LATI Program Proposal Robert Thomas PGCMLS Program Title: Got a New Smart Device? We have Apps for You @ Greenbelt Branch Library Program Date: TBD (after winter holiday season) Program Budget: $0 (Existing resources and materials to be used along with Information and volunteer staff.) Need for Program: PGCMLS has determined from past experience that customers will be coming into the branches after the holiday season with new “smart” devices and lots of questions. Our Digital Services group is currently in the process of pulling together online tutorials and guides for staff members to use when advising customers about the various services available through our Online Library. In addition, each branch will be receiving posters and promotional materials later this month for related displays. The Greenbelt Branch, like the other branches that comprise the North Area of PGCMLS, has many customers that are self-sufficient; they use our self-checkout and catalog computers independently. Some own smartphones and tablets now. Many of our customers are just vaguely familiar with the scope of digital services available to them. This program would provide customers with the opportunity to bring their devices to the branch and learn some basic information about their devices, our Online Catalog, our Online Library, and the 14 different applications (apps) that they could use with their devices. Program Description: The program would start with a PowerPoint presentation that would first cover the broad grouping of devices and their features: Apple iOS devices (iPod, iPhone, and iPad), Android devices (phones and tablets), and Kindle devices (Paperwhite and Fire). We would then explain how customers may connect to our branch WiFi. This would be followed by an introduction to our system website, the catalog interface, and the Online Library. The 14 different apps would be presented and briefly explained. After the presentation, the customers would be divided into groups based on their devices and directed to stations where they would get an opportunity to explore some of the apps on their own devices. We would also make use of the system’s new mobile laptop lab to allow customers to create the necessary accounts to access the apps. Teen volunteers would be recruited prior to the program to assist at the various stations. Potential Community Partners: Eleanor Roosevelt High School (area PGCPS STEM center) Program Steps: 1. Submit program proposal for approval. 2. Review system provided tutorials, guides, and promotional materials. 3. Prepare Powerpoint presentation. 4. Contact existing teen volunteer applicants and ERHS to obtain teen volunteers. 5. Determine program date and arrange for mobile laptop lab delivery. 6. Post program on system event calendar. 7. Have program included in weekly events notice sent to Greenbelt New Review. 8. Publicize program within branch in coordination with system provided marketing materials. 9. Conduct training session with teen volunteers. 10. Request Digital Services post information about program on PGCMLS social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) a few days prior to the program date. 11. Present program on scheduled date.

Evaluation: Record attendance statistics. Provide evaluation form at end of program to solicit feedback. Possibly create a special email address for participants to submit requests for further assistance.Library Mission: Prince George's County Memorial Library System provides materials and information for study and personal enrichment. We offer strategies for lifelong learning through access to varied media and professional guidance by our staff. We focus all resources on the needs of our customers. This program would directly support our mission by demonstrating to customers the various ways in which they could use their new smart devices to access the different materials and resources provided by our system. It could potentially create a new path for customers to successfully interact with the library outside the confines of our physical building.LATI Program ProposalRobert ThomasPGCMLS
