MESSAGE FROM THE VICE-PRINCIPAL Dear Families and Community Members: It is hard to believe that June has arrived. What an incredible year it has been. Exciting events have been occurring at Thornlea. Last week we had Prom and it was a magical evening for all involved. There was delicious food, music, dancing and laughter. The next milestone for our grade 12s is Graduation, which takes place on June 25th. Sports teams have been wrapping up their seasons. The Ultimate Frisbee team, a co-ed team, epitomizes the Thornlea by having earned perfect spirit scores in every one of their games. We encourage all of our students to buckle down over the remaining seven days of classes in order to complete culminating activities for their courses and also to prepare for exams, which are scheduled from June 17-23. At home, it is helpful if over the next few weeks you can keep the distractions to a minimum and ensure that your students have a quiet place to work on their final assign-ments and studying. Finally, on a personal note, this is the last e-bulletin I will write as a Vice Princi-pal at Thornlea as I am moving to Dr. Denison in the fall. I have enjoyed every minute of my time here with your amazing children. I am blessed to have had three years here with this vibrant community. I wish everyone continued suc-cess.

Warmest Regards,

Janet Atkinson

Memo To: Students and Families

From: Joe Foti, Janet Atkinson, Kim Tavares

Date: May 6, 2015

Thornlea students will write their semester examinations at the end of June. Our exam schedule is on the back of this page. All exams are written at 10:00 a.m. from Wednes-day, June 17 to Tuesday, June 23, 2015. Please review the examination rules below, and determine the days on which your examinations are scheduled.

York Region District School Board Examination Rules

Examination Schedule: All students must write their examinations at the scheduled time. Vacation, employ-ment and/or appointments must not be scheduled during the examination pe-riod. Students must be available throughout the exam schedule in the unfore-seen event that any exams need to be rescheduled. It is the responsibility of each student to confirm the scheduled examination time, date, and location. If a student has a valid medical certificate detailing why he/she was unable to write the final examination on the assigned day, the school’s administration will deal with the situation on a case by case basis. Should any exam day be cancelled, all evaluations of that day will be re-scheduled during the exam period. In such an event, check the website to learn when postponed exams will be written. On the day of the examination: 1. Bring any remaining course textbooks to your examination to return to your teacher. 2. Arrive at the assigned examination room by 9:50 a.m. Leave all books, pencil cases, geometry set cases, carrying cases or covers for calcu-lators, I-pods, MP3 Players, cell phones, jackets or bags in your locker or at home as they are not allowed in the evaluation room. The exception is textbooks to be returned to the teacher which should be placed on the floor beside your desk and specific de-vices that a teacher has instructed you to bring beyond the pen, pencil and eraser nor-mally required.

Welcome to Hollywood Thornlea! We have had an incredible semester here at Thornlea studying, writing, filming, analysing and advertising films. The Grade 11 English students of Ms. Swailes, Mr. Hutchison and Ms. Stein each chose a classic film to analyse and present as part of their Culminating Unit. The English Creative Writing class of Mr. Capilongo wrote five to ten minute screen-plays that they then pitched to the Communication Technology class. Mr. McConnell’s Communication Technology class choose 3-5 of the films to film and produce. Ms. Lerman’s art class also designed and cre-ated eye-catching posters for all thirty films. As well, this April we held our first Thornlea Student Film Festival to showcase all the past won-derful films. Next year, Thornlea will be offering a Media Studies course taught by Mr. Burman. So stay tuned for more, from our amazingly tal-ented students.

New English Classroom Murals There are wonderful new English Classroom Murals in rooms 237 and 235! Mr. Stephen Hutchison decided that he wanted to brighten up his classroom and have murals painted of one of his favourite writers, Edgar Allan Poe. Mr. Domenico Capilongo was inspired too and decided to go with William Shake-speare. Both murals have a painting of the writer and a copy of their actual sig-nature. The writers are surrounded by images and quotations from some of their most famous works. You are all welcome to come and enjoy the murals. These wonderful pieces were painted by one of our most talented and hard working grade 10 students, Nadia Damirchi. Nadia will be pursuing art in the fu-ture and next year will be doing a Co-op placement in graphic design.
