KEY STAGE 2 FRENCH METHODOLOGY

Who are these courses for? For anyone teaching French to children in their first, second, third or fourth year of language learning. They are all based on the ‘Cave Languages’ support resources, see overleaf how to access these resources and planning.

Course content: 1. The French to be taught that term will be practised. 2. The choice and progression of language structures for that term will be analysed and

discussed. 3. The activities, planning and resources for that term will be demonstrated and

experienced.

Teaching Years 3, 4 & 5 Courses planning for the delivery of the Catherine Cheater schemes of work. There are 3 twilight courses per year group, each designed to support delivery of language for that term.

Twilight Courses 4.15-5.30pm (attend all 3 dates)

• Year 3 (1st year) 22nd September, 13th January & 29th April • Year 4 (2nd year) 23rd September, 14th January & 30th April • Year 5 (3rd year) 24th September, 15th January & 27th April

Teaching Year 6

Courses planning for a scheme of work designed to review and consolidate prior learning in Years 3, 4 & 5 through a series of creative projects. There are 3 twilight courses, each one designed to support delivery of particular projects.

Twilight Courses 4.15-5.30pm (attend all 3 dates)

• 25th September Project 1: Writing a simple colour poem • 11th November Project 2: Moi et toi

Project 3: A monster description • 11th March Project 4: Guess the animal

Project 5: ‘Ours brun’ story

FRENCH LINGUISTIC UPSKILLING

French Pronunciation and Grammar – Stage 1

Who is this course for? This is a course suitable for anyone who lacks confidence in their pronunciation and understanding of the French language. It is for complete beginners as well as those with some knowledge of French.

Course content: The key French phonic sounds will be identified and practised using a hands-on sound, action, spelling system. The language encountered in the teaching of French to Years 3 and 4, for example, nouns, articles, gender, singular and plurals will be analysed in workshop activities.

• Day Course: 19th September, 9.15am - 3.00pm • Twilight Course: 17th September, 30th September & 16th October

4.15– 5.30pm (attend all 3 dates)

French Pronunciation and Grammar – Stage 2

Who is this course for? This is a course suitable for anyone who has attended ‘Pronunciation and Grammar Stage 1’ or has a ‘rusty’ knowledge of French.

Course content: Key French phonic sounds will be reviewed using a hands-on sound, action, spelling system. The language encountered in the teaching of French to Years 5 and 6, for example, adjectival agreement, using verbs and writing complex sentences will be analysed in workshop activities.

• Day Course: 16th September, 9.15am - 3.00pm • Twilight Course: 18th September, 29th September & 14th October

4.15– 5.30pm (attend all 3 dates)

Teaching Language in Primary Schools

Who is this course for? This is a one-day course suitable for anyone teaching or intending to teach French in Key Stage 2. For teachers lacking confidence in their linguistic ability, it is advisable to attend first the ‘French Pronunciation and Grammar Up-skilling’ course.

Course content: A wide range of activities to teach French over 4 years in Key Stage 2 will be demonstrated. The activities will ensure that the language is taught progressively and meets the objectives of the new curriculum to be implemented in September 2014.
