PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Welcome back after the Easter break. I have heard many enjoyable stories from students about their camping and family activities. I hope you all had a pleasant time and are now ready to work hard for the next two weeks to finish the term.
Next Wednesday is the Riverland Interschool Athletics Carnival. This is a major sporting event and is recognised as one of the leading regional carnivals in the state. We wish all our students the very best and I am sure they will give their best efforts and represent the school well. Our HPE Coordinator, Mr Valentine has outlined specific details for the day later in the newsletter. Next Friday, four of our students are flying to Spain. Tahlia Cabot, Caitlin Curtis, Kayla Mason and Stuart McClelland are currently studying Spanish via Open Access. They will be touring Spain, learning more about its history, culture and most importantly, speaking the language. We wish them all the best. Throughout the last week, teachers have been having discussions with students and parents about their progress from the traffic light data collected. For each student, teachers allocate a green for ‘all going well’, yellow for ‘some concern’ and red if ‘there is a problem’. We encourage students to use this feedback and if necessary, improve in the required areas. Reports will be published at the end of term to continue monitoring progress.
Finally as in our previous newsletters I want to recognise and congratulate a group of students who have excelled in the broader community. They have followed their passion and achieved outstanding performances. Dillon Gollan has been selected in the 2016 Under 15 and B-grade Riverland Baseball League Team of the Year. Dillon has also been selected in the Under 15 State Indigenous Football Team to play in Townsville from the 3rd - 9th April. Adam Weir has been selected in the Riverland Baseball League B-grade Team of the Year. Adam was a member of the Waikerie Premiership winning softball team and was named Best on Ground, Adam won the 2016 Riverland Softball League Most Valuable Player Award. Zeus Camilleri-Baker was selected in the 2016 Riverland Junior Baseball League team of the Year and won the Junior Rookie of the Year Award.

RIVERLAND INTERSCHOOL SPORTS DAY 2016 WAIKERIE ATHLETICS FIELD
WEDNESDAY 6TH APRIL
Waikerie High School will host Glossop High School, Loxton High School and Renmark High School in the Riverland Secondary Schools Sports Association Sports Day to be held at the Waikerie Athletics Field.
Waikerie High School expects all students to either compete, volunteer or spectate during the day. The majority of teaching staff will be present at the sports day to manage, supervise and run events.
Non-Competitors Non-competitors are strongly encouraged to attend the day to support their fellow students. If, for good reason, your child is not able to attend then there will be a staff member present at school to supervise individual study.
All students need to sign in at the Waikerie Athletics Field by 8:40am at the Waikerie marquee.
Non-competitors will follow uniform policy as per usual. Students not in WHS uniform items will be sent up to the school.
Competitors All students in track and field events are encouraged to participate in the teams warm up at 8:30am. Volunteers are also expected to meet at 8:30am or as soon as the school bus run arrives.
A successful team must look like a team!
Track and Field competitors must compete in athletics singlet available from the library. Track suits are also available from the library.
All Ball Games competitors must compete in the green PE uniform top.
All competitors are expected to wear the black sports shorts available from the uniform shop.
I look forward to another successful day at the Riverland Interschool Sports Day, the strongest zone competition in the state. We won the most improved shield last year and the U16 Boys pennant. I expect a better result on home soil and hopefully we can win two or more age group pennants. Most of all, I wish all students an enjoyable day and hope they compete to the best of their ability.
Phil Valentine HPE & Sports Coordinator
HAT TRICK FOR RITCHIE
The Ritchie house has won the Sports Day shield for the third consecutive year with a 21 point win over King. Ritchie were also winners of the Athletics shield, the Ball Games shield was shared between King and Cadell, and Randell were the Tug War Champions.
The standard of competition was strong and I was pleased to see students perform well on the day. The weather was not ideal with strong winds making it tough on the finishing straight. Some students went above and beyond expectations, competing in events out of their age groups to earn points for their house.
Two records were broken on the day. Rachel Fillmore gaining 9.60m in the U16 female Shotput and Connie Griffiths throwing 27.32m in the female U15 female Javelin.
I would like to thank the students for their participation and volunteer work, in particular the House Captains and their helpers for organising the teams. Thank you to all parents and ex-students that volunteered on the day, the Recreation Centre, the Council for their excellent facilities, Marion Maywald and helpers for the canteen, and Waikerie Little Athletics for the use of their equipment.
Students will continue to train in preparation for Interschool Athletics at Waikerie on Wednesday April 6th. We look forward to continuing our improved performances at the strongest regional schools athletics carnival in the state.
