Welcome to Week 2!
This week we spent time electing our school leaders –
SRC and Sports Captains. We decided to do things a little
differently this year with the Year 7-12 SRC. Students who
were interested in being on SRC were given the
opportunity to write a letter or speak to Mrs Hartwig (who is
coordinating SRC this year) about why they would like to
be on SRC. Well done to the students who have been
proactive in joining SRC and those recognised by their
peers as having positive leadership qualities and elected
to Leadership positions. It is a terrific way to become
involved in Student Voice and further develop their
leadership skills.
The Student Leader Induction will be held next Thursday, February 14th at 9:30 in the Institute. We invite family, friends and community members to join us in celebrating our leaders for 2019.
Congratulations to the following students who are taking on leadership roles this year;

Governing Council The AGM will be held on Wednesday, 20th February (Week 4) at 7:00pm in the school library. The role of Governing Council is critical to the school. It is a great way to learn about the school system and be a part of our site improvement. There will be 6 positions declared vacant this year, however there is scope for another 3 members, with 9 positions in total available. Parents are invited to nominate via the nomination form attached to the newsletter. Please consider how you can contribute to the school’s development and improvement, and come along to hear what goes on. Light refreshments will be provided.
PRINCIPAL’S NEWS School Vision Over the last 18 months, staff have been working on
developing a new school vision statement that embodies our
school values of RESPECT, SUCCESS, LEARNING and
RESPONSIBILITY and describes the goals that we have as a site. Governing council also had the opportunity to contribute
their ideas about what they would like for our school and our
students. After much consultation and feedback, we have
developed the following vision
“A positive and collaborative community of resilient
learners, prepared for the challenges of the future”
This vision will become part of what drives us on a daily basis in all that we do around teaching and learning and we will be spending time working with students about what it means for them. Child Safety Parents/Caregivers and community members please be
advised of the following:
only Authorised vehicles are permitted on school
grounds. Parents/Caregivers vehicles are not authorised
vehicles and are not permitted to enter school grounds. This
is a Work Health and Safety requirement and we would
appreciate your adherence.
anyone parent or visitor/volunteer to classrooms must sign
in at the front office or in the sign in book in the JP area. It is
important that we know who is on site at all times, as part of
our Emergency Management plan.
Newsletter Survey As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, we are undergoing a
revamp of our newsletter. We are looking at things like content
and format, but also the mode and frequency of distribution.
Can you please let us know what you think, by completing the
short survey at the following link. You can also find the link on
our Facebook page.

Communication Matters If you have food, bathers, etc that need to be dropped at
school for your child, or you need to contact them about issues
like after school arrangements etc, please do so via the Front
office, so as minimise disruptions to teaching and learning.
Please do not text or ring your children during class times.
Middle School Trip Our Year 7-9 students are off to Port Lincoln today with their teachers as part of a focus on wellbeing. We’ll update you with some photos and a run down of what they got up to in next weeks newsletter.

Catch up with a Cowell Kid
This week, seeing as it is the first week back, I decided to catch
up with some of our newest students from the R/1 class. On
Monday I was joined by Skylar, Knox, Ezra and Lewis who
enjoyed their first visit to my office complete with hot chocolate
and teddy bear biscuits.
We started our chat by talking about what has been the best
thing about school so far this year and each response was very
different. Knox has loved reading books, Ezra has really enjoyed
drawing (particularly rainbows and houses), Skylar likes writing
because she gets to learn how to hold a pencil and Lewis
thought getting marbles (which the students collect for positive
behaviour) was a good idea.
Next I asked the students what they would like to do when they
get bigger and they had some very definite ideas about their
goals. Lewis would like to look after animals; dogs are his
favourite animals, Skylar would like to be a horse rider because
she has been on a horse and ‘loves’ them, Knox would like to
drive a boat and catch fish and crabs, and Ezra would like to be a
Vet because they help animals.
Now that they have had a week at school, I asked the students
what they would like to learn about. Skylar is keen to learn about
Lego stuff because she loves Lego and wants to ‘build, build,
build’ all day, Lewis would like to learn about wrapping presents
and making toys to put in the presents, Ezra is keen to learn
about numbers because she doesn’t know how many she needs
to count and Knox would like to learn more about drawing.
Lastly, I asked them about the things that they are good at – Ezra
was very proud of that fact that she could click her fingers really
well (which her nanny taught her), Lewis is good at driving his
remote control racing car and can even turn it, Knox is good at
swimming along the pool and Skylar is good at jumping off of the
boat into deep water!
It was very entertaining catching up with our youngest students –
their enthusiasm and energy was infectious. I look forward to
catching up next week with some of our Year 1/2 students.

Music News
I have had the privilege of teaching music to students at Cowell Area School for the last 6 months of 2018 and would like to expand in 2019. I will be teaching at the school on Wednesdays as a private provider.
The instruments I will be offering are voice, piano, flute and recorder (yes, eye roll – but it is a starting base for a lot of woodwind instruments!). If there are other instruments students are keen to learn, so am I. Adults are also welcome!
The cost is $29 for one person lesson $19 for a two person lesson $10 if I can get 3 or more for recorder lessons
Parents are responsible for supplying the books (I will give more details later).
Any inquiries, please message me on 0417288310 or email me on [email protected]
I would also like to send out a huge congratulations to Taye Chase and Drew Tonkin for earning high honours in their ANZCA piano exams last year – well done and well deserved!
Thank you, I look forward to working with music students in 2019! Bronwyn Smith
STUDENT MEDICATION
Medication should only be sent to school if
absolutely necessary. Medication that has to be taken 3 times per day can be taken before and
after school, and before bedtime.
If sending medication to school it must be delivered in the original container, with the label
from the pharmacy. You can ask your
pharmacist for a second, labelled container to keep the extra medication at home.
This must also be accompanied with a Medication Authority, completed by the parent/caregiver giving staff consent to
administer the medication.
Medication must be handed in to staff at the front office at the start of the day for
administering.
Any queries about this please feel free to contact Kylie McFarlane at the school.
EFTPOS / DIRECT DEBIT EFTPOS facilities are available for paying all
school related accounts.
A direct debit by instalment facility is also
available to parents who would like fees
deducted directly from their bank, credit or
debit card on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly
basis. For more details please see Jacqui Lewis-
Couzner in the front office, or call the school on
86292150.
SCHOOL BANKING
Learning to save for the future or for that something
special is a valuable lesson for all children.
Cowell Area School along with Bank SA recognises the
importance of regular saving and how your child can
benefit from watching their savings grow.
Student banking occurs every WEDNESDAY, where
students can bring their bank books with their money
(deposit slips must be completed by the student/
parent) and a member of staff will take them to the
bank for processing.
If your child does not have an existing account with
BankSA and would like to participate in School Banking,
please visit the friendly staff at the local Cowell Branch
to arrange a new account.
SCHOOL NEWS COMMUNITY NEWS
Help a young person you know follow their dreams with a $6,000 scholarship!
NOMINATIONS OPEN NOW
Youth Off The Streets is a non-denominational community organisation working for young people who are facing many different challenges. We provide a range of services to support these young people as they work to improve their lives and have a brighter future.
It is our belief that education is the key to breaking the cycle of disadvantage and poverty that traps so many of the young people we work with. Our National Scholarship Program is a way in which we offer young people in Australia an opportunity to achieve their best.
National Scholarship Program
The National Scholarship Program celebrates the talents and strengths of young people in Australia who exhibit promise but lack the personal support networks and resources that will allow them to fulfil their potential.
Every year over 20 young people throughout Australia are awarded scholarships valued at $6,000 to pursue further education or training so they may realise their potential for a positive future. In addition each recipient receives a community mentor and dedicated staff support for the two year program, as well as the chance to visit Sydney to attend a special award ceremony in October 2018 to be formally acknowledged of their achievement.
Who can be nominated?
Nominations are invited from any young person in Australia who is aged 16 to 21 inclusive with genuine talent, ability and/or determination in any education or training course, including (but not limited to): academic skills; visual or performing arts; sport; trade skills; and music. Further details surrounding eligibility criteria can be found on our website.
Nominations must be made by the young person
themselves; however assistance in completing the
nomination is encouraged and is your opportunity to
help a young person follow their dreams.
Please visit www.youthoffthestreets.com.au/programs/scholarship for further information, read the Nomination Guidelines & Conditions and complete a 2019 National Scholarship Program Nomination Form.
Nominations close on Friday, 12 April 2019 at 4:00pm. No
late applications will be accepted.
We ask that you please forward this email to your
relevant networks, as well as download and display this
poster, to ensure all eligible young people have a chance
to apply for this great opportunity. For further information please contact the scholarships team at [email protected] or phone (02) 9330 3537. Kind regards,
