These deeds are revealed in the Bible and confessed in the Ecumenical Creeds and The Lutheran Confessions. Many churches today, however, don’t confess any of the historic Ecumenical (Apostles’, Nicene, and Athanasian) Creeds. Why? Because various church bodies after the Reformation, seeking to emphasize God’s Word over all, became vehemently anti- creedal, inspiring popular mottos like “No creed but the Bible!” and “Deeds, not creeds!” that endure to this day. Creeds are as old as the Bible The Ecumenical creeds are confessions of faith from the teaching of Holy Scripture alone that point us to Christ and His redemption. They are not man-made teachings as some people think. Martin Luther said, “To state it quite briefly, the (Apostles’) Creed teaches us to know (Christ) fully (Ephesians 3:19)” (LCII, I). Jesus asked Peter to confess a creed. Peter confessed, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matt. 16:16). Jesus said to His disciples prior to their mission work, “So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven” (Matt. 10:32). No creed but the Bible. But why do we need any other creeds beyond the Bible? Because the Bible doesn’t actually answer the question of what a particular person or church body exactly believes about the Bible. When many Christian churches confessing sola Scriptura disagree on what the Bible teaches, the slogan “no creed but the Bible “ is too vague and not helpful. If churches held to this slogan and had no creeds or confessions of faith, it would leave us wondering what they really believe. That would make true unity and fellowship difficult, if not impossible. We live in a day and age in which many churches have exchanged the historic Ecumenical Creeds for “What We Believe” pages on their websites. Every church today has creeds and confessions of faith, even if they deny it. Despite how unpopular the formal creeds of Christianity have become, many have formulated their own contemporary mottos, slogans, catch phrases and “about” statements that have in essence become their creeds. In this hashtag, Instagram and tweet-filled social media world, it’s not uncommon for Christians to confess their slogan-based creeds on their status updates—#thiswebelieve. Deeds, not creeds People today who confess “deeds not creeds” are also known to confess the anti-creedal creed “doctrine divides.” They believe their church must focus more on what unifies them, namely the deeds or works of doing more good, loving one another and reaching out with the love of Christ. How can we reach out with the love of Christ, though, if we have no creeds or confessions of faith to share with them? We can’t forsake the creeds and confessions of the Christian faith for the sake of doing good deeds. The Bible, creeds and deeds We are all saved from our sins by the good deeds of Jesus. These deeds are revealed in the Bible and confessed in the Ecumenical Creeds and the Lutheran Confessions. The Lord’s righteous deeds to save sinners led Christians to confess the creeds, which further leads them to do good deeds toward others. Faith first receives what God gives by grace alone in Christ and then acts as the Holy Spirit leads. “Let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth” (1 John 3:18). Our deeds always follow the clear teaching of the Bible and the Church’s creeds. They are always fruits of our faith in Christ. Our faith will always lead us to serve and love our neighbor. Creedal misconceptions lead to slogans and mottos that, despite their good intentions by many Christians, only confuse people. All Christians believe, teach and confess some type of creed. Prince of Peace News

An article by Jonathan Heuhn, The Lutheran Witness, September 2017

We are all saved from our sins by the good deeds of Jesus. These deeds are revealed in the Bible and confessed in the Ecumenical Creeds and The Lutheran Confessions. Many churches today, however, don’t confess any of the historic Ecumenical (Apostles’, Nicene, and Athanasian) Creeds. Why? Because various church bodies after the Reformation, seeking to emphasize God’s Word over all, became vehemently anti-creedal, inspiring popular mottos like “No creed but the Bible!” and “Deeds, not creeds!” that endure to this day.

We live in a day and age in which many churches have exchanged the historic Ecumenical Creeds for “What We Believe”

College care campaign

this month Prince of Peace LOVES our college stu-dents, and each October and April, we try to show our support and prayers by providing a care mailing. During the month of October, we will again collect “Scholar Dollars.” Scholar Dollars will be used to purchase gift cards for each of our 12 students. Look for the Scholar Dollar col-lection jar on the counter in the narthex for the first three weekends in October. If each person puts one dollar in the jar each of the three weekends, we could potentially have $400 to purchase gift cards by the end of the campaign. This would allow us to give each student 3 $10 gift cards to his/her favorite eatery, store, and/or coffee shop. Most importantly, please take a moment to sign each card that will also be on the counter. The kids appreciate and love your notes of en-couragement as much as the “stuff.”

“Celebrating the Reformation” concert

with the Columbus Philharmonic

Saturday, October 28 at 7:30 p.m.

The Reformation had a profound impact on many things in life, including music. The Columbus Philharmonic Orchestra will celebrate the 500th Anniversary of this historic event with a massive festival chorus singing of JS Bach and Vaughan Williams. A dramatic choral-orchestral setting by Dan Forrest of A Mighty Fortress and Mendelssohn’s great masterpiece, his Reformation Symphony, completes the experience. Mem-bers of our own Prince of Peace choir will take part as well as other congregations of the Columbus Circuit. The concert will take place at Erne Auditorium at Columbus North High School, 1400 25th St., Columbus, 47201. Tickets range in price from $5 to $50 and may be obtained by calling the box office at 812-376-2638. For info, visit www.thecip.org.

BETHLEHAM WALK . . . THEY FOLLOWED the STAR . . . The Wise Men have begun their trek to Bethlehem and they are in need of supplies. A “Go Fund Me” account has been established to assist them on their way; approximately $1,650.00 will cov-er the cost of the trip. Money will be needed to pay the Oa-sis water tax, food and snacks to eat on the long journey, and a “GPS” for cloudy days and nights when the star is not visible. Beginning September 30th envelopes can be found attached to a banner in the narthex indicating various amounts and how the monies will be used. The amount col-lected will assure our Christmas Gift to the community will be well staffed and beautifully presented. Be a part of this journey as the Wise Men make their way to Bethlehem.

TRUNK OR TREAT OCTOBER 29 Join us on Sunday, October 29 at 5:00 p.m. for our annual Trunk or Treat event! How can you help? You can host a trunk that evening by deco-rating the trunk of your car and handing out treats. You can assist with greeting guests, parking “host” vehicles, and/or running games, crafts, or snacks. This is a community outreach event, so we hope to have many of our members present! (Thank

you to the many people who signed up to help at the recent Mission & Minis-try Fair!) If you would like to donate candy or other Christ-centered prizes for our event, there will be a tub in the narthex. Trunk or Treat is a great way to teach those attending about the significance of the Reformation. Invite your family, friends, and neighbors. Dress in a friendly costume, decorate your vehicle in a friendly way, bring something to hand out, and we will see you there! Thank you to Thrivent Financial for sponsoring our event.

Sunday school offerings to benefit Lutheran Heritage Foundation Our Sunday school offerings will be sent to the Lutheran Heritage Foundation. Each $5 that we donate gives a child his or her own Bible storybook or catechism. To date, LHF has translated Lu-ther’s Small Catechism into more than 80 languages and A Child’s Garden of Bible Stories into dozens more. Thank you for supporting this important ministry!

Thank you! Sincere thanks goes to Janet Kath, Debbie Crist, Barb Gray, Paula Yocum, Doris Petersen, and Chris DeVincent for helping out in the office during Beth Wallis’s recovery. Your help is greatly appreciated!

Stay tuned to see if we have any postcards returned. Special thanks to our Fellowship Committee for serving ice cream and all who helped organized this tradition-al event! Below are some highlights from our Sunday school classes.

During the month of September we met and talked with two missionaries to learn more of how God’s word is spread to other places in the world. Deaconess Kim Bueltmann visited us on September 24 and our younger clas-ses were able to Skype with missionary Michael Ersland serving in Ghana.

We have a Facebook page! Please find Prince of Peace LCMS Sunday School and like our page!

Our children in grades preschool through grade five will be singing during Reformation worship on Sunday, Octo-

ber 29.

Our grades 6-12 class is immersed in an in-depth study of the life of Martin Luther. Additionally, we will examine the impact the Reformation had in 1517 and continues to have in 2017.

Please keep our Sunday school teachers in your prayers as we continue in the study of God’s Word!

Bible transcribe challenge continues In 1521, Martin Luther began translating the New Testa-ment from Greek into German while living incognito at Wartburg. It took him only eleven weeks to complete this task. On October 29, we will celebrate the 500

th anniver-

sary of the Reformation. In honor of Martin Luther’s ac-complishment, our adult Sunday school class will attempt to transcribe the Gospel of John and our children’s and youth classes will attempt to transcribe the Book of Ro-mans by Reformation Sunday. Watch the November news-letter to see if we accomplished our task!

Special Reformation book available You have the opportunity to pre-order The Reformation, a beautifully designed coffee-table style book in which you will learn about those who took part in the complex chain of events that shook church and state to their very foun-dations. There is a sample copy for you to examine and an order form on the counter in the narthex. The book, regularly priced at $29.99, will be offered for only $22.49 if ordered before October 16.

“Unless I am convinced by the testimony of the Scriptures or by clear reason (for I do not trust either in the pope or in councils alone, since it is well known they have often erred and contradicted themselves), I am bound by the Scriptures I have quoted and my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and I will not retract anything, since it is neither safe nor right to go against conscience. I cannot do otherwise, here I stand, may God help me. Amen.” - Martin Luther
