English

Lesson 1

LO: to research facts about the manned SpaceX mission to the ISS

This week we would like you to prepare a short information text for a Year 5 friend about the historic Space X mission to the ISS, which launched on Saturday 30th May 2020. This might be prepared as a presentation / Powerpoint, a typed (or dictated) Word document or as a handwritten piece. First, we would like you to research information about the mission. Watch this week’s English lesson 1 video on the Y5 section of our website.

Have a go at:

If you are feeling very confident, try the challenge:

Lesson 2

18

Search the internet to find information for your text. Here are some links to start you off:

https://blogs.nasa.gov/commercialcrew/2020/05/

https://everydayastronaut.com/dragon-2-dm-2-spacexs-first-crewed-mission/

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-52867494

Every information text will start with an introductory paragraph of general information to capture the reader’s attention. For 2 or 3 other paragraphs, decide which parts of the mission you want to focus on and create appropriate headings. Then, record the key details / facts under the appropriate headings. Remember to use bullet points to record your notes. Here are some ideas to start you off:

Start to plan for the use of powerful vocabulary – think about adding:

* SHAMPOO* Time / Place / Frequency Adverbs* Subordinating conjunctions (after, although, as, because, before, due to, once…)* Relative pronouns (who, whose, that, which, whom)

LO: to write an introduction, using powerful vocabulary to captivate the reader.

Watch this week’s English lesson 2 video on the Y5 section of our website.

Have a go at:

If you are feeling very confident, try the challenge:

19

Write your introduction using the facts you have previously gathered.

In order to captivate the reader, consider how you could use amazing facts, powerful vocabulary, subordinate clauses, formal language, alliteration and questions.

Look at this example of an introductory paragraph about the Dark Ages to inspire you.

Frequently, the Dark Ages are misunderstood. While many know of the Roman times in Britain, the 'Dark Ages', which followed, are often less well known. In Britain, this period in history began with the fall of the Roman Empire and the retreating Roman withdrawal from Britain in 410AD and spanned to circa 1100AD, after the Battle of Hastings. Although knowledgable and cultured, Romans were known for bringing law, order and education to Britain. However, when they left, historical records of what followed ceased almost entirely, until the historic creation of The Doomsday Book by William the Conquerer in 1086AD. Exceptions included Britain’s first English history, The Ecclesiastical History of the English and The Anglo Saxon Chronicle, which was started by Alfred The Great.

Review your complex sentences and ensure you have a variety of placement of the subordinate clauses in the sentences.

e.g. Although they have previously launched numerous satellites into space, the private rocket company, SpaceX, has now historically sent two NASA astronauts into orbit. It's the first time, since the retirement of the shuttles nine years ago, that an American crew has taken off from US territory.

Lesson 3

LO: to write the 1 st paragraph of an information text including relative clauses.

Watch this week’s English lesson 3 video on the Y5 section of our website.

Have a go at:

If you are feeling very confident, try the challenge:

20

Write your first paragraph using the facts you have previously gathered.

In order to captivate the reader, consider how you could use amazing facts, powerful vocabulary, formal language, subordinate clauses, relative clauses, alliteration and questions but focus on your relative clauses using who, which, that, whose, whom.

Look at this example of a paragraph about the Dark Ages to inspire you.

When the Romans, who urgently needed to protect their homelands, left England was open to attacks from the Anglo-Saxons from the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark. During the next 400 years, the determined and skilful Anglo-Saxons were able to comprehensively and hastily take over most of England, which was in disarray, and formed four kingdoms known as Northumbria, Mercia, East Anglia and Essex. The Anglo-Saxons wisely avoided attacking Scotland and

Using the commas appropriately when using both essential and non-essential relative clauses.

e.g. The scientists who had been working on the launch vehicle developed an amazing system for the return, landing and re-use of the booster rockets. The 1st stage, which was used to launch the rocket into orbit, would automatically land vertically on a landing barge in the sea!

Lesson 4

LO: to write the 2 nd and 3 rd paragraph of an information paragraph including parenthesis.

Watch this week’s English lesson 4 video on the Y5 section of our website.

Have a go at:

If you are feeling very confident, try the challenge:

Lesson 5

21

Write your next paragraph / paragraphs using the facts you have previously gathered.

In order to captivate the reader, consider how you could use amazing facts, powerful vocabulary, formal language, subordinate clauses, alliteration and questions but focus on the use of parenthesis ,, () -.

Look at this example of a further paragraph about the Dark Ages to inspire you.

Although many texts say the attacks (which were swift and deadly) began in Lindisfarne in 793AD, raids in Dorset from 789AD actually pre-date this. The Vikings came from parts of Skandinavia - Norway, Sweden and parts of Denmark – but not Iceland as some believed. Along the coast of Britain, for the next 70 years, Vikings would continue to raid monasteries and churches - seizing gold and silver, and carrying off Anglo Saxons to be slaves. After this, the Vikings changed tactics and began their first fierce, full scale invasion in 867AD. The vicious and violent Vikings' previous raids were described as attacks by 'whirlwinds and fiery dragons', so the full invasion must have seemed like the end of the world!

Can you find examples of parenthesis in your research? What type of parenthesis do they use most often? Discuss with your adult what you have found.

LO: to create a ‘published’ version of your text, including key features.

Watch this week’s English lesson 5 video on the Y5 section of our website.

Have a go at:

If you are feeling very confident, try the challenge:

22

Finally, prepare a ‘published’ (final) version of your text.

Try to include key features of a non-chronological report:

Title Introductory paragraph Subheadings Informative paragraphs Pictures Captions Questions Formal language Bullet points

Look at the example below for inspiration.

Include a Glossary – explaining the meaning of scientific vocabulary you have used. Look at this example for inspiration.
