Preface Extensions and conversions

1.3 Extensions and conversions

Second processor

If only one processor is installed in your server blade, you can upgrade it to include a second one. You may only use processors of the same type in the server blade. The second processor must have the same clock frequency as the first.

Extending the main memory

The system board of the BX630 S2 scalable server blade has four memory banks with two 184-pin DDR2 DIMM slots each. This allows a maximum memory configuration of 32 GB. Each memory bank can be fitted with 512 Mbyte, 1 Gbyte, 2 Gbyte or 4 Gbyte registered DDR2 667 MHz PC2-5300 memory modules.

The two memory modules of one bank must always be fitted in pairs and have the same capacity.

Optional I/O module

The server blade can be equipped with a 4-Gbit FC I/O module or a 1-Gbit Ethernet I/O module.

To allow use of the additional I/O functionality, at least one FC pass-thru blade (or switch blade) or Ethernet LAN pass-thru blade (or switch blade) must be installed in the NET3 and/or NET4 slots of the PRIMERGY BX600 basic unit.

Multi-blade configuration

You can upgrade the BX630 S2 scalable server blade to a quad-socket server blade by connecting two dual-socket server blades, see section “Configura-tions” on page 10.

5 ProcessorsV CAUTION!

Make sure you observe the safety notes in the chapter “Safety instruc-tions” on page 15.

Processors are components which are extremely sensitive to electro-static discharge and must be handled with caution.

When you take a processor out of its protective wrapper or out of a socket, place it on an insulated, antistatic surface with the smooth side down.

Never slide a processor over a surface.

5.1 Installing a second processor

The BX630 S2 dual-socket server blade can be upgraded with a second processor. The upgrade kit includes a processor and a heat sink.

V CAUTION!

Always use processors of the same type. All processors must have the same frequency and cache size. For multi-processor mode use a suitable multi-processor operating system.

Ê Open the server blade as described in the chapter “Preparation” on page 19.

I The BX630 S2 server blades may have two different processor sockets, see figure 8:

6.1 Fitting rules

Figure 18: Slot numbering for memory modules

Slots DIMM 1 through DIMM 4 are assigned to CPU1. Slots DIMM 5 through DIMM 8 are assigned to CPU 2, i.e. they can only be fitted if CPU 2 is installed. The following rules also apply:

● The DIMM slots must be fitted one bank at a time. A memory bank comprises two DIMM slots.

● The two DIMM modules of one bank must have the same type (identical capacity, identical clock rate, single ranked or dual ranked).

If only CPU 1 is installed:

– Start with DIMM 1+2 followed by DIMM 3+4.

If CPU 1 and CPU 2 are installed:

– Start with DIMM 1+2 followed by DIMM 5+6, then DIMM 3+4 followed by DIMM 7+8.

Memory Fitting rules

If you have a quad-socket configuration:

– Start with DIMM 1+2 followed by DIMM 5+6 in the master module, then DIMM 1+2 followed by DIMM 5+6 in the slave module.

Install additional DIMMs in DIMM 3+4 followed by DIMM 7+8 in the master module, followed by DIMM 3+4 and DIMM 7+8 in the slave module.

● If you install memory modules for a CPU which have different memory capacities, you must first install the modules with the lower memory capacity.
