PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Parents and Guardians, When you receive this message, many of you would have been in the new building and would have seen, first- hand, the excellent facilities and recognize that it was well worth the wait. During my career, I have been involved with and been in many schools, and I can safely say: Since our resumption of classes in July, we have continued with our regular extra-curricular programmes and theme days, entertained international visitors, experienced field trips and held parent-staff events. As excited and happy about our developments as we are, it is with sadness that we had to bid farewell to Ms. Annie Lim, our Deputy Principal, who has vacated her position to be Head of Academic Quality at Sunway College. When I first met Annie, she was introduced to me as the potential interim Deputy Principal for the January 2010 semester. During our first meeting, I was impressed with Annie’s attitude and her verbal commitment to dedicate herself to doing the best job possible. I told her, “If you were true to your word, you would become so attached to SIS that you would not want to leave”. As it turned out, she has been with us for nearly three years and the original commitment has grown significantly over her time at SIS. Annie Lim has been involved in all aspects of the school; from the planning of the new building to the students’ daily concerns, to building a positive rapport with our parents, students and staff. I cannot begin to count the number of hours that Annie has spent on the running of the School, but she did so with the students, parents and staff front and centre in her heart. Annie is always on top of things; her work day is not numbered in hours, but timed in tasks to be completed. The results of her efforts are the behind-the-scenes accomplishments which have benefitted so many of us at SIS. To me and many others, she is an inspiration. Her disability hampers her yet she accomplishes so much. Annie stands as a role model for all of us, students, parents and staff to emulate. When I think of this, I am reminded of the lyrics from the song, “You Raise Me UpYou raise me up, so I can stand on mountains You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas I am strong, when I am on your shoulders You raise me up, to more than I can be. Good luck dear friend and God bless. You will be truly missed by all. New Year, New Beginnings

ADMINISTRATION

We are excited to announce the revamping of the SIS newsletter as one of the exciting changes taking place in the new year. By the next issue, we will be bringing our readers a revitalized newsletter, with students featuring in a more prominent role, either through content submissions or participation in the Editorial Team. To kick off the revamping exercise, we had a ‘renaming the newsletter’ competition aptly titled, “Name It; It’s YOURS!” The objective was to instill a sense of ownership and pride among the students by giving them naming rights for the revamped newsletter. The students’ creative titles impressed, as did their proactive suggestions for additions and improvements to the newsletter. Winners of the competition will be rewarded with a mystery prize in addition to bragging rights for consecutive semesters.

SIS SPOTLIGHT - FIELD TRIP DAY

Vol 5 Issue 3 December 2012

Students traipsed excitedly into the Harry Potter Exhibit at Marina Bay Sands, where they marveled at Professor Dumbledore’s Elder Wand, levitating cars and similarly magical displays. The students ended their adventure with a trip to the recently opened Legoland amusement park, where the popular childhood toy building bricks were used to recreate miniature reproductions of famous landmarks and sites.

Students had the opportunity to re-enact their Tomb Raider and Indiana Jones fantasies at the 400-square kilometer Angkor Wat Archaeological Park. They gamely explored the largest religious monument in the world, riddled with Hindu and Buddhist influenced friezes, sculptures and steep stairs that challenged the students’ courage and agility. The students avidly photographed the art and architecture of this 13th century ancient capital of Khmer Empire and the colourful cultural performance that followed.

Who knew cultured milk could be so fascinating? Certainly not our students, who visited the Yakult factory and learnt all about the importance of good bacteria to maintain a healthy digestive system in a fun and educational way. The students got to view the entire production process and sample freshly made cultured milk drinks at the end of the tour. The students then stopped at the nation’s federal administrative centre to take in the showcase buildings on the way home.

The students were on a high, literally, as they braved ‘flying foxes’ at exhilarating speeds at the Skytex Adventure Park, Shah Alam. The adrenaline rush continued as the students attempted to balance on their rollerblades and skates to disco music at Wheels Roller Skating, Subang Jaya.

White sandy beaches and balmy sea breezes set the perfect backdrop for our students to explore the crystal clear waters, unblemished corals and stunning sunsets of Pulau Kapas, Terengganu.

Students also enjoyed the thrills and spills of amusement rides at Lost World of Tambun Waterpark and caving in Gua Tempurung, Perak. The younger students found their

adventurous side camping on the hills Broga, Negeri Sembilan. Elsewhere, another group

students immersed themselves in captivating astronomy and scientific discoveries at the

Melaka Planetarium & Adventure Science Centre, Malacca.

SIS & THE COMMUNITY

Vol 5 Issue 3 December 2012

The SIS community is an altruistic lot, doing whatever they can to give back to the community. This semester, students and staff each contributed in their individual way towards raising awareness and funds for worthy causes. Here’s a rundown of just some of the noteworthy activities that the SIS community got involved with wholeheartedly.

October - SIS hosts Shelter One School

Activities, games, meals and performances were the highlights SIS staff organised for a fun-filled day with the students from this community school. SIS students relished interacting with their young charges, culminating in a spectacular cultural performance at a specially planned assembly.

November - Running Together to Outrun Cancer

The Terry Fox Run is a proud tradition at SIS, and this year was no exception. Over 50 volunteers, students and staff arrived early at Padang Merbok in their T-shirts, raring to run. In addition, the students also stayed to help with cleaning up the venue post run.

August - Confections for Charity

Homemade chocolate chip cookies, marble cake and face painting sold out like hot cakes in the Social Action Club’s first ever Bake Sale. Members contributed their culinary prowess and selling skills to raise funds for a children’s home.

SIS SPECIALS

The Games begin at SIS! The 2012 quadrennial Olympics ignited SIS’ sporting spirit and led to SIS staging its very own SIS Games.

The brainchild of Grade 9 & 10 Physical Education teacher, Mr. Evan Long and Guidance Counselor, Mr. Marc-André Plouffe, the SIS Games took place throughout the last week of July to early August.

The SIS Games emulated the official Olympics programme as closely as possible, featuring our own Parade of Nations and Torch Relay as part of the Opening Ceremony. The SIS ‘Olympiads’ hoisted their ‘national’ flags proudly while they marched in a circuit from Sunway International School and around Sunway University campus, with Canadian Principal Mr. John Futa officiating.

The rest of the week saw a series of sporting competitions and games conducted at Monash University field and track, and Sunway Residences swimming pool. To even the playing field, Mr. Long introduced some activities that he adapted, so that students with and without athletic prowess had a fair chance to participate and excel. This significantly contributed to the students’ enthusiasm and confidence escalating parallel with their athleticism as they picked up the finer aspects of these games.

The exemplary sportsmanship the students and staff displayed were inspirational, uniting the different nationalities at SIS...
