you have given to these students to enable them to achieve to this level of excellence.

VET APPLICATIONSYear 10 students have been attending interviews for their chosen Vocational Educational Training fi eld during weeks one and two of term four. They will fi nd out later in the term as to the outcome of their in-terview. Students will attend a VET Readiness program in week seven to prepare them for upper school in 2020.

PRIORITY MAINTENTANCE PROGRAMThe school has received $93,000 from the Government for phase one of maintenance to roofi ng and car parks. This is the fi rst instalment of a total of $803,807. More information on the phase one priorities will be provided in the next newsletter.

CURIOUS MINDS 2019/2020The Australian Mathematics Trust and Australian Science Innovations has invited Year 9 student Lisa Warne to particpate in the 2019/2020 Curious Minds Program. Lisa will join 65 other secondary students from around Australia in an exciting learning program involving biology, Earth and environmental science, informatics, mathematics and physics. Hearing from prominent women in STEM, completing lab work and attending excursions through the program will enable Lisa to forge friendships with like-minded students nationally and provide a head start for her future studies in science and maths. Congratulations Lisa.

YEAR 12 EXIT WEEK Exit week was a huge success. Students really got into the spirit of the dress-up themes and lunch- time activities. The art students did a great job designing and painting the leavers' board. Staff commend the students for minimising the distractions to their own and others' learning while celebrating 12 years of education. The week ended with a breakfast at Pink Lake Golf Club, one of the last times the students will be together.

CLEARANCE FORMSYear 12s need to complete their Clearance Forms and return them to the Front Offi ce as soon as possible. Students will not receive their portfolios with their Statements of Results unless their Clearance Forms have been submitted. Year 12s must remember to clear their lockers as soon as they are fi nished with them and return their keys to the Front Offi ce.

WACE EXAMSThe fi rst ATAR WACE exam commences on Wednesday 30th October at the Seventh Day Adventist Hall where exams are normally held. Students must bring with them their Personalised Examination Timetable (exam slip) signed, or they will not be able to enter the exam hall. Students can download their Personalised Examination Timetable from the student portal at https://studentportal.scsa.wa.edu.au/ . If students cannot print their exam slip, they need to ask for a copy from the Front Offi ce staff. Students need to arrive at the hall 30 minutes before their exam starting time and upon entry, read the exam slip thoroughly to understand all of the conditions.

GRADUATION PRIZE NIGHT CEREMONY: Wednesday, 27th NovemberThe Upper School Prize Night Ceremony will take place at the Civic Centre on Wednesday, 27th November. Students need to assemble in the Reception Room from 5:30pm for a 6:00pm start. Dress for the event is “smart”. We endeavour to complete the ceremony in two hours. It will be assumed that students WILL BE ATTENDING unless they specifi cally contact the Front Offi ce to say that they WILL NOT be coming. This needs to be done before 9:00am on Tuesday, 26th November. This measure is specifi cally designed to avoid the embarrassment that occurs when a special guest attends to present a special award, but the student is absent. Students who do not attend will be able to collect their graduation portfolio etc, from the school’s Front Offi ce after 1:00pm on Thursday, 28th November.

YEAR 12 SUPPER The Prize Night Ceremony will be followed by an informal gathering for Year 12 students, parents and teachers in the Reception Room for supper. To attend this function, students will need to purchase tickets from the Front Offi ce. The cost is $20 per person which includes soft drinks, fi nger food and specifi cally for students, a graduation signing book with a pen. Tickets can be purchased from the Front Offi ce. The night will conclude at 10pm.

Page 4: Principal’s Newsle © er · YEAR 12 COMPULSORY ATAR EXAMINATIONS Year 12 ATAR students are reminded that their external examinations, both written and practical, are compulsory

I would like to thank you for your support in getting your children through their secondary education. I have particularly enjoyed these last four years as their year coordinator and I wish the students all the best for their futures. From Brett Landers - Year 12 Coordinator

YEAR 12 COMPULSORY ATAR EXAMINATIONSYear 12 ATAR students are reminded that their external examinations, both written and practical, are compulsory. If an ATAR student does not sit the exam in a subject, they will not receive any credit for that course, nor will the subject appear on their Statement of Results that every Year 12 student receives.

This may also mean the students' Western Australian Certifi cate of Education (WACE) is in jeopardy for their secondary graduation, particularly if they are relying on the grade of that subject to contribute to the Year 12 C grade requirement for the WACE.

YEAR 12 SICKNESS AND MISADVENTURE FORM FOR YEAR 12 ATAR FINAL EXAMSYear 12 ATAR students - and parents and carers - should be aware of the sickness and misadventure form that the School Curriculum and Standard's Authority (SCSA) requires if a student has missed an ATAR exam through sickness or misadventure (for example, if something unforeseen happens to prevent the student sitting or performing as expected at an exam on a particular day).

The Sickness and Misadventure form is available from the Deputy Principal, Paul Jefferies, and should be sent to SCSA as soon as possible after the event occurs that has impacted on an exam. All sickness forms are required to be signed by a Medical Practitioner. The claim form application will be considered by a SCSA committee for acceptance or rejection.

Hopefully, all will go smoothly for our students. It will help if students have an effective revision program, have a good sleeping regime prior to and during the exam weeks, have a protein-fi lled breakfast or lunch before sitting their exams, keep hydrated through drinking water in the exam, and successfrully keep the nerves at bay by some strategies like mindfulness (e.g. slow, deep breathing) or positive thinking.

The ATAR results this year will be released by the Tertiary Institutions Services Centre (TISC) on 19th December, accessible by students from the TISC website.

TOURNAMENT OF MINDS 2019Tournament of Minds or TOM, is a creative and critical thinking competition that includes schools from around a number of countries. ESHS has a rich tradition of competing in this highly esteemed event. This year with the help of two new facilitators, Sally Elliot (Language Literature) and Jo Bezuidenhout (STEM) and our experienced facilitators Cathy Bamblett and Jazmin Parker, we embarked on the six week challenge with gusto and enthusiasm to take us through the Regional competition in September.

Two weeks later and both the STEM and Language Literature teams were competing at the State fi nal. Long hours incorporating weekend practice, humour and occasional moments of insanity, (including the Fornite dance, the highly competitive fastest bowling, face masks and the 'bag and tag it' routine) saw both teams fi nish with Honours – second in the State - and the STEM team awarded the highly coveted Creativity Award for the highest Spontaneous Score in the regional competition round.

Tournament of Minds is not about the fi nal score (although it is nice) it is about the journey to fi nd a highly creative and critical solution to a problem. It fosters teamwork, creative thinking, problem solving, time management and the ability to have fun.

We thank our administration staff, the school, parents, businesses (particularly Southern Ports Authority, Shire of Esperance, and the Rotary Club of Esperance) and the community for enabling our rural students to showcase their talents. Thank you also to students who fundraised at the Rotary stall at the Esperance Show and the upcoming Quiz night.

If you think you have what it takes to join in Tournament of Minds, why not give it go? You never know, you could be part of ESHS Tournament of Mind tradition and compete at the International level, blazing a trail of creativity and critical problem solving (bag and tag solutions accepted!).From Jazmin Parker - TOM Coordinator

PERTH ROYAL AGRICULTURAL SHOWAt the end of last term and the fi rst week of the school holidays, twelve students and six staff members, with nine cattle and 12 sheep, headed off to the Perth Royal Show so that the students could compete in a number of agricultural competitions.

Esperance Farm Training Centre completed another very successful Perth Royal Show with great results. The students were excellent and represented themselves and the school with aplomb.

The fi rst competitions were Royal Agricultural Society Farm Skills in which students completed 14 events to showcase the varied skills of young farmers. These included wool classing, ram judging, drafting, steer appraisal, tractor driving, fi rst aid, GPS and weed identifi cation.

The rest of the show revolved around preparing the cattle and the sheep for showing. This meant lots of early starts and long days but our students handled this well and achieved some great results. Congratulations to Year 10 students Henco Maree and Jasmine Vincent, who were competing in their fi rst show. Henco placed third for his age group. Congratulations also to our Australian Wool Innovation team of Jordan Forbes, Jade Challinger, Lily Daw and Taia Farnham-Offer for their excellent efforts.

A big thank you to Crystal Henderson, Vicky Hempsell, Mick Harris and Chris Vibart who all put in extra hours to make the show such a successful event for our students. It is great to have staff who are willing to do extra so our students don't miss out on such amazing opportunities. A special thanks to Jan O'Connell who gave up her holidays and volunteered to support our students. From Danny Pollard - Program Coordinator Agriculture

Welcome back to all our wonderful Year 7 students for Term 4. I am looking forward to working with all of our students again this term. Term 4 tends to be very busy, with end-of-year activities and final assessments in many subjects.

Being Sun Smart A reminder to all students about being mindful of the heat and sun as the weather warms up. Please ensure you are wearing your hat and sunscreen during the recess and lunch breaks, and drink plenty of water to hydrate yourself throughout the day.

Hello Parents and Guardians,

Welcome back! Term 4 is always a busy but fun term, especially as the days become warmer and sunnier. It has been good to hear some of the adventures that students and their families had over the holidays and everyone seems ready to finish the school year well.

Girls Football

ESHS sent 18 students from across Year 8, 9 and10 to Kalgoorlie to compete against John Paul College and Kalgoorlie-Boulder Community High School in a girls football competition. They did a great job playing in taxing 35 degrees heat and windy conditions. The girls represented the school with pride and played some great football, winning their final match against Kalgoorlie-Boulder. Congratulations to Year 9 team members Bianca Hartley, Rani Hotker, Shelby Kennedy, Holly Kiel, and Cherry Rickerby; and the coaches Abby Leyendekkers and Sam Curnow. I look forward to next year’s competition being on home soil.

Curious Minds – Lisa Warne

As mentioned in the Principal’s news, Lisa Warne has been selected for the Curious Minds program. Congratulations Lisa, this is a huge achievement and I look forward to hearing how the first camp goes later this year.

Faction Points

The Faction Points competition has been tight all year with a few lead changes. At the moment Dempster is in the overall lead (in all year groups); however, in the Year 9 Faction Points Table, Eyre leads, followed by Flinders, then Dempster and then Rossiter. We use Faction Points to select Merit Awards and Reward Day activities. Most recently 20 students won two-day passes to the Esperance Show.

If you have any concerns or issues regarding your child’s schooling, please contact me on 9071 9555 or

by emailing [email protected]

Kind Regards,

Beau Scanlon
