Welcome to our Week Four newsletter. The first weeks of term have certainly been busy with Edu-dance, swimming, and all of the work that we have been doing in starting a new year. This year is particularly busy with the work that we are doing for our application to become an Independent Public School (IPS). Coogee Primary School: Why become an Independent Public School The journey to become an IPS is an exciting and rewarding path for those school that are successful. Some people may be confused about a public school becoming independent, and question why it is necessary. Only committed and proactive school communities can become IPSs and that because IPS communities take a greater role in education with the goal of delivery high quality education to their students. This does have a direct impact on the principal because IPS principals have a direct line relationship with, and are accountable to, the Director General of the Department of Education. have greater independence for local decision making which directly reflects the needs of their students

and communities establish dynamic and open governance relationships with the people in their communities have continued access to central and regional support services are supported by the full range of resources and infrastructure that comes with being part of the Western

Australian public school system. At our school there are significant benefits and opportunities in becoming an IPS. I am excited about this prospect because of what becoming an IPS means for our students, staff and community. Opportunities:

Imagination: Empowerment to imagine NEW possibilities for the future of Coogee PS. Reputation: to be recognised as a progressive school, moving in the right direction, committed to a continuous improvement supported by informed accountability mechanisms. Flexibility: the ability to respond to the varied needs of students, staff and our school Community and to support the progress of all.

Excellence: to build on a culture of excellence to include a focus on improving the quality of teaching and learning experiences for our students.

Connected: To foster deeper and more targeted relationships with parents and the wider community.

At every level we will all commit to providing opportunities that: Give students a voice in imagining REAL opportunities for their future. Create conditions for ALL students to achieve their full potential so they feel:

connected to their school community engaged in their own learning that they are thriving academically and socially empowered and capable of flourishing now and into their futures

As many of you may know, our school took part in our three-year review process in 2019. The results from that review were very positive about the direction of the school and about the plans for our future development. I believe our school is now well positioned to become an IPS, and to benefit from the increased independence, which comes with being an IPS. To be successful, however, the support of the community is

essential. Over the coming weeks more information, including a parent survey, will come home. It is important that our parents demonstrate their commitment and a proactive approach for us to be successful. Supporting all students in their learning We regularly review how we support our students to achieve their full potential. In the first 3 weeks of school all students that have been identified as needing extra support, have been assessed and their progress data analysed. We have used this data to inform what areas of need these students have and how we can support them through our Accelerated Learning Programme. Some students, however, may take a little more time to learn important concepts but their learning can be supported at the classroom level. To support these stu-dents, we have introduced streaming in some areas this year. These include Spelling and Mental Mathe-matics. This means that all students will have work at their appropriate level in these areas, and students that need some extra consolidation or extension can be better supported. Are our children Safe? The number of children with access to online devices has increased significantly during the past five to ten years. That access to online devices and platforms brings with it a certain amount of risk for our children. Most parents are aware of the physiological impact on the functioning of the brain from regular and lengthy exposure to screens. Often, however, the dangers associated with unsupervised online activities for our children may not be considered. I have provided a link below, which will take you to the e-safety parent page. There is some useful information in this, so I encourage all parents to take the time to read this. https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents/big-issues/cyberbullying Parent Parking I continue to receive parent complaints about other parents who do not follow our parking rules, and who demonstrate an aggressive or unpleasant attitude to others. We have had a number of days when staff have been double parked in the staff car park because parents have taken staff parking bays. This almost always happens when there are many parent bays available in the morning. Our parking bays will soon be individually marked with Principal, Deputy Principal and staff. Two bays will be marked for Visitors. I am hopeful that parents, carers and grandparents will do the right thing, and demonstrate appropriate regard for our parking rules, as a positive model for our students. While most of our parents and family members go out of their way to do the right thing, I urge all who are here to drop-off or pick-up to uphold the positive culture of our great school by showing kindness and consideration for others.

HARMONY DAY

Harmony day was celebrated early this year to accommodate swimming lessons/carnival as well as edu dance. Harmony Day promotes diversity and acceptance of other cultures. Harmony Day aims to start a conversation about heritage, culture and community. The students certainly enjoyed wearing traditional costumes and/or orange as well as sharing food from their cultures with staff and other students. Thank you to Mrs Anderson for organising a whole school activity during LOTE lessons.

Have a look at these amazing Bush Fire poems from some of our clever students in Room 15.

SCHOOL NEWS

Bush fire by Ka-Lani

Bush fire with red and orange flames. Hot, burning trees. Fire fighters rushing with the hose.

A bush Fire by Hudson.

A greedy orange flame Flew through the town Like a cheetah Burning houses flickering with warmth. Here comes the fire brigade. SPLASHHHHHHHHHH and it’s all over.

BUSHFIRE by Isabelle.

Red, orange, yellow, going every-where in town. Crimson flickering light. Bushes in flames, flammable trees. No homes left for native wildlife. Homes lost in the blink of an eye. Helicopters and water bombers. Trying to put the bush fire out. People getting to safety.

FIRES. By Blake. Red fire, blue fire, Orange fire, violet fire. Fires light up. Fires die down. Get rid of the fire bugs, all around. Campfires, Bushfires, House fires, BBQ fires. Fire bugs cause fires. Cigarettes cause fires. Get rid of them both!

JETT Camp Fire.

Camp fire is hot. Try to cook a marshmallow. It burns. Try to cook another one. Then you drop it.

Camp Fire by Luke.

Toasting marshmallows, Too burnt. Not burnt enough. Perfect. Oh no! We’ve run out of marshmallows. Don’t worry. I’ve got lots.

BUSH FIRE DESTROYING LIFE. By Jessica.

Ferocious fire. Flickering fire light. Violet and orange flames, destroying life.

Lashes of lightning, leaving fire. Life has to run. Running out of life.

Warmth is rising but rain is running. Fire is out, leaving losses of life.

CANTEEN NEWS

WELCOME BACK! You might have noticed a few changes happening with the canteen over the past year. We are on a move to stream-line the ordering process. if you have any suggestions, comments or critiques send them our way, we want to know how we can make it better. To the parents already using our Canteen App – Please update your child’s room details. This can be done in settings/students/Child’s Name. This is important as we endeavour to make sure children get their lunches, but if the infor-mation given is incorrect, their lunch can take a little longer getting to them! While you’re in settings please update your child’s allergy information – this helps us quickly identify any allergens or special precautions that need to be taken to make you’re your child receives the right lunch. Over the long weekend we will be implementing a new feature in the server to make ordering even easier for you. If you haven’t a;ready we ask that you update your Canteen App on Monday afternoon – ready for school on Tuesday. It is important that if you are using the app, that you do update it, to ensure you are getting the right information and the best version available. If you find you are having issues with the Canteen App pop by and see Rayleen or call Libby they are always happy to help. Android users – we need you! We are finally ready to launch our test app for our android users. Do you want to be part of a small testing group? We need users who can navigate, critique and appraise the app to make sure it’s user friendly for all. If you want to get involved please email [email protected]. We have made some recent changes to our menu, which can now be found on the School Stream app, on the Coogee Primary Website and hard copies can be collected from the canteen itself. As we mentioned in the newsletter this time last year, we have made the decision to close the canteen on Tuesdays, for a hot food service. This is now permanent. This doesn’t mean the students can’t order lunch, it only means we won’t be serving hot food or frozen treats. We have created a “Pack and Pick Up” Lunch pack for students which includes a sandwich, wrap or roll, a juice box or water and a snack. This will hopefully minimise disruption for those students who like to order lunch! The canteen will be open until 9.30am on Tuesdays to accommodate ordering school and before school snacks. We have implemented the changes on the App (as mentioned above) to reflect menu item availability permanently. Are you new to the school? Or transitioning from Pre-Primary to Year 1? Pop by and check out how our canteen works. We are open before school, recess, lunch and even afterschool to demolish those hunger pains! As always providing lunches and feeding the students is our first and foremost priority please tell your children if they don’t receive their lunch as ordered, to come and see us and we will track it down and sort it out on the spot. That goes for drinks and snacks too! We hope that you can appreciate that once the baskets leave our canteen we have no control over what happens to the lunches, but please be assured that we are working with the teachers to ensure everyone gets what they have ordered. All of our meals are made onsite – we don’t use any preservatives or additives and all of our menu items are made weekly onsite and most can be requested in Gluten Free. If you have any allergies or intolerances and aren’t sure what could suit your child pop by the canteen and have a chat to Libby or Rayleen and we will be pleased to assist you! That’s it from us in the Canteen have a wonderful long weekend!
