DAY 3 Kibale Forest NP & Bigodi Village

Today the forest opens for a sensational chimp tracking. Kibale Forest is reputable of having the greatest variety and highest concentration of primates in East Africa. After a pre-tracking briefing at walking distance from your accommodation, you will start your hike adventure into the forest. Follow the footsteps of a large habituated family of chimpanzees, with over 120 individuals, that has made Kibale one of the best locations in Africa for chimp viewing. En route your guide will explain more about the forest and the other inhabitants, including other primates and birds such as the blue breasted Kingfisher, black billed Turaco, Pied Hornbill, Chestnut winged Starlings and many more. Upon sighting the chimpanzees, you will stay with them for one unforgettable hour as they continue their daily routine – growling, grooming, feeding, taking care of the young ones and agilely climbing up trees. It certainly is one unforgettable wildlife encounter and the hour is always over too soon. After your forest walk, return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon we transfer to Bigodi Village for a community walk that will bring you closer to the local tribe that lives in this area. Accompanied by a local guide, who can tell you everything about the traditional customs and lifestyle, you will follow the village path and visit a primary school, traditional homesteads and learn more about the crops in the fields. Dinner and overnight at Primate Lodge standard cottages or Primate Lodge luxury cottages. (B-L-D)

Kibale Forest National Park harbors the greatest variety and concentration of primates found anywhere in East Africa. Not less than 13 different species are living in this small area of 560 sq km, including Black-and-White Colobus Monkeys, Blue Monkeys and Grey-cheeked Mangabeys. More important, the dense forest hosts a population of more than 1,000 chimpanzees, allowing visitors the unique opportunity to view these great apes in their natural environment. Just outside the national park you will find Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, offering a number of walking trails in the Magombe Swamp.

DAY 4 Kibale Forest NP – Queen Elizabeth NP 3 hours / 250 km

After breakfast we calmly transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park while we pass the crater lakes area, a beautiful landscape with small lakes and rolling hills. Enjoy (a packed) lunch before going on a first game drive in search of the first wildlife, including warthogs, buffaloes, waterbucks and elephants. Dinner and overnight at Queen Elizabeth Bush Lodge or Katara Lodge. (B-L-D)

The natural beauty in Queen Elizabeth National Park is overwhelming and diverse: green savannah plains with small acacia and euphorbia trees gave way to sunken crater lakes and swamps, bounded by the snow-covered peaks of the Rwenzori Mountains. The park is home to 95 types of mammals, including Uganda Kobs, lions, elephants and the giant forest hog. Moreover, with a bird list of over 600 species, it has the highest number of bird species found in any national park in Africa! On the shores of the Kazinga Channel, a natural link between Lake Edward and Lake George, you will encounter large herds of hippopotamus and many crocodiles. Chimpanzees can be tracked in Kyambura Gorge, while the famous tree climbing lions are found in the southern part of the park, called Ishasha.

Optional: Chimp Habituation Experience Instead of the chimp tracking and Bigodi Village Walk you can also opt for a full day Chimpanzee Habituation Experience. This project offers you the unique experience to join the ranger guides in their research program and spend an entire day with our ‘cousins’. You will watch the chimpanzees starting the day by climbing out of their nests. While following their daily activities, learn more about their way of life have them habituated to human presence.

DAY 5 Queen Elizabeth NP

The day begins early when we start with a morning game drive and head to the mating ground of the Uganda Kobs. We search for lions, elephants, buffaloes and other wild animals in their natural habitat. Alternatively you can decide to experience a second chimp tracking in the lush Kyambura Gorge (pre-booking required). In the afternoon we take on a boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel, a natural channel between Lake Edward and Lake George. The channel is 33 km long and 2-3 km at its widest points. The scheduled 2 hour boat ride (beverages and snacks included!) will cover a 12-14 km stretch of the channel, with almost guaranteed excellent wildlife sightings including multitudes of hippopotamus – possibly the world’s highest concentration – Nile crocodiles, wallowing buffaloes on its reedy banks, elephants, and many birds. Dinner and overnight at Queen Elizabeth Bush Lodge or Katara Lodge. (B-L-D)

DAY 6 Queen Elizabeth NP – Bwindi NP 4-5 hours / 200 km

This morning you have the opportunity to experience a unique Hot Air Balloon Safari, followed by a bush breakfast and game drive (pre-booking required). Later in the morning we calmly proceed towards the southern part of the national park. This area is called Ishasha and is famous for the tree climbing lions. Here we will make a stop at Deo’s Homestead. Deo is a craftsman and farmer, living with his family on the edge of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Visitors are warmly welcomed and will tour around his house and farm, being given a glimpse of the rural Ugandan daily life and how they live in harmony with each other and the surrounding wildlife, but also the challenges they face with the wild animals coming to eat their crops. Deo will show you for example an elephant trench that helps to protect his vegetables from hungry elephants. He will also share with you some of the organic farming methods and his knowledge about medical plant growing and use. The revenue of your visit will fully benefit Deo’s family and the local community. Part goes directly to the host family, another part to other local projects in the area and the remainder into a Savings and Credit Scheme (SACS), encouraging members to save a small amount of money on a regular basis. Enjoy a picnic lunch before we continue to Bwindi National Park, home of the endangered mountain gorillas. Dinner and overnight at Buhoma Community Haven Lodge or Mahogany Springs. (B-L-D)

Optional: Chimp tracking in Kyambura Wildlife Reserve Instead of the morning game drive you can opt for a visit to Kyambura Wildlife Reserve for a guided primate walk. Kyambura is a beautiful gorge completely covered with tropical rainforest. While following the river at the bottom, you will go in search of chimpanzees and other primates that live in this area.

Of the over 800 mountain gorillas worldwide, Bwindi National Park is home to almost half of the gorilla population. There is no better place for observing these gentle giants from a close distance! Thanks to the wildlife conservation program, the number of gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest only has increased from 300 to 400 in the recent years, which include nine different families that are habituated for tourism purposes. Apart from the famous residents, the dense forest hosts 9 other primates. There are different trails in the park, including the Munyanga River Trail and Waterfall Trail, leading through the pristine rainforest to three sparkling waterfalls.

Optional: Hot Air Ballooning in Queen Elizabeth National Park Arise at dawn and transfer to the park gate to meet your ballooning crew and drive to the launch site by the first light. With coffee on site, witness the gigantic balloon being inflated. You will attend a safety briefing before being invited to get on board for a smooth ascension to a bird’s view position. View the Kasenyi plains, the famed mating grounds of the Uganda Kobs, and a haunt for the predators. Enjoy the aerial views of the Kazinga Channel, the Mweya Peninsula and Lake George as well as far down towards Ishasha. Queen Elizabeth is truly famous for magnificent topography and milliard species of wild game, flowers, plants and birds. The one hour long flight at different altitudes culminates with an amazing wilderness. Afterwards you are joined by your regular driver/guide and able to enjoy more game viewing en route back to your lodge where you will have time to relax before lunch and your planned afternoon activity. All in all, an unforgettable African experience that we highly recommend! NB: Children below 7 years old or under 4 feet (1.20 meters) tall are only carried on parents request and at the discretion of the operator. Booking in advance required.

DAY 7 Gorilla tracking

Arise early today and prepare for the highlight of your safari, an unforgettable encounter with the Gentle Giants! Following breakfast, transfer to the national park offices where you will be allocated a gorilla family in groups of 8 as well as a gorilla tracking guide. After a pre-tracking briefing by your guide touching on the gorillas generally, your assigned gorilla family as well as appropriate safety precautions, you drive to the trailhead for the start of a thrilling adventure. Expect to walk between 2 and 8 hours in steep and sometimes muddy conditions with rain overhead, which can be tough and require a degree of (average) fitness. However the thrill of coming face to face with a giant Mountain Gorilla silverback completely makes up for the effort! Please remember to bring your passport for registration, appropriate, water proof hiking boots and a light rain coat. To protect from stinging nettles, we recommend long pants and long sleeved tops. A pair of old gardening gloves can help grabbing onto the vegetation while most hotels/lodges provide a walking stick that come in very handy especially when hiking downhill. A small waterproof backpack is an excellent idea to carry a light snack, bottled water as well as protection for your camera. Upon sighting the gorillas, you spend the allowed one hour with them as they go about their daily life; feeding, moving, playing, raising their young and sometimes wrestling with the juveniles – it is a totally unique and unforgettable experience! Dinner and overnight at Buhoma Community Haven Lodge or Mahogany Springs. (B-L-D)

DAY 8 Bwindi NP – Entebbe 11 hours / 610 km After breakfast we depart the impenetrable forest of Bwindi and head back towards the capital city. Look out for zebras and impalas as the road leads us through the protected area of Lake Mburo National Park and take some photos at the Ugandan equator. With lunch en route we will arrive in Entebbe in the evening. Overnight at Airport Guesthouse or The Boma. (B-L) DAY 9 Departure Enriched with an experience of a lifetime and unforgettable memories you will say goodbye to the Pearl of Africa. In time you will be transferred to Entebbe Airport for your international flight. (B) ** Note: the airport drop off will be arranged by your guesthouse. **

Optional: Tree Planting Both accommodation options in Bwindi are closely involved with the local communities. Buhoma Community Haven Lodge is run by the community members of Buhoma Village and all profits are shared with the local community. Apart from supporting the orphanage Sascu in Kampala and various local projects in Buhoma, Mahogany Springs also invites their guests to plant a tree to compensate at least some of the carbon from their trip. Booking in advance required.
