Newsletter Week 2 Term 3 2020 Principal’s message In this current climate, which continues to be challenging for many of us, I am proud of how our students have jumped into Term 3 learning with such dedication and enthusiasm. We may not necessarily know what tomorrow will bring, however we do know that at Summer Hill Public School the education of our students remains at the forefront. You will be invited to meet with your child’s teacher later this term – virtually or face to face. We look forward to discussing your child’s achievements and learning goals with you. After her long standing service to Public Education, 40 years which includes over 16 years at Summer Hill Public School, class teacher Ms Alison Wagstaffe is retiring. We would like to acknowledge and thank Ms Wagstaffe for the dedication and care she has shown to the students she’s taught. Ms Wagstaffe’s impact was widespread, she says ‘The highlight of my time here was producing Susical the Musical in 2007 and Louis the Fly in 2016. I also enjoyed being the co-ordinator of the Art Shows for many years. I loved bringing back the old fashioned notion of teaching children how to sew at school. I was lucky to have one of my favourite classes twice. Once in Year 4 and then in Year 6. Those students brought me great joy and many laughs. That year my Year 6 class performed with such enthusiasm in Louis the Fly and they made me so proud and gave me many happy moments to treasure’. We wish you all the best Ms Wagstaffe. As you may be aware, due to current Covid restrictions our P&C meetings are held via zoom. That means parents, carers and community members can join the meeting from the comfort of their own home (and me too!). If you are one of our many parents unable to attend meetings in the hall at 7.15pm Tuesday evenings, please consider joining us for a meeting via zoom while this platform is being used. Hopefully by now your child/ren have come home excited about our new multicourt. After numerous delays it was completed in the holiday break. The multicourt is a welcome addition to our school and provides more handball courts, a basket court, a netball court, volleyball/newcomball court, and two half soccer fields. This initiative is the result of a strong partnership between the Department of Education, the school, P&C, students and their families – thank you and well done everyone. Last week, our Summer Hill Blues assemblies were held to acknowledge students who have been outstanding role models, demonstrating Respect, Resilience and Responsibility (the 3R’s) at Summer Hill Public School. Due to the Department’s current restrictions parents and carers couldn’t join us this special day, so we took a photo for you. We’ll send it to you this week. In our previous newsletter we reminded students to wear school uniform and I’m pleased to say we have had a positive response. In acknowledging student choice and voice we have good news – new royal blue baseball style caps for our Year 3-6 students. Please purchase one for your child if they wear a non-uniform baseball style cap. We’ve even left off the logo so the kids can wear them anytime. Caps can be purchased from our friendly administration staff for $10.00 or via Pickles uniform shop. You can find more information here https://summerhill- p.schools.nsw.gov.au/about-our-school/what-we-offer/uniform-shop.html or by calling our office. Thank you for taking the time to read about what’s happening at Summer Hill Public School, we are excited to report what our students have been doing. Kids giving back - Congratulations and thank you to your students. They have made an impact!

NAIDOC Week performance by Walangari Karntawarra

Canteen

Summer Hill PS new canteen operators are Yummy Bears Kiosk. Order lunch and recess via flexischools (by 8am) or over the counter. Canteen is open from 8:30am for purchasing food. Bring your own fork, supporting SHPS sustainability initiative, alternately purchase an eco friendly fork for 20c.

On Wednesday 22 July all stages attended performances by the multi talented Ar-

rernte Elder Walangari Karntawarra. His presentations included didgeridoo, stories,

language, bush tucker and dancing. Students commented that Walangari was a wel-

coming and friendly person who taught them a lot of facts they did not know. Some of

these facts include; cultural gender roles, how to make a didgeridoo, what the lines of

ochre represent, the many uses for a paperbark and boomerang, icons in Central and

Western Desert Aboriginal Art and how to use an Emu Caller! In Drama lessons we

have been using Western Desert Iconography to inspire our verbal story telling.

I write to acknowledge the volunteer work undertaken by members of your school community through participation in programs wi th Kids Giving Back. In Term 4 2019, December School holidays 2019/2020 and Term 1 & 2 2020 the following students, Alexandra N, Louis N and Micah M-C participated in one or more of our programs: Cook4Good, Cook4Dignity, School Holiday Programs, Connect4Good & Care2Give (COVID-19 Program). It is always a pleasure to have young people and their families engage in our programs. Your students have undertaken these opportunities in their lei-sure time and facilitators of the programs have been unanimous in their praise for the enthusiasm and engagement of all our young volunteers. Kids Giving Back is a charity whose mission is to create the next Generation of Generosity. Our programs are delivered for children 6-18 years old and their families and offer opportunities to assist vulnerable people in the community. This year we reached the milestone of 25,000 participants in our programs since we began in 2012. Robyn Monro Miller F.A.C.E CEO www.kidsgivingback.org In the Term 1 holidays we went to the big kitchen to cook. We made cookies, bread , soup and pasta. We then packaged it and gave it to families and the elderly. We met people and felt good about giving them food we cooked. Micah C-M 5AW, Alexandra N 3/4PC, Louis N 6FD

'Wear it Purple Day' celebrates all the diverse and rainbow families and children who make up our community, and embraces the message that 'All young people have a right to be proud of who they are'. Students are invited, if they wish, to wear purple (a lot or a little) to school on Friday 28 August to celebrate 'Wear it Purple Day'. Sadly, we won't be able to hold our Wear it Purple picnic in the park this year, due to Covid-19 health restrictions. But we'd still love you to share your experiences and thoughts about what 'wear it purple' means for you, your child, your family. Please email [email protected]

Across the stages

Welcome back to Term 3! Kindergarten have settled back into school and are working hard. The teachers have planned some fun activities we will be completing as a whole grade. This term, we start News Café! Everyone in Kindergarten tells their news on Monday. We will be in small groups of four students, mixed with one person from each class. We sit knee to knee and tell our news to our friends. It was wonderful seeing all the interesting items that came in for news yes-terday. We are also planning whole grade writing on Wednesday. This term we are focussing on writing information reports. The doors between KIJ and KDT will be open and all the students will learn together. We will break off into smaller groups to complete our writing activities. Here are photos of our beautiful classrooms. Regards

Stage 1

Stage 1 students have been learning how to write recounts, information reports and creative stories. Stage 1 students have been learning about living things in Science and writing information reports about different animals they are studying. Year 2 EALD students have been learning to be creative with their writing as well. They have created some imaginary themed information reports on unusual animals.

Students in Stage 1 are learning the difference between fact and fiction, how characters can make a story more exciting and they have also learnt about

the structure of a story, information report and a recount. The children have used their imaginations to write some creative pieces of work using descrip-

tive language. We are very proud of the writing on display in our Stage 1 classrooms!

Library

During Library lessons in Term 3 we are exploring the short-listed Australian Children’s Book Week titles and considering the theme: Curious Creatures, Wild Minds.

We are glad to announce that the Summer Hill Public School community will

be able to join the national celebrations for Australian Children’s Book Week

this year. The date has been officially changed to October, we will hold our

annual character parade in some form on Friday 23rd October.

Australian Children’s Book Week 2020

The closing date for entries into the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge is Friday 28th August 2020! Students are encouraged to take part in The NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge 2020. The SHPS class teachers and teacher librarians recommend the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) as a great way to extend students’ reading skills as they enjoy a wide variety of classic and contemporary children’s literature. Titles in the K-2* section of the PRC are marked with a pink star and located separately in the school library for ease of selection. At Summer Hill PS, PRC books in the Year 3 and 4 section of the challenge are marked with a yellow star and a selection is available on display. Books in the Year 5 to 6 section are marked with a green star. Year 5 and 6 students participating in the PRC are able to self-select items of interest to them from the library catalogue. Once read, each PRC title should be recorded into the student’s reading record online, click the image below to find out how:

NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge 2020

Rule changes to the NSW PRC make it easier to complete the 2020 challenge during these topsy-turvy times. Key changes include: - All students will be able to include 10 choice books on their 2020 Student reading records. - All students will be able to include books read as part of collaborative reading with teachers or parents/ carers, either in person or online. (This in-cludes ebooks, Story Box Library viewing and Audible audio books available through our school library). - Students who do not complete the Challenge in 2020 will not be disadvantaged from achieving cumulative PRC awards in the future. Use the same student username and password as you use to log into school computers to find more detailed information about rule changes to the NSW PRC 2020 through the following link: https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/logon.html *Please note that ten titles read aloud to Kindergarten, Year One and Year Two students during library lessons in Term 1 have been added to the students’ PRC records online.
