Principal’s Message Issue 17.16 6 June 2016 Quality Education in a Stimulating Environment Dear Parents Last week the school commenced a chocolate drive. Every family was given a box of Cadbury chocolates to sell as an initial fundraising exercise to assist with the preparation of our major Family Fun Day initiative on Sunday 6 November. Your assistance in selling the chocolates is greatly appreciated by the school community. We request that students do not bring their chocolates to school to sell as we have a small group of students who are anaphy- lactic to nuts. Your co-operation in this fundraising drive is greatly appreciated. Thank you to Mrs Farquhar and Mr Field for their organisation of the event. Eye Testing At the beginning of the year notes were sent home to families regarding Optometrists coming to the school to con- duct eye tests on students. This service will commence this Wednesday and continue until all the students booked in for the testing are examined. This is a great opportunity to have your child’s eyes tested. For any further infor- mation, please contact the school. Zone Cross Country Congratulations to all our cross country athletes who competed recently at the Zone carnival. It was a very suc- cessful day with Engadine West winning the overall carnival trophy as well as the Handicap Trophy which takes into account the student population at each school. Congratulations to the students and staff. Good luck to those students who will now compete at Regional level. Biggest Morning Tea Our annual Biggest Morning Tea will be held tomorrow, Tuesday 7 June commencing at 8.30am. Parents, carers and students are invited to attend this event to help raise money for the Cancer Council. Four courageous stu- dents will have their hair cut and shaved, great work Luke, Riley, Skyla and Kiarna! There will be food on sale, stalls and lots of fun activities. We hope to see many people in attendance. Students are invited to wear crazy hair but we request that students not use hair colour particularly with the current wet weather. The school will resume normal operation at 9.30am. Donations can also be made by visiting the Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea 2016 website and search for the Engadine West Public School fundraising page. Create South A number of our talented students recently auditioned for Create South which is a creative arts initiative that pro- duces a performance utilising students from various schools in the area. Well done to all those students who audi- tioned and a particular mention to Haylee Mc, Mark T, Molly F, Sami H and Caitlin S for being selected to be part of the Create South production. Parent Workshops - Survey

Engadine West has a goal to strengthen our ties with our parent community so that we can work in concert to achieve the best education for our students. We are considering offering workshops or information nights in the second half of the year for parents. These workshops will focus on how we teach certain aspects of the curricu-lum and how you can help your child at home. The results from this survey will inform the topics and times of-fered to parents. We are exploring the option of having some sessions during class time but this can only occur if there is enough demand. To have your say please complete the survey at this link https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/VPSQZWX The sur-vey will close at the end of this week. Hugh Hogan Assistant Principal

Deputy Principal’s Report This is a brief update upon the Teachers Professional Learning (TPL) within the school. Our staff have been very busy with Reporting and Assessment for most of this term and I appreciate all of the staff for their dedication. Today we will do our Teacher Professional Learning on Student Self-Reflection. Mr Hogan will be delivering this TPL (Teacher Professional Learning). Ms Davis has also been providing TPL opportunities to the teachers during their lunchtimes on the use of iPads. I appreciate our teachers giving up their own time for these pursuits. With our implementation of the new Science Syllabus we arranged for a Science Incursion. The students and staff really enjoyed this “Science Day” Incursion as it was fun and engaging. Most appropriately it engaged our students in line with the new Science Syllabus that we have already implemented in Engadine West. This incur-sion was great value and I thank Mrs Way for organising this. Jason Wilkins Deputy Principal

Our school is once again participating in the Sutherland Shire Schools Music Festival at the Sutherland Enter-tainment Centre in August. This year, tickets for this event will only be available online. All tickets will go on sale on Wednesday 8 June. On this day, tickets will be available to anyone wishing to purchase on a first-in, first served basis. As tickets traditionally sell out for some of the concerts, we recommend you order yours as early as possible. In the unlikely event that there are unsold tickets for a particular concert, these will be availa-ble at the box office on the afternoon/night of the concert. Tickets this year are $18.50. Due to health and safety regulations, the Entertainment Centre will not allow children to sit on parents’ laps. Each person attending the concert will require a ticket. The Sutherland Entertainment Centre will be managing the sale of tickets this year. To order and purchase tick-ets, go to Concerts 1-10 http://www.sutherlandshire.nsw.gov.au/Community/Entertainment-Centre/Whats-On/Sutherland-Shire-Schools-Music-Festival-Concerts-1-to-10 There will be tickets for fifteen concerts available for purchase so it is very important that you select the correct concert/s. Our school will be participating in the following concerts:

When your booking is complete you will have the opportunity to print your tickets. We strongly recommend that you do so and then keep these in a safe place. You will require these tickets on the night of the concert for en-try. If you are unable to print your own ticket, you will need to record the booking number and receipt number and then take this information to the box office on the night of the concert. This process may become time con-suming on the night, so where you can, print your own tickets please! When ordering your tickets, you will have the opportunity to pre-purchase a printed program @ $5.00. This pro-gram contains all of the concerts as well as artwork by students from the shire and makes a wonderful souvenir. If you have any questions about this please contact the school.

In Week 4, the Bright Green Sparks prepared the veggie garden for planting. They also aerated the soil in the native garden. In week 5, we planted the veggie gardens with broccoli, lettuce, rocket and shallots. These veggies are all suita-ble for the winter climate. In the native garden, we planted new seedlings. This is how we did it: Put a stake in the aerated soil Dug a reasonable sized hole next to the stake Put the seedling into the hole Covered the roots of the seedling with soil Poured 2L of water over the soil around the roots of the plant Put two more stakes around the plant to make a triangle Placed a plastic shield around the plant to protect it Thankyou Mrs Herd, Mrs Hattenfels and Mrs Milliken for using your personal time to help out, and thank you to all the other parents who have allowed their children to participate in the Bright Green Spark Environmental Planting Day 2016. We are hoping that the showery weather will not only help the seedlings but it will also help the dry soil in the native garden. Our plants will be harvested at the end of the year and will be put on sale for you to buy!! By Olivia W and Sara P

Bright Green Spark News

Just a reminder that Winter uniform is now in place. Some students are wearing articles of summer uniform. If your child has any issues regarding wearing appropriate uniform, please notify us via the Front Office.

School Uniform

It is a good idea that children establish healthy hygiene habits. Liquid soap dispensers are provided in the toilets. Students should establish good routines about regularly using the toilets and washing hands. Another important matter for school children is keeping hair tidy and clean. Parents are asked to make regular checks for head lice and apply appropriate treatment. Long hair should be neatly tied back off the face with green or gold hair accessories or plain bands.

Good Health and Hygiene

We are proud to have extensive parent involvement in the school. For WH & S reasons we need to have all parents who are working in classrooms to sign the Visitor’s Book when they arrive and leave the school. All visitors are also required to wear a “Visitors” sticker (the Visitor’s sign on book and stickers are located in the Front Office). This procedure is important in the case of an emergency/evacuation in the school. The Admin-istration staff will then know who is officially on site. Please note that canteen helpers are excluded as the can-teen has its own Visitor’s Book.
