Principal’s chat
Last week I met with the organiser of our Japanese
Cultural visit and he let me know that this year we
have over 80 students visiting, one of the biggest
years yet, and because of this they are in desperate
need of host families. So far we have had only one
family put their hand up to host and I would like to
encourage more families in our community to
volunteer to host a couple of students whilst they are
here.
It is a great experience and the students will only be
with families for four nights. The Japanese students
arrive on Wednesday 2nd August and fly out on Sunday 6th August. During
their time here they take part in a range of activities, including a day at
Maldon on the Friday. All families who have hosted in the past have said
that it was a great experience for their family and the Japanese students. If
you are thinking about hosting please come in and have a chat and collect an
expression of interest form to fill in. Anyone can be a host family, even
families with children in the lower grades.
This Friday we have a special fundraiser for the Heart Kids Foundation. The
fundraiser was suggested and organised by one of the students and his
family. This student had problems with his heart as a baby and has ongoing
treatment for his condition. On Friday everyone is encouraged to dress as a
superhero and bring a gold coin donation. All proceeds from Friday
Fundraiser will also be donated.
Tomorrow is our School Open Day. Between 9.30am – 11.00am we will
have school tours for new and prospective parents.
Just a reminder that we have free eye testing available for all students on
Wednesday. If you would like your child to have a free eye check then
please ensure that your form is returned by 9am on Wednesday.

Community
This is an invitation for students to participate in the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal on May 27th and 28th
2017. Our annual Red Shield Appeal raises money for vital community services such as emergency
accommodation and financial support for families affected by floods and fires, drug and alcohol
rehabilitation programs and food and other support, for those in need in the Castlemaine area.
As young people learn about social justice issues they often want to do something, they want to make a
difference. Participating in the Red Shield Appeal is a fantastic opportunity for students to feel this is
possible. Furthermore, students that participate will strengthen valuable skills such as interpersonal
communication, organisation and time management skills, and its heaps of fun!
How can we help?
The Red Shield Appeal runs for the month of May, with the main appeal happening on May 27th and 28th.
Students can participate by doorknocking in their local area for two to three hours. Alternatively, or in
addition, they can organise their own fundraising event such as a Red day where everyone wears red to
school and brings a gold coin donation. Ultimately through your efforts, you will be assisting many people in
need in their community by fundraising for The Salvation Army. It’s a way of the community helping the
community.
Schools that participate and all students who volunteer their time will receive a Certificate of Appreciation.
It’s a fantastic way to empower young people and to make a genuine difference in the lives of disadvantaged
Australians.
