CHENNAI, Dec 1:

In a joint operation, IT and EDofficials today searched twogroups based in Chennai andTiruchirappali of a associates ofKarti, whose father and formerFinance Minister P Chidambaramaccused the Government oflaunching a "malicious onslaught"on his family.

Asserting that there was "nocollateral purpose" behind itsaction, a late night press releaseissued by the CBDT in Delhisaid the searches were based on"credible information of taxevasion" and "financial irregu-larities".

The CBDT said while certain"incriminating evidence indica-tive of tax evasion and financialirregularities have been recoveredduring the ongoing investigation,no political person or its familymember are today shareholders ordirectors of the companiessearched or surveyed by theIncome Tax department."

While the Central Board ofDirect Taxes release did not iden-tify the companies searched,sources said the searches conduct-ed on five premises in the twocities included a private eye carechain.

They said while the I-T had

undertaken the action on chargesof suspected tax evasion by thesefirms, the ED was a part of thesearches in connection with theirinvestigation under the provisionsof the Foreign ExchangeManagement Act (FEMA).

Despite repeated attemptsKarti was not available for com-ments.

Soon after reports of thesearches were out, Chidambaramaccused the Government of a"malicious onslaught" launchedby it against his family and said ifit wants to target him, it should doso directly and not harass friendsof Karti.

"If the Government wishes totarget me, they should do so direct-ly, not harass friends of my sonwho carry on their own businessesand have nothing to do with poli-tics," he said in a statement.

"My family and I are quite pre-pared to face the maliciousonslaught launched by the Govern-ment," Chidambaram said.(PTI)
