Principal’s Message Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of St Joseph’s College, Last Sunday’s Gospel reading was one that is pertinent to my next item. The scripture passage from Luke (14:1, 7-14) relayed one of Christ’s parables relating to humility. It spoke of the importance of not exalting yourself, or placing yourself in a position of higher importance than others. Christ’s ultimate message was that “those who raise themselves up will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be raised up”. He was of course using the parable as a message of salvation in our lives. We are lucky at St Joseph’s College that so many students and teachers place a high level of importance of ‘humbling themselves’. Students who understand Christ’s message, reiterated by Pope Francis, that we need to go to the fringes and help those who may not be able to help themselves. Actions that exemplify this take the form of St Martha’s Aged Care visits, Meals on Wheels, You Have a Friend, St Vinnies Group, the Environment Group and our Student Representative Council. I have only named but a few examples but I would like to thank and congratulate all students and staff who ‘humble themselves’ by placing themselves at the service of others. STUDENT LEADERS 2019-2020 Being at the service of others is at the core of our Student Leaders. These students take on roles and give generously of their time to ensure that there is a direct link between student needs and requests and the staff. GRADUATION

Our Year 12 students now have under three weeks remaining of their school lives. This is the culmination of a thirteen-year journey and we look forward to celebrating the end of this part of their lives. All parents and carers of Year 12 students have received correspondence outlining the events that the SJC community provides for our graduands. If you have any queries, please contact the College. With the pressures that come with completing the HSC, it may be worthwhile spending some time viewing what the experts have to say regarding how to best support your child. A number of very useful resources can be found here. Please note that the last day of term is Friday 27 September and there is an expectation that all students are in attendance to support our departing Year 12s. As published in an earlier newsletter, attendance on the last day of Terms 1, 2 and 3 will appear on student reports.

DAN HAESLER EVENING It is great to see that so many parents and carers have already signed up for our evening with Dan Haesler on Monday 16 September (6:30pm start, earlier for drinks and food). Dan will be presenting on the topic of ‘Growth Mindset and Resilience’ in young people (see the flyer repeated in today’s newsletter). Our staff will then be working for the day with Dan on Tuesday 17 September (as advised previously, a pupil-free day). Please ensure you have made alternative care arrangements for your child.

SCHOOLTV The link provided in the section above relates to the resource SJC subscribes to, SchoolTV. There is a vast number of topics covered in the website to help parents and carers deal with the challenges faced with raising teens. Some of these include internet addiction, sexting, diet and nutrition, school transition and sleep to name a few. Please spend some time looking through the free resource so you can best support your child.

CONGRATULATIONS Well done to Kalani Baines who recently returned from the World Dragon Boating Championships in Thailand where he won an amazing three bronze medals. It is quite a feat to make it to represent your country in any event but to be so successful is brilliant. Kalani did all of this despite suffering an illness during his time away. Great work, Kalani! We also wish Mr Damien Quinn all the best as he prepares to fulfill his final year of duties as the Australian Schoolboys Rugby League Assistant Coach. It is a highly distinguished position and a testament to the hard work and commitment Damien has displayed for his beloved game. Kind regards Mr Scott Thomson Principal ([email protected])

FINAL ROUND OF VACCINATIONS FOR 2019

The final round of vaccination for 2019 takes place tomorrow, Tuesday 10 September, at which time NSW Health nurses will be present at the College to administer the vaccinations. All Year 7 students will receive their Gardasil (HPV) Dose 2. Other vaccinations will take place for:

NSW Health would also like to impress on families the importance of our students having breakfast on vaccination day as it will help avoid faints. Students will be asked questions by the nurses and may be asked to have some sustenance before their vaccination will be given. Should you have any questions regarding the school vaccination program, or need to discuss any concerns you may have, please contact Bernadette Williams, School Immunisation Coordinator, Lismore Public Health Unit on (02) 6620 7503, or visit https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/immunisation/Pages/default.aspx.

CURRICULUM

YEAR 11 FINAL COURSE EXAMINATIONS –

THURSDAY 19 TO THURSDAY 26 SEPTEMBER The Year 11 Final Course Examinations for students in an ATAR pattern of study commence Thursday 19 (Week 9) through to Thursday 26 September (Week 10). Timetables have been emailed to all students. Students need only attend school when they have a designated exam. Students in the Work Readiness Pathway will not be required to attend. As is standard practice at the College, if your child is absent from an exam or other assessment task due to illness, parents/carers must phone the College to notify of the absence prior to the commencement of the exam. For students in Years 10-12, a medical certificate needs to be submitted together with a completed variation form. This is to be handed in to their course teacher. Mrs Kathy McAlister Leader of Curriculum

YEAR 12

WEEK 10 IS THE FINAL WEEK OF FORMAL CLASSES FOR YEAR 12

Year 12 will finish their last week of formal classes in Week 10. With only three weeks left of this term, Year 12 should be focusing all their efforts on revision in preparation for the HSC. A letter was issued to all Year 12 last week – and also circulated via the Skoolbag app and emailed to parents – outlining expectations/ providing information on how to finish their last few weeks of formal schooling. The Year 12 Graduation Mass will take place on the evening of Thursday 26 September at 7:00pm at St Joseph’s Catholic Church, Tweed Heads. A practice will be held at 1:30pm at the Church. Students are required to be in full formal College uniform. This includes ties for boys and the usual regulations for jewellery and general grooming. They also need to have their journey candles with them so it would be best for them to bring them to the practice on Thursday afternoon. The whole year group will celebrate with our staff at the Year 12 Farewell Breakfast from 7:00am on the morning of Friday 27 September. They will then attend a whole-school Year 12 Farewell Assembly in the Doyle Centre. Parents and carers are invited to join in the celebrations at St Joseph’s Catholic Church on the evening of Thursday 26 September. We also extend an invitation to parents and carers to attend the Year 12 Farewell Assembly on Friday morning at 9:00am for 9:15am.

LEGACY WEEK 2019

LEGACY THANK YOU 2019

Thank you for the generous support of the Legacy Week Appeal. St Joseph’s College raised $348.20 in this annual fund raiser. As mentioned at assembly, it was impressive that the community supported this so generously, especially when we probably don’t see directly the impact it has for local families who have lost someone in the armed services. The 41 students who gave of their time during the week to sell Legacy badges, pens, key rings and teddy bears were:

Year 7: Ann Aji Thayyil (7E), Emily Boresch (7C), Kalindi Broadwood (7F), Thomas Busbridge (7C), Jalia Dubber (7E), Tayliah Edwards (7C), Balin Fitt (7A), Sarah Forbes (7D), Sami Kennedy (7E), River Randal (7A), Thomas Reid (7C), Ashton Riley (7C), Annabelle Stribling (7A), Daniel Van Zuylen (7D)

PEDAGOGY

Getting Motivated To Do Your Work

If you are struggling to get motivated to do your schoolwork, sadly there is no magic solution. However, here are a few strategies you can try from the DEVELOPING MOTIVATION and OVERCOMING PROCRAS-TINATION units if motivation or procrastination is an issue for you:

REWARDS: Set yourself small specific tasks to do with a specific reward at the end of the task. For some people little rewards are enough to get them going.

CHUNK IT DOWN: If the work seems overwhelming or boring or unappealing, break it down into small bearable chunks and just do it one piece at a time.

FRIENDS: Work with a friend or else tell your friend what work you want to get done and then check in on each other at the end of the night. Help each other stay on track.

RULE OF 3: If you can’t get started, write down the three (3) most important things you must get done before you go to bed, then don’t even look at any other tasks until these three (3) are completed.

MOTIVATING IMAGES: Find slogans, or images that motivate you and put them near your workspace. Some people are motivated by pain (thinking of the consequences if you don’t study) while others are motivated by pleasure (thinking of all the good outcomes that will happen if you do study).

Dear Parents/Carers, If you have checked the calendar for the term you would have noticed that Tuesday 17 September (Week 9, Term 3) is a Staff Professional Learning and Development Day for us at SJC (ie. a pupil-free day). On this day, staff at the College will be working with internationally renowned presenter Dan Haesler on developing growth mindsets in our school. Growth mindset education is not something new at the College. Professor Carol Dweck (Stanford University) coined the terms “growth” and “fixed” mindsets in her breakthrough research a decade ago. In Year 7 Learning to Learn lessons your children have been informed of the ability of the human brain to grow, reshape/rewire and learn new things. Growth mindset information has also been communicated to students at assemblies over the years. Dan’s visit will assist the College in taking our next steps to support teachers and students in developing growth mindset habits. His visit will compliment and build on the work that has been done by the Leaders of Learning this year around inquiring into the mindsets of teachers and students. We are looking forward to the learning that the day will present and to building this learning into our daily teaching. Mr Carlo Trimboli, Leader of Pedagogy

Year 10 were blessed with glorious weather for their Geography field-trip last Friday when they visited a range of coastal locations to investigate the functioning, change and management of coastal environments. Guest speakers from the Tweed River Sand Bypass Project (TRSBP), Fingal Head Coastcare and Indigenous Cultural Education enlightened the students about both the challenges and the importance of managing our coastlines in a sustainable manner. The students’ comments below, illustrate how much was learnt from the day:

The excursion helped give me a much greater knowledge of the natural processes. We learnt about how waves and the weather affect our beaches while volunteers explained what practices they have put into place to stop problems from occurring such as erosion.

Humans have a major impact on coastal environments because we build on coast lines and cause erosion to the sand dunes.

I learnt that humans must learn and understand a lot before trying to manage coastal environments.

We learned that the work that Coastal Care has done has been vital to the regrowth of natural plants and vegetation and significantly improved the overall health of the Coastal Environment.

I found the most valuable part of the trip to be to the TRSBP as I found it informative and that I could apply it directly to the assignment. I could understand coastal processes and their link with humans. I also found the speakers very informative. Mr Tom Nethery Leader of Learning – HSIE

Well done to the junior, intermediate and senior girls netball teams who made the long trip to Port Macquarie to compete in the Diocesan Netball Carnival. The senior girls and intermediate girls had many successful games, with the intermediate girls bowing out in the semi-finals by only a few points. The junior girls were also successful, however were unlucky to miss out on progressing to the finals on points for and against. The girls displayed an impressive amount of talent only to be super ceded by their sportsmanship on the day. Well done girls! Thank you to Mr Burns, Mrs Burns and Miss Burns for giving of their time to take these teams away.
