Product Focus

• Air-insulated withdrawable

switchgear with vacuum

circuit-breakers and contactors

Eaton Electric B.V.The medium voltage activities carrying Eaton’sHolec brand are directed towards switchgearinstallations and components for applications indistribution networks (main and substations, transformer stations) and for industrial powersupply. The switchgear systems are air or epoxy-resin insulated and are in most cases equippedwith circuit-breakers based on Eaton vacuuminterrupters. Eaton thus offers an extensiverange of switchgear systems and switchgearcomponents, ensuring a safe and reliabledistribution of electrical energy.

Eaton creates power-engineering solutions assuring safe and reliable supply of electrical

energy. With manufacturing subsidiaries and sales organisations world-wide, Eaton focuses on

electrical distribution and power supply in both low and medium voltage ranges.

Creating Solutions

Unitole Type UP distribution system.

Unitole - tried and tested technology from Eaton• Safe in operation• Safe for operators• Extremely reliable• Flexible• Easy to operate• ISO 9001 certified (since 1989)

Motor control centresContactor panels can be used in industrial applications, with motors and transformers being switched andprotected with contactors, with short-circuit limitingfuses fitted in series. Contactor panels can beassembled in random configuration with feeder andother panels. If a large amount of secondary equipmentneeds to be assembled in the panel, a 620 mm widepanel is available.

The contactor panels are fitted with state-of-the-artcontrol and protection equipment (e.g. an integratedmotor control system) with operation, protection andcommunication equipment based on computertechnology.

AutomationUnitole UP can be equipped with state of the artprotection relays and automation for link-up to SCADAor Distributed Control Systems.

Unitole UP system

Eaton’s Unitole UP system is a universal switchgearsystem. It is specifically suitable for application as amotor control centre in process industry and in primarysubstations (main distribution stations). Unitole UPswitchboards are made for 3 mm steel plates andequipped with vacuum circuit-breakers or contactors. The panels are metal clad design and tested to IEC publication 62271-200.

Primary substations Vacuum circuit-breakers (vcb’s) are used as incomingand outgoing feeders in primary substations (maindistribution stations). The vcb’s are mounted on a truckfor easy isolation of the fixed part. The truck runsinside the panel on metal guides and rollers; outsidethe panel the truck is easy to move on its nylonwheels. In the inserted position the truck isautomatically earthed via an earth strip in the baseplate. The truck is driven into the service position andback by an externally operated spindle.

ContactorsFor motor starters, transformers and capacitor banks, the Unitole system can be provided with contactorpanels. Contactors for 3.6 or 7.2 kV are mounted on atruck together with H.V. fuses, and voltagetransformers if required. These contactor trucks can then be used in all typeUnitole panels of width 620 mm. Surge arresters canalso be mounted at the cable terminals.

Two contactor panels in oneIf a compact solution is required two 400 mm wideunits can be fitted in a single 800 mm Unitole UPpanel. Feeder panels, outgoing panels with circuit-breakersand contactor panels can easily be combined in a singleswitchboard.Insertion, withdrawal and mechanical operation can alltake place with the door closed.

Switching devicesUnitole panels are suitable for a wide variety of switching devices and combinations. The vacuum interrupters developed by Eaton are the very core of the Eaton vacuum circuit-breakers used in the Unitole UP system and tested to IEC 62271-100.

The vacuum circuit-breakerThe vacuum circuit-breaker was specially developed by Eaton and has the following features:• Small dimensions, takes up little space• Explosion-free• Suitable for numerous operations• No external switching phenomena• Rapid dielectric recovery ensures circuit interruption at the first current-zero• Low maintenance requirements• Long service life

Earthing switchFor cable earthing, a fault-make earthing switch ismounted in each compartment as standard. Thisearthing switch is then made secure by means ofan interlock when the truck has been inserted, toprevent the equipment from being switched on bymistake. For busbar earthing a separate panel witha withdrawable fault-make earthing switch on truckis provided.

Turnkey installationsIf you wish the switchgear installation and thehousing to form a single transportable unit, Unitoleinstallations can be placed inside a container. Theadvantage here is that assembly and other work onsite is restricted to a minimum. In such cases, theentire installation is assembled and inspected byEaton itself. The container also provides goodhousing conditions for the installation. On request, the container can be provided with lighting, airconditioning, and/or a separate control room.
