Principal’s Desk: Alistair Williams As always, term 1 has been filled with many highlights, not the least of which was winning the interschool after not having done so for many years. This is a credit to Mr Luke Driver and his team, who organised many extra trainings to ensure that this team was as well prepared as it could be. Along with the sporting highlights, there have also been many moments I have enjoyed within the classrooms, watching our teachers work with the students. The Year 12s are continuing to embrace the year, recognising that it is their last at the school. They have all set goals and are working hard towards achieving them. Many will participate in exam revision and study sessions during the holidays preparing them for the vital challenges at the end of the year. At the other end of the spectrum, the receptions have embraced the Wambana classrooms, and are quickly learning their sounds, whilst also learning to read through an improved program introduced to the school by our Early Years leader, Shelley Hier. As a father, I have been amazed at the progress of my own child within this group of children, who now attempts to read everything he can as we ride or drive down the street. The rapid learning curve reminds me of how important the early years are and how we all must ensure that these students are given the best opportunities to learn. Within the school there have been many other exciting developments in classrooms with literacy and numeracy continuing to be a focus for all. Our key leaders in this space have continued to challenge and develop the educators at Kadina Memorial so that we can be the best school for your child. Term 2 will be another busy term with most of the NAPLAN this year undertaken online. Students have been preparing for this event and our internal checks suggest that we are well prepared for this change. The Premier’s Reading Challenge also gets into full swing and I encourage all students and parents to participate. The evidence around the links between children reading or being read to and a successful future is clear and I hope to see many students complete this challenge in 2019. Along with this we will have the band travelling to Generations in Jazz, the running of the cross country, Youth Opportunities, Reconciliation Week and Australian Business Week. Therefore, as one busy term finishes, another one full of opportunities and challenges begins. This is a credit to Mr Luke Driver and his team, who organised many extra trainings to ensure that this team was as well prepared as it could be.

Principal’s report continued:

STEM Works classrooms opening The official STEM Works classrooms were opened by Member for Narungga Fraser Ellis with the event featured on this week’s front cover.

It was an excellent example of student leadership and showcased the skills used in the real world. Thank you to Stage 2 Creative Arts student Damon Mills who designed the invitation, Milania Power and Kytanna Buckskin who welcomed our guests to Narungga country, KMSC captains Mackenzie Neumann, Victoria McKay and Maddison Cundy for confidently presenting speeches, Miss Frost’s Stage 1 and Stage 2 Hospitality students who delivered amazing catering, and all of the students in Mrs Barry’s, Mr Easter’s and Mr Nelson’s classes who demonstrated their learning in the new STEM classrooms. A tour of Wambana allowed reception students to meet visitors and share their work. It was an enjoyable event and is the culmination of three years’ work by former principals Dean Angus, Debbie Terrett, business manager Carol Saunders and key staff. Thank you to all involved during the planning and construction phase.

Governing Council update On behalf of the Kadina Memorial School community I thank Michael Glasson for leading the Governing Council since amalgamation in 2013, after he informed me he would be stepping down from the role.

Mr Glasson has been an integral member of school governance, actively participating on many committees and school events, most recently assisting with the STEM Works redevelopment.

Thank you Michael for your time, expertise and guidance.

At the recent Annual General Meeting we farewelled long term members Mark Northcott, Andrew Pearce and Brian Crosby.

Mr Northcott and Mr Crosby shared their thoughts about being a Governing Council member, with both commenting on the enjoyable nature of the meetings, their own personal learning, the ability to put names to faces and the opportunity to give back to the community. Mr Northcott is happy to talk with interested parents and caregivers who may be considering nominating for Governing Council membership. Please contact the school for his details.

Parent and Friends At the term 1 meeting we welcomed occupational therapists, Joanne and Charlotte, who shared many wonderful nature play and loose part ideas.

Sub School News

R-6 Corner: Millions of words and more! It’s been a great term in the R-6 sub-school. Our Year 3-6 students have, using the Literacy Pro program, read over 13 million words! This is a magnificent achievement as reading each day builds stamina, helps extend vocabulary and our understanding of people, places and events. In addition, our Reception students have learnt their Jolly Phonics sounds using hand gestures as they say the sound and the Year 1/2 students have read many, many, many of their take home readers which has helped them to build their reading fluency and understanding. With maths all staff have focussed on developing students’ understanding of number through subsitising cards and maths games. By playing games students’ maths fluency has developed whilst reasoning and problem skills have been sharpened. It’s particularly pleasing to note many are talking about the maths strategies they are using to be more efficient mathematicians eg rather than counting on 7 + 6 a student was heard to say ‘I doubled 6 and added one’ – talk such as this tells us so much about our learners. Students, teachers and families have celebrated these successes in many ways including 320 plus postcards acknowledging leadership, kindness, reading, writing, maths and more improvements. It has been a great term: we thank families for their willingness to meet with us regarding their child’s learning, ensuring home learning occurs and children sleep well and attend regularly so their learning is maximised. Have a great break. Debbie Terrett Head of R-6 Deputy Principal

Unit News Working with students with disabilities is both challenging and rewarding for the staff who work with our students on a daily basis. When they walk through the gates or doors of our setting we are committed, in partnership with our families, to providing our students with the best possible learning opportunities. Often this learning cannot occur if the student is in a highly emotional frame of mind due to environmental factors that have impacted on their ability to self-regulate. Our passionate staff have been trained in best practice to implement strategies to help them understand and feel what’s going on inside their bodies, and to deal with sensory overload often leading to high levels of anxiety. The ability for our non-verbal students to communicate their needs and wants is also a high priority and they all have access to the communication app Proloquo2Go on iPads when they have ‘something to say.’ Using a Core Word of the Week approach gives staff the opportunity to model commonly used words, supporting the students to familiarise themselves with the vocabulary to use to communicate. Some of our students also have access to Proloquo2Go at home which supports the learning done at school. Feel free to chat with any of our Unit staff if you wish to know more about the positive strategies we use to support our students. Have a great two week break and we look forward to continuing newsletter reports next term. Sandy Mumford Unit Coordinator

Middle School Middle School students attended an intensive story writing workshop with author Aleesha Darlinson during Literacy Week recently.

They studied how to turn a story idea into a well-structured and catchy sentence to capture a reader’s interest and imagination.

Year 7 chickens Many families of year 7 students now have an additional feathered family member, following the conclusion of the chook project.

Through study and caring for a chicken, students engaged in hands-on literacy and numeracy learning, weighing and calculating their chicken’s growth, designing homes and completing a chook book.

‘The chicken activities and looking after the chicks over the last few weeks was really fun! I was able to imprint my chicken!’ - Mia Cruett

‘It was really cool having the chickens because they were so cute.’ - Max Loveridge

‘It was a good experience having the chickens in the classroom and I learnt lots about chickens.’ - Alycia Lang

Senior School Kadina Memorial School is offering Year 12 students the opportunity to attend the Elevate Education seminar "Ace Your Exams" on Tuesday 16 April, the first week of the school holidays. All students with end-of-year exams are expected to attend. In order to ensure there are enough seats in each session, you need to register through Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/2019-kms-elevate-ace-your-exams-session-tickets-59491608001

The Ace Your Exams seminar covers: • Highest value exam preparation tasks • Fixing mistakes to ensure constant

improvement • Time allocation during exam preparation • Techniques for managing stress & time

pressure in exams

Post-Seminar Support Elevate's support doesn't end at the conclusion of the seminar. Schools are provided with in-class activity and implementation kits so that teachers can integrate the skills into their specific subjects. Online Support The student portal guides students through all aspects of study technique, exam preparation and more. Students are given opportunities to ask questions which are answered by past top performing students so that support and help can continue beyond the classroom. Megan Tucker Year 12 Year Level Manager

Music mentoring Music transcends age barriers, as evident during a music mentoring lesson with year 10 students teaching year 6’s how to read music and play the guitar.

NAPLAN NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy. NAPLAN is not about passing or failing, but about assessing learning progress and is one of the tools used by teachers to measure student progress. In 2019, for the first time, all assessments, apart from the year 3 writing, will be conducted online in weeks 3-4 of next term. One of the features of NAPLAN Online is tailored (or adaptive) testing, where the test automatically adapts to a student’s test performance. The test presents questions of higher or lower complexity, depending on a student’s performance. This approach is designed to assess a wider range of student abilities and to measure student achievement more precisely. A student’s overall NAPLAN score is based on the number and complexity of questions they answer correctly with individual student performance shown on a national achievement scale for each test. NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills students are already learning through the school curriculum. Teachers ensure students are familiar with the test formats and provide appropriate support and guidance. If you have any questions about your child's preparation for NAPLAN please talk with their teacher. Wherever possible, schools will organise for individual students who are absent at the time of testing to complete missed tests at another time during testing week. Parents or carers may withdraw their child from the tests to address issues such as religious beliefs and philosophical objections to testing. For more information about NAPLAN visit the NAP website www.nap.edu.au or contact Tarryn Germein (Years 7 and 9 students) or Debbie Terrett (Years 3 and 5 students).

Staff and students participated in a statewide NAPLAN trial recently.

Animation workshop On Tuesday 2 April Paul Rutter from Paul Rutter Draws visited Kadina Memorial School to work with 7KT Creative Arts for an introductory Animation workshop. Students learnt about the walk cycle and squash/stretch technique. They are now able to transfer this knowledge into their current assessment of Claymation.

Later that week Paul met and worked with 7JRM Visual Arts in an Evolutionary Dinosaur drawing workshop. Students learnt about the anatomy of the dinosaurs and how to add detail. We thank Paul Rutter for coming and providing this unique experience and opportunity for our students. Jacq Barry

Students work on their claymation assignments, with every small detail of movement and change captured to produce a seamless animation.

Cert 1 Building & Construction

Kadina Memorial School students are fortunate to have an opportunity toward a pathway in the building industry through a Certificate 1 trade course, held every Monday. We have formed a partnership with the Construction Industry and Training Board (CITB) and TAFE SA to deliver the program at school. All students were inducted through a White Card Training day earlier this term.

Additionally, Copper Coast Council and their builders have been generous in their willingness to provide students with regular work experience throughout the year. Pictured above, Max, Brayden and Danni started the day at 7.15am outside the council depot office with Peter Rose from the council.

Above, some demolition work was undertaken on pallets. Some pallets proved easier than others with some timber recycled and others becoming firewood. Angus and Brock make a start on this pallet.

Above, students have started with basic carpentry skills through which they constructed a saw horse. Connor and Kyle with their end product.

A training session with Richard, a representative for KESAB/ Environment Protection Authority, on the importance of a clean work site. Pictured above, Richard, Mr Mac and the students in our Trade Training room at school.

We have had a few weeks whereby ground has been marked out, minor earthworks has taken place, formwork and concrete have been laid. Students apply maths to calculate right angles and check for square.

Exchange student farewell

I never thought that 10 months would go this quickly. I guess the time flies when you have fun. When I heard stories from other exchange students after they returned to Finland, that the exchange was the best experience ever, they always said you can’t understand it unless you had experienced it yourself. I agree with this “best experience ever” sentence 100 per cent. It does not mean that there are no difficult moments or challenges in everyday life, but that you face them in a whole new way. I have learned life lessons that cannot be learned in any other way than as an exchange student.

Australia is very different to my home country Finland. The people, culture, climate, school system. I definitely had a culture shock coming to Australia. However, I know it’s going to be worse going home. People are so warm and welcoming. You are social and enthusiastic about the things you love but at the same time laid back and you know how to enjoy life. I have had the most memorable experiences of my life here in Australia. I now have another family on the other side of the world that I love as my own. Thank you for opening your home to me and taking me into your family. I have made so many friends and met incredible people that have changed me and my perspective of life. There is nothing that I can say or do to show how grateful I am for everything.

When you come from a country that’s covered in spruce and pine forests, the typical animals are rabbits, squirrels, moose and bears, seasons are the other way around and normal winter weather is -20°C, there is a lot to be amazed about for a Finnish person in Australia. Swimming in an ocean without getting cold was quite incredible for me. Seeing kangaroos, koalas and Tassie devils felt like I was in a movie. Experiencing +35°C Christmas was surreal. Having a dance practice in the same heat was pretty exhausting. But I’ve loved it all so much.

I remember my first day at Kadina Memorial School. I was so lost with the school uniforms, diaries and making my own lunch for school. However, I remember thinking that this year is going to be a lot of fun. Through school I met my dearest friends and some of my craziest experiences. My big dream was to learn how to surf and the school gave me an opportunity to learn this skill. I loved the surf camp so much, thank you to everyone who was part of it and made it happen. Another major memory for me is the Sports Day. We don’t have it in Finland, so I was really excited to be part of it. Even in my wildest dreams I could have never dreamed about being the 2019 Open Female champion! I came to have lots of fun and try my best to make Southwood proud. Thank you, Southwood and my peers and teachers, for bearing with me and my questions and helping me around.

Overall, I want to thank everyone for your help, kind gestures and words throughout my year. Thank you for teaching me about your beautiful culture, country and language. All the teachers and staff here at KMS, thank you for all the lessons and conversations we’ve had. I’ve learned much more than just English. I’m going to take these teachings with me knowing I can benefit from them later on in life.

For everyone I want to say, stay true to yourself, keep an open mind and keep on learning. Don’t be afraid of mistakes or the feeling of embarrassment. These are a part of everyone’s lives, and you learn as you go. No one is perfect but that makes us humans. Our quirks make us who we are. Love your roots but discover the world. Go out of your comfort zone. You’ll learn more about the world, but you also learn more about yourself.

A piece of my heart will forever stay in Australia and never leave. I will return to Australia one day and hope to catch up with as many people as possible. Before that, I will miss everyone and everything till that day arrives and carry my experience with me wherever I go. By Janette Back

Athletics Interschool Success

Above, the winning athletics squad. Kadina Memorial School won the Yorke Peninsula Secondary Schools Athletics Carnival, 20.8 points in front of second placed Central Yorke School on Wednesday 27 March. Moonta Area School came third in the YP Country Times Shield, followed by Ardrossan Area School, Minlaton District School, Port Broughton and Yorketown Area Schools. A number of new records were set with Kadina’s Jorja Rogers breaking the Under 14’s 80 metre hurdles with a time of 14.76 seconds. Kadina Memorial placed fifth in the Under 14 pennant, first in the Under 15 pennant, second in the Open and third in team games. Thank you to Head of Health and Physical Education Luke Driver for organising the day, teachers Luke Wood and Lana Kaesler, and captains Lachlan Jones and Montana Briggs. A big thank you to our grounds staff who worked tirelessly providing an oval that is the envy of many. The athletics team competed at the Track and Field Championships at Mile End on Tuesday, with a full report to be published in next term’s newsletter.

NYP Lightning Football Carnival On Monday, April 1, 34 students represented our school in the Northern Yorke Peninsula Lightning Carnival. Two teams played in a high scoring, enthralling 15-a-side competition with several close matches. Brayden Phillips was dominant for KMS1, at one stage kicking six goals in a single 30 minute game; goal sneak, Jhett Price was a useful sidekick, kicking a few back to back goals. KMS2’s Year 7 cohort, Jaykob Paterson, Domenic Bagnato, Charlie Hines, Jackson Window, Mitchell Cunningham and Riley Beech displayed excellent skills and performed well throughout the carnival.

All players in both teams played well and with good spirits with the lightning carnival culminating in a showdown between KMS1 and KMS2. A number of tired and sore participants battled their hearts out in a match between schoolmates. The showdown was contested hotly with everyone trying their best, and KMS1 the eventual winner.

Congratulations to the 12 players who were nominated for the NYP SAPSASA Football Squad, with over a third of the squad being Kadina Memorial School students. Bad luck to the Year 6/7 participants who just missed out and all the best to the current Year 5/6 students who get a chance to nominate next year.

Well done to all students who demonstrated our school values, playing at an excellent level, respecting all umpires/officials and taking the opportunity to participate in such a great day. While many students were worn out after a huge day of football on a warm day, they had great fun and showed great camaraderie.

Thanks to the organisers including Mr Rigby-Meth who works tirelessly for SAPSASA events, all parents/carers for their support, the coaches for organising teams, the Kadina Football Club for hosting and the senior school students whose on field management as umpires was exemplary. Everyone had a great day, with some students already looking forward to next year’s event. Report by Jack Pridham, Max Loveridge, Chris Grantham, Jhett Price and Mr Christopher Cook

Crows Cup Champions April 2 was a bright and sunny day as the Year 5 to 7 girls competed in the Crows Cup at Maitland. The KMS teams were busting to get out on the field. When we got off the bus the field was set with 3 mini ovals to play on. We got into our guernseys and they finally announced the official start to the Inaugural 2019 Crows Cup. Kayleigh May, Tiana Rogers and Cheyenne Ostendorf warmed us up for the first game. The first game was a ripper to watch, with all the girls going out hard and laying some great tackles. The girls were definitely consistent throughout the day with their strong marking, contested ball and goal kicking. Some of the highlights of the day from KMS 2, were Sydney Lockwood’s brave and consistent marks and the fierce tackling from Ella and Miley Bussenschutt. Highlights from KMS 1 were Ebony Lamshed and Meg Day kicking some amazing goals and Charlotte Mercer and Mackenzie Neumann doing some hard tackles. Both KMS teams made it to the finals. KMS 1 versed Minlaton District School for the Cup Win and KMS 2 versed Central Yorke School. Both teams played exceptionally well, in the end KMS 1 took out the win against Minlaton with a score of 56 to 0. Unfortunately the KMS 2 team lost their final and finished in fourth place overall. The girls were super excited that we had won the first ever Crows Cup. After the game Ebony Lamshed received the cup and a signed AFLW Crows football on behalf of the team from Jessica Sedunary who currently plays for the Crows in the AFLW. We couldn’t have done this without the support of our two umpires Tiana Rodgers, Cheyenne Ostendorf and our coaches Kayleigh May, Mrs Morrison and Team Manager Mrs Ritter. Kailee Trott and Emily Flowers

Lightning Netball Carnival On Monday 1 April a group of the Year 6/7’s competed in the Netball Lightning Carnival. We had a fantastic day learning new skills, playing with our friends, making new friends and playing in all sorts of positions. The day wouldn't have been complete without a few wins, with KMS 1's highest win against Moonta scoring 42 goals to 3. KMS 1 and KMS 4 were undefeated on the day, with KMS 2 and KMS 3 only losing to other KMS teams. Of course we couldn't have done it without our awesome coach Miss Baird! I know I had an awesome day and I'm sure all the girls did as well. Report by Mackenzie Neumann, Year 6 KMS 1 (Division 1 Winners)

The KMS 1 team members were Ebony Lamshed, Sophie Franz, Airlie Ramsey, Meg Day, Mackenzie Neumann, Kailee Trott, Imogen Trengove and Georgia McKay. KMS 2 (Division 1 Runner Up) Coaching Division 1 netball for the Lightning Carnival was a really fun experience. We started the day playing Kadina’s other Division 1, which was challenging. We had an excellent game against Port Broughton. By the third game the girls started to gel well together as a team. We played Moonta Area School and won 19 goals to 8. We had another win against Harvest Christian College. Overall it was a fun day and I really enjoyed coaching such a great bunch of girls. Coach Jess Niotis

The KMS 2 division 2 team were: Charlotte Mercer, Grace Neumann, Arabelle Greig, Emily Flowers, Clare Venning, Tessa Paterson, Sadie Polkinghorne, Sydney Lockwood, and Ella Bussenschutt.

KMS 3 (Division 2 Runner Up) I had the privilege of coaching the KMS 3 team at the Lightning Carnival. The girls in my team were a lovely, polite group who enjoyed rotating in a variety of positions. We came second, which was a great achievement and a fun day. Coach Narelle Koch

The KMS 3 team members were: Mia Grillett, Della Krieg, Molly Daniel, Ella Koch, Dayna Green, Grace Schilling, Alycia Lang, Maddison King and Kaitlin Pearce.

KMS 4 (Division 2 Winners) The KMS 4 netball team played amazingly all day. We came out on top, undefeated with 4 wins against Wallaroo, Moonta, Port Broughton and another Kadina Team. I had an awesome day coaching a great bunch of girls who gave it their all and did exactly what I asked straight away. Coach Zara Herbert

The KMS 4 team team members were: Bree Russack, Jemma Hettner, Alice Schultz, Laci Dayman, Lana Elsworthy, Keely Page, Olivia Brook, Ava Mashford and Mia Schmidt. Thank you to SSO Di Boothey, and students Shayla Herbert and Emily Pearce who umpired and the many parents who took turns scoring. Students demonstrated the school values of respect, opportunity and excellence throughout the carnival.

Canteen News Term 2 “NEW YELLOW WINTER MENU” out now! We reduce our salad choices for winter, but have included some yummy winter meals, plus a new daily special on Tuesday and Friday. We have decided to change our small juices by supporting a great South Australian company, Nippy’s. It is a fresh variety, not a long life option, so we think it will be a better choice for our students. Thank you to our students who helped with our taste testing and also approved our new range of juice drinks. We also decided to adopt the Nippy’s fruit box, as the Paradise punch variety is no longer being produced. Both the fruit box and small bottle are 50ml bigger than the previous option. The varieties will stay the same being orange, apple and apple-blackcurrant, with the fruit box also having the tropical variety. The yellow winter menu accompanies today’s newsletter and is also available at the Canteen, Front Office, Daymap, website and Facebook! Qkr will be automatically updated with this menu. Unfortunately there will be some small price rises due to our suppliers increasing theirs. Please encourage your children to pop back to Canteen with their lunch order if something is not quite right. We do our best to make sure all orders are correct. Thank you for your support. We are looking for volunteers in Term 2 to fill a couple of shifts as we are always busy and looking for helpers. Enjoy the holidays and we’ll see you next term! Vicki Hartleib , Canteen Manager

KMSC Pink Day KMSC’s first fundraiser – ‘Wear it PINK day’ – raised a total of $870 on Friday 29 March.

The money will go towards school resources to be decided by KMSC at their meetings.

Thank you to all students and staff who supported the day.

Pictured left, Year 12’s in their pink outfits.

In Term 2 the Middle School KMSC will hold a R-12 Brain Cancer awareness/ fundraiser day on Friday 24 May, when students and staff will be encouraged to wear a beanie or hat to school.
