Principal Report

Dear Parents, Guardians and Friends,

It’s difficult to believe that yet another term has passed by. Although it has been a short term it has been a very productive one. Many exciting events have taken place in a very short time. Meet and Greet

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the families and staff who attended the Meet and Greet even-ing. It was a huge success and the positive feedback from all involved is reassuring. Please visit our Face Book page to access photographs and videos taken on the night.

School Council Elections We have recently formed the Truganina South Primary School Council for the 2016 School Year.

Congratulations to the following parents on their election to our School Council:

Thank you to the outgoing School Council, Craig Jobson and Nick Alderson for their commitment to our School Council over the past two years.

Annual Report to School Community The AGM will be scheduled to be delivered before our April School Council Meeting. -April 27th 2016

-6:00 PM -Truganina South Primary School. The Annual Report will be presented at the AGM.

Emergency Evacuation Drill

We recently had a whole school emergency evacuation drill, we practiced being evacuated off site. I am very pleased to report that the entire school was evacuated very efficiently and all staff and students cooperated and

followed the instructions of our area wardens and other officials in charge. We do hope that we never have to use our emergency evacuation plan for a real emergency, but by practicing procedures during a drill we will all

be better prepared if there was a need put our plan in place during an emergency situation.

Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund Parents are reminded that if you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent,

you may be eligible for the CSEF. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child.

The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund helps ensure that no student misses out on the opportunity to join their classmates for important, educational and fun activities. It is part of making Victoria the Education State and the Government's commitment to breaking the link be-tween a student's background and

their achievements. The annual CSEF amount per student is: $125 for primary school students, $225 for secondary school students

How to Apply: Contact the school office to obtain a CSEF application form or download from the CSEF web-site. Applications close 3 June 2016.

I hope you all enjoy the Easter Break. Happy Easter.

Meet and Greet Our Meet and Greet was a very successful event! It was great to see so many families at the event. The positive feedback from families has been greatly appreciated. It was a great opportunity for families to

speak with staff informally and just get to know each other. The night also provided parents an oppor-tunity to network with other families in our school community. The band “The Locals” got people up dancing and enjoying the festivities.

The night was also a great opportunity for our growing choir to perform, as well as our students sharing their hidden talents with their dancing! Overall I think it was a very successful event and look forward to the next one!

Enrolments We are currently taking enrolments for 2017. Please try and get your 2017 enrolments in as soon as pos-

sible. Our network has very strict enrolment protocols, so please refer to the designated neighbourhood area map on our website. School tours have already started, with the first being on the 9th March. We had a large amount of families on our tours. We will be running another tour on the 10th August at

12pm and 5pm. Student Leadership

Our school captains were very fortunate to attend a leadership day organised by one of our local mem-

bers of parliament, Joanne Ryan MP. The day allowed our students to work with others to problem solve

issues and work on their leadership skills. The students will now use these skills to run the TSPS student

leadership team for the remainder of the year.

The Student Leadership did an amazing job organising events for the ‘Meet and Greet’. They sold raffle

tickets, organised colouring in competitions and a ‘Guess how many jelly beans in the jar” competition.

The students also provided school tours for families. They all did an amazing job and should be proud of

their efforts so far in this very important role.

School Holiday learning fun!

Asking your child to keep a journal or diary is a great way of recording holiday memories and filling in those long afternoons. This can be done on paper or their iPad. Don’t forget to keep items

like movie tickets, photos etc for children to place in their writers notebook as seeds for when they return to school in term 1.

Students will also be able to use all their online programs to practise their skills in reading and maths. Students can be using Mathletics, Literacy Planet, Reading Eggs or Reading Eggspress and Raz Kids.

There are also lots of free activities at Wyndham Libraries these holidays that are great learning experi-ences too. Please follow the link for more information http://www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/libraries/kids

NAPLAN Our students in Years 3 and 5 will be participating in NAPLAN next term. NAPLAN is an national assess-

ment for all children in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. NAPLAN is not a test that children can prepare for in the same way they might prepare for an end of term test. NAPLAN tests skills that develop and improve over time. These are skills that should be contin-

uously developed throughout the year and not just in the lead-up to NAPLAN. Below is a link to Australian education resources that are tailored specifically to parents looking for infor-mation and support on literacy and numeracy development in children. http://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/parent-carer-support/preparing-for-naplan.html

Message from the Sick Bay

Friendly Reminders:

Please ensure all uniform (especially hats and jackets), lunch boxes and drink bottles are clearly labelled with your child’s name.

It is a good idea for all Foundation students, and any others who are prone to “accidents” to have a change of clothes in their bags. We cannot guarantee to have a change of clothes to fit your child.

Information/ideas for helping kids with maths at home!

Tips for parents to help kids understand Quantity in Number:

Count stairs, letter boxes, trucks etc as opportunities arise.

Put out the number of knives needed for dinner and ask your child to get the same number of forks and spoons.

Ask your child to get everyone a cup for afternoon tea.

Ask questions like “If Grandma comes to stay for the weekend, how many people will there be?” “If Daddy leaves the table, how many people will there be?”

Talk about numbers as they play e.g. the number of blocks they are using to build their tower or the number of wheels on their car.

Read stories that have a number focus e.g. The Three Billy Goats Gruff.

from: www.backtofrontmaths.com.au

Want to build maths into your everyday life? Try these really simple ideas and games:

Ask the kids to get numbers of items in the shop (e.g. 8 apples)

Make “cool high fives” by using some fingers on each hand (e.g. 3 on one hand and 2 on the

other). Repeat with other numbers bigger than 5. Cut bread in half in different ways and decide that no matter what shape it is, both halves are

the same. Give all the toast for the whole family cut into halves on the one plate (or apples, or other

fruit). Ask how many pieces of bread or fruit you started with.

Play “what am I spying?” instead of “I spy”: Describe a 3D object that you can see, one clue

at a time, while the other people try to guess what it is. (e.g. My object is bigger than the TV. It has smooth sides that are rectangles. It is white. It has two doors on it. It is very cold.)

Look at maps of where you are going and let the kids try to follow the map while you get

there. Find your street on a map. When another family is coming to dinner ask the kids how many people there will be. So how

many pieces of broccoli will we need if everyone has two?

Work out how many pieces of pizza you need for your family and how many pizzas that would

be. Talk about how likely things are to happen (e.g. it is very likely to rain tomorrow so we had

better pack your rain coat). Consider things that are totally made up in their games or that they see on TV too – how likely is it that the dinosaur bones that David Attenborough was just looking at actually came to life and walked around the museum?

Get them to budget their pocket money (e.g. have a money box with four categories: spend-

ing, saving, charity and gifts). Work out how many weeks it would be before they could buy a certain toy.

Get the kids to work out how many minutes it is until something happens (e.g. how long until

your swimming lesson?). Both digital and analogue clocks are great for this. from www.backtofrontmaths.com.au

Managing your Waste at Home!

Responsible waste management begins long before we throw our waste into the bin – it begins when we decide we need or want to purchase something.

Everything we purchase has some element of waste to it. We can control the degree to which this has an impact on our environment by:

Recycling – Use your Recycling Bin and Green Waste Bin correctly for maximum re-source recovery.

Reuse – Reuse calico or green bags when you go shopping.

Avoidance – Avoid buying new things, borrow from friends and family.

Get It Right On Bin Night!

Wyndham City is encouraging residents to make their efforts to recycle count, by getting it right on

bin night. In partnership with the Victorian Government and other Melbourne councils, the Get it Right on Bin Night campaign aims to improve recycling rates across the metropolitan area by

providing residents with tips and information to make recycling easier and less confusing. Every week 300,000 wheelie bins full of items that could have been put in the recycling bin

make their way from Melbourne’s households into landfill. In Wyndham, 14 per cent of our gar-bage stream is made up of items that could be recycled.

One of the key reasons why recyclable items end up in landfill is because people are confused about what can and can’t be recycled. Recycling processes and systems have evolved and there are

now many more items that can be recycled than ever before.Wyndham residents will soon be receiving their new recycling calendars which will provide a reminder on which night recycling

and green waste bins are to go out. Wyndham’s website also features many great hints on how to recycle and reuse things you no longer want or need, including a recycling directory and ways to reduce waste in the home.

Check for recycling in every room: Many items in your kitchen, bathroom, laundry, lounge and study can go in your recycling bin.

Make sure items are empty: Items don’t need to be sparkling clean, just empty. Remove solid food scraps like pizza and leftovers.

Keep recycling out of plastic bags: Remember, if you put your recycling in plastic bags it can end up in landfill because it can’t be sorted and recycled.

Make recycling easy: Placing separate rubbish and recycling bins in each room of your house helps make recycling easy. If you don’t have enough room for two bins, why not try a small box or container under the bench or in a cupboard to collect recycling.
