DRAFT SPEECH FOR PRINCIPAL
Good Morning every one...
It is with great pleasure that I address you today during this 5th International AMSUN
Conference. May I welcome our Guests from other Universities within and without our
borders; feel at home. Let me congratulate the AMSUN team that organised this
conference for this noble effort. Well done.
Disease Diagnosis under low resource setting is a very touching theme especially in
this era when our Country is going through devolution. Doctors will be key agents in
putting up devolved systems in healthcare and as such understanding start ups,
which are characterised by little resources is an important tool to all of us. We mustbrace ourselves for tough times ahead as health care professionals since the
allocative theory in Health Economics is not always well applied by our policy makers.
As such, we must learn to cope under the current trend of few fixed resources and the
ballooning needs in health care. It is an important call to all of us to learn and apply
how to work with meek resources and serve as many patients as possible.
All of us are aware that non communicable diseases are the lead cause of death in
many parts of the world, and Africa is the next stop. Governments and health
agencies world over have mastered and controlled infectious diseases, the focus isnow on non communicable diseases. Africa has a double burden; we have not yet
controlled infectious diseases and now we have to combat the rising mortality and
morbidity from Non communicable diseases. This efforts start at levels such as this.
So as you participate and listen in to the conference discussions, remember you are
here on behalf of the many Africans who are staring at two problems with little
resources to tackle them. Therefore, yours here is not only noble as per by the
profession, but divine and humane as per by God and nature.
I am certain the moderators of the conference abstract presentations are well versed
in these subjects and how they interrelate. Interact with them with scientific curiosityand apprenticeship keenness. All of us here are scientists, and as such it is time to
sharpen your skills with knowledge and enrich your art with experience from the
moderators.
The world is moving fast and only the swift can keep up. I challenge all of us to be
swift in our learning and execution so that we can keep up. The University of Nairobi
provides vast opportunities to the students and I am delighted to note that Medical
students grab a good majority of them through such events as this. Keep on with
these inspiring activities that move our country to a universal stage.
Thank you all for attending this conference and I am certain that you are going to
learn and later on participate effectively in nation building. To our guests, once more
