English Task 1: It is Captain Bob’s Birthday! He is going to have a party on a boat. He is going to invite all his animal friends.

Can you write an invitation to all the animals to invite them to the party?

Listen to this story with a grown up. Listen to it a few times. Can you start to remember some parts off by heart? You could make up your own actions. Can you retell the story out loud?

Captain Bob’s BirthdayIt was Captain Bob’s birthday. He was going to have a party… on a boat. He wrote an invitation to all his animal friends. “Please come to my party on my boat.” He said. “But you must behave!”Captain Bob got the party ready. There were balloons, jam sandwiches and a big chocolate cake. First a little brown mouse scurried onto the boat and he nibbled the sandwiches. “Stop that!” shouted Captain Bob. But the mouse didn’t listen. After that a slimy green frog hopped onto the boat and he swam in the coca-cola. “Stop that!” yelled Captain Bob. But the frog didn’t listen. Then a fat grey hippo waddled onto the boat and he sat down. His big grey bottom squashed the cake. “Stop that!” screamed Captain Bob. But the Hippo didn’t listen. Finally the boat wobbled. The boat shook. The boat rocked. It began to sink! “Help!” the animals shouted. But Captain Bob didn’t listen! He swam all the way home.

Task 2Tomorrow we are going to retell the story of Bob’s birthday party. Today you can think of your own animals who come to the party and the cheeky things they might get up! Warm up – Can you move like a... snake/crab/bird/rabbit/elephant etc... What word describes how they move?(e.g. Slither/scuttle/flutter/hop/stomp)

Can you write sentences about different animals getting onto the boat? Here are some ideas or you can choose your own.

Examples:

A little brown mouse scurried onto the boat and he nibbled the sandwiches.

A slimy green frog hopped onto the boat and he swam in the coca-cola!

Task 3 Draw a story map of your Captain Bob’s Party story. Which animal will be ‘First’? ‘After that’? ‘Then’? Draw the sinking boat in the ‘Finally’ box. You can draw your own plan or print this one.

Task 4

Today we are writing the story of Captain Bob’s Party. Listen to the original story again to refresh your memory. Look at your story plan. Can you remember which different animals are in your story?

Write the story on lined paper if you can and using a pencil. Remember how we sit in order to use our best handwriting!

Remember we are looking for: Capital letters Finger spaces Full stops ‘and’ to make a sentence longer Challenge – an interesting word to describe how the

animals in your story move.

Extension If you finish your story then you could illustrate it!

English Support for ParentsThis week the children are building up to re-telling a story. The story is included in the pack (Captain Bob’s Birthday!) The more times the children listen to this story and begin to join in with key words and phrases then the easier they will find writing it by the end of the week. In class we always encourage the children to use actions when verbally re-telling stories so feel free to make up your own e.g. an action for party, an action for each animal. Task 1 is a fun ‘hook’ task to engage the children with the story. Task 2 is sentence writing to help prepare some sentences which will be used in the story. The main teaching point is to try and use ‘and’ in these sentences and we explain that using ‘and’ in this way makes the sentences longer and more interesting for our reader. Task 3 is a story plan and the children are very familiar with drawing out their stories into a plan. They need to draw the animals they have decided to use in their own story. It is fine for them to use the same examples in the original story if they so wish. After they have completed a plan it is very useful to then use it to verbally retell their story. Task 4 is writing the final story. The idea is that much of it will be the same as the original story they have listened to. (It is normal that the children will forget most of it however and write a much more condensed version! Please don’t worry about this.) We encourage the children to refer to their story plans. For example, to write a sentence or two for each box. The children could write this story over more than one day depending on their stamina for writing. After the story is finished it is worth celebrating some aspects and then finding one thing to improve on. For example,

correcting one or two spellings or looking together for missing capital letters.

Happy story writing everyone!

5 cubes weigh the same as the slice of cake.12 cubes weigh less than the tennis ball.3 cubes weigh more than the banana.7 cubes weigh the same as the banana.11 cubes weigh more than the tennis ball.

Challenge: Using weighing scales or balancing scales. Can you find two objects that weigh:

the same as each other more than the other less than the other

Use the following sentence for each:

Challenge: can you make up your own problem like this?Maths support for parents:

This week we are focussing on weight and mass. Follow the links to watch the video clip which will demonstrate the learning and vocabulary needed to answer each of the activities. Task 4 will focus on problem solving and reasoning questions to give the children an opportunity to explain their understanding.Task 1: Children should begin by holding objects and describing them using vocabulary such as heavy, light, heavier than, lighter than. If you have scales it would be a nice opportunity to weigh the objects to see if they were correct. The children may believe that larger objects are always heavier and this misconception should be explored. For example, weigh a heavy smaller object and a light larger object to compare.Task 2: Today the children are measuring mass using non-standard units (cubes). Mathematical talk: If I add one more cube to this side, what will happen? How do you know? What if I take a cube away?Task 3: The children will continue to use non-standard units to weigh objects and now focus on comparing the mass of two objects. They use balance scales to compare two objects and use the language of ‘heavier’, ‘lighter’ and ‘equal to’ which will be demonstrated in the video clip. Mathematical talk: which object is heavier? Which object is lighter? Can we order the objects from heaviest to lightest?Task 4: Using the learning from this week, the children can now try some reasoning and problem solving questions. Children should practice using vocabulary such as ‘heavier than’ and ‘lighter than’ when comparing objects. Children should be encouraged to explain why they think their answer is correct.Enjoy your maths learning!

As part of the animal topic we thought it would be nice to make shadow animals! You could do this at bedtime with the torch on your phone and tell a story! Here are some examples of how to make the different animal shapes
