J.K. Rowling is releasing a chapter of this story every day, over 7 weeks. It is being published free on the website above if you want to read more chapters or even the whole book. https://www.theickabog.com/

This week we’re going to read one chapter and then change some features to retell it as your own story.

This chapter is all about an accident. Think about what sort of accident could happen in your story. You need some main characters, a setting and a mysterious creature!

Try to change the words in blue, to make the story your own.

Beginning

Introduce your characters and the setting.

They are searching for the King’s sword.

e.g. A group of friends are searching for a lost kitten.

King and Captain Roach are left in a clearing in foggy weather.

e.g. Sally and Jordan are in a deep, dark wood. It’s getting dark.

Lord’s Spittleworth and Flapoon carry on, their feet sinking into the mud.

e.g. Harry and Millie go off to search by the enormous, green lake.

Middle

Describe the setting further, this is the action packed, exciting bit of the story where the accident happens and the mysterious creature is described.

See boulders like ghostly elephants. Hear rustling reeds sound like snakes.

Worried that the Ickabog is out there.

Meet Major Beamish

Monstrous, black silhouette appears. See gleaming, white eyes. Hear a long yowl

Flapoon shoots

In the moonlight they see it was a dog not the Ickabog.

Beamish was shot by Flapoon.

Spittleworth finds the King’s sword.

End

Tie up all the loose ends. What happens as a result of the accident?

Roach comes along, Spittleworth and Flapoon pretend the Ickabog has killed Beamish.

Spittleworth and Flapoon hide the sword.

Spittleworth and Flapoon make up a description of the Ickabog – as tall as 2 horse, eyes like lamps.

Spittleworth and Flapoon explan Beamish’s death to the king.

Art challenge! On a sheet of A4 paper, draw lines to create boxes that are roughly 5cm x 5cm or

design some mini picture frames like the one below – be as creative as you like! OR make the pictures any size you like to create a gallery to display at home.

In each box or frame, draw one of the items from the list below or come up with some ideas of your own. You don’t have to do them all in one go, you could do a few each day.

You can use any materials you like to draw the images with, for example: pen, pencil, collage, paint, digital etc.

Try to be as detailed and accurate as you can.

Your hand A character from a book A plant or flower Your own mythical creature Yourself as a superhero An insect Your favourite food A drinks can or bottle A zombie Something red A building Sweets Something green Your initials in an interesting style A weird fish

Your favourite film character A song lyric A treasure map A car A tropical bird A knife and fork Something that makes you laugh A happy memory Something you love Your eye A reflection A phone A birthday cake A shoe A magic key

You could research some famous pieces of Art and have fun trying to recreate them at home.
