Local Press Afraid To Speak Out

In the early morning hours of 4 July 1984, arsonists burned down the offices and warehouse of the Institute For Historical Review in Torrance, California. Thousands of books were torched; manuscripts, records and docu­ments, many of them irreplaceable, were destroyed in the flames. (see: Torrance Daily Breeze, 5 July, and L.A. Times, 6 July)

The Institute For Historical Review (IHR) publishes books and a scholar­ly quarterly that promote the view, among others, that the "Holocaust" that took place in Eastern Europe during World War 11 is mis-represented in the scholarly community, and thus in the press and media. It claims there is no proof (that would be acceptable in a United states court o"f' law) to show that more or less 6,000,000 Jews were lTexterminated" iii Nazi "gas chambers".

In 1946 IBIS VERLAG of Linz and Vienna, Austria, published a book put together by Simon Wiessenthal titled KZ MAUTHAUSEN, which allegedly describes how it was to be interned in Mauthausen concentration camp.

On page 64 of KZ MAUTHAUSEN there is a reproduction of a drawing signed by ns. Wies­senthal" 'depicting three camp prisoners, dres­sed in striped camp uniforms, who have been executed by German 58. The three victims are shown hanging f'rom their execution pasts in grotesque and pathetic poses, and it breaks you r heart to imagine what Simon Wiesenthal must have suff'ered being forced to observe such events while being helpless to stop them.

Now for the amusing part. In the 11 June 1945 issue of LIFE MAG­

AZINE there are several pages of photo-jour­nalism showing three youthful German soldiers being executed as spies by the American mili­tary. The German youths had been caught be­hind American lines wearing American uniforms, were court martialed and condemned to death, as they must have known they would be if' they were discovered.

We consider it a grave crime against the ideals of a free press and the rights of free inquiry. We think this is too obvious to belabor.

No editorial reference has been made in the Los Angeles press or media to this scandalous, terrorist attack against the p ress in it's own community? It doesn't wash for you to reply that you disagree with the historical viewpoint of the IHR and that, therefore, in this one instance, you have no responsibility to speak out in defense of the ideals of this nation and your ow~ p rofession .

And that is one of the ironies that will be­come evident as you read Prima Facie. You don't have to be an tlexpert" to under­stand that it doesn't do to burn down your neighbor's house when they do nat believe what you demand they believe . And you don't have to be a "scholar" to see through claims about the Holocaust that, on their faces , are asinine. ------Prima Facie is not dedicated to prov­ing that the Holocaust "never happened . H I am dedicated to the ideals of a free press and the r' ight of all to freely exchange their ideas, one with the other, without havil1S to suffer the threat of being beaten, burned or defamed. And I do not see why this p roposition should be difficult to either understand or accept.

Twenty odd years ago (~an. and Feb. 1962) when I was being prosecuted for sell­ing a forbidden book, Henry Miller's novel Tropic of Cancer, I was praised and encour­aged on every side to hold my ground against the censors. The ACLU offered their serv­ices to me without charge. "Civil liberties fl

lawyers rang me up from allover the country to chat. Idealistic book se llers congrat­ulated me on my stand. Ladies clubs invited me to speak at their lunchoens . Jewish friends feted me in their homes.

Things are different now. The free speak committee of the ACLU has not been

willing to lift a finger to protect writers or publishers in this town who do nat follow the accepted line on the "holocaust". Writers, publishers and h~storians all across the land applaud the suppression and slander of Holocaust revisionists. Book dealers will nat sell dissenting studies an the Holocaust on principle! Respected academics defame re­visionist writers with epithets of "nec-nazi" and "anti-Semite!! but refuse to meet with re­visionists openly and honestly in journals or in public debate,. And the press regularly allows cowardly and uniformed attacks on re­visionists to be made in its pages but rou­tinely refuses .to allow revisionists to re­ply.

So, things are different now. I'm the same sweet fellow I was 20 years ago, I still stand on the side of a free press a­gainst the violence, ignorance and hate of censorship, but there is no doubt about it, things are different now.

Much of the responsibilit y for this wretched and ugly state of affairs lies with the Anti-Oefamation League of 8'nai 8'rith, and the Simon Wiesenthal Center of Holocaust Studies. But not all of it.

The press and media in this tawn, chal­lenged by the intimidation, suppression and finally the destruction of one of its own, has behaved without courage, without prin­ciple and without grace,. vJhen an inter­nationally known publisher of books and a scholarly journal is burned to the ground in this city by arsonists, and every indication for motive suggests that the arson was polit­ically motivated, Las Angeles publishers and editors joined together to sit on each others hands, as if they had nothing in their hearts but pleasure, and nothing in their minds at all.

On page 48 there are three photos, each showing one of the German youths (aged 21,18, and 23) being tied to their execution posts, white targets pinned to their hearts. Accord­ing to LIFE, they refused the ministrations of an American chaplain, and they sang pat ­riotic German songs together until the bullets exploded in their chests.

Then on page 50 there are three more photos showing the three young German sol­diers, dead now, hanging from the posts to which they are tied, having assumed, with a coincidence that is really too wonderful to believe, the exact poses of the three executed ~authausen camp inmates drawn from "memory" by Simon Wiesenthal and published a year later in his book KZ MAUTHAUSEN

In order to make his drawing more "ac­curate" Simon had to change the American military garb worn by the Germans when they were executed to the striped clothing worn by camp inmates. Other than that he was content to copy the LIFE photographs and simply change the captions.

It is not difficult to conclude, hold­ing the pictures in my hand, that while the three "Nazi" youths behaved courageously and died honorably, that Simon Wiesenthal, taking here his first step out into the

world as a renowned "Holocaust Survivor," being 35 years old at ~ time, began his ca­reer by fraudulently exploiting the deaths of men who appear to have" been his betters. And as you will learn, there is no evidence that his character has improved with age.

SIMON WIESENTHAL SCREWS THE LOS ANGELES HERALD EXAMINER

On 4 March 1984 the Herald Examiner published a lengthy interview with Simon Wiesenthal by staff writer Steven Dough­erty. Here you will find all the evasions of professional responsiblity and good sense that is typical of the press when it treats with the "Holocaust" and its spokes­men.

In this interview, Wiesenthal told Dougherty what he has told numerous report­ers and others, that he lost H89" of his relatives to "Nazi murderers." Now this is serious charge, which Dougherty accepts as

fact. In Wiesenthal' s tlmemoirs, If The Murder-

ers Among Us, which is devoted largely to describing his experiences at the hands of "Nazis," 88 of the famous "89" seem to have slipped his mind, and the one "mur­der," even as he told the story in the Herald Examiner, is hearsay. He said he saw SS men "herd groups of women and child­ren aboard boxcars for shipment to death camps in Poland. One such group included his mother." One has to take Wiesenthal at his word that he even "saw" that. You are going to discover that when you take Weisenthal at his word, you're setting yourselr up for a fall, comrade.

The other three members of Wiesen­thaI's family whose deaths are recounted in his book are: his father who died dur­ing World War ~, his stepfather who died in a Soviet prison, a stepbrother who was arrested and later shot by the Russians. That is, out of the three, two were bagged by the commies and ~ by Nazi murderers.

~/hy doesn't Wiesenthal spend a little time in the Soviet-bloc countries hunting down "war criminals?"- (Is there a story there?)

Anyhow, the count is one "hearsay" victim of "Nazi murderers" of Weisenthal's family, and Prima Facie would like to know something about the missing "88."

A man now occupied by writing a book about well known Holocaust survivors wrote recently to Yad Vashem asking for the names of the missing 88 Nazi murder vic­tims. Yad Vashem replied saying it had no way to supply such inFormation. A letter to Wiesenthal himself seeking the same in­formation remains unanswered.

Do you think there's a story there? I think there is, and I think it might prove to be unusually amusing. It's yours, with my compliments.

SIMON WIESENTHAL SCREWS POLISH SURVIVOR And Maybe About 1100 OTHER "WAR CRIMINALS"

Dougherty writes that Simon Wiesen­thaI is responsible for bringing Adolph Eichmann and "some 1,100 other Nazi war criminals to justice,1T as if the statement were a proven fact.. Of .the 1,100, Wiesen­thaI is stated as saying, "only three con­fessed to their crimes." The implication being that while only uthree confessed," the other 1,097 or so were clearly guilty anyway.

reporters of the Chicago Sun Times, that he has "never had a case of mistaken iden­tity." Let us now turn to an account of the trial of "Nazi war criminal" Frank Walu5,. Perhaps the best account of this mistaken-identity story is that reported by Flora Johnson in the Chicago Reader, 21 January 1981., The Feader headlined the story:

"The u..S. government wanted a war criminal. So with the help of Simon Wiesenthal, the Israeli police, the local press, and judge .Julius Hoffman, they invented one."

Let's get something straight," .John­son begins.. "Frank Walus is innocent. He did not kill Jews in the ghettos of Kielce and Czestochowa in Poland during World War 11. He wasn't even in Poland during most of the war, he was in Germany, where he was a forced laborer, a sort of slave, on German farms. He has witnesses and documents to prove it .•.

Simon Wiesenthal's role in this story is ••• mysterious ••• In 1974, the much gloriFied 'Nazi hunter' apparently sent a letter to the U.S. Government in which he charged that Frank Walus had committed war crimes. Nobody seems to remember what was in the letter, if they had seen it at all ••• John Gubbins (U.S .• prosecutor) says that this letter caused the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization to begin investigating Walus.

"Toward the end of 1974, Wiesenthal's Jew~sh Documentation Center issued a year­end report that stated: 'The Documentation Center succeeded in tracing a Pole in Chicago who performed his duties with the Gestapo. His name was Frank Walus·. r But the report didn't say on what basis, iF any, Wiesenthal denounced Walus •••

"According to Gerald C. Bender, the lawyer who represents the Jewish Documenta­tion Center in the (American) midwest, Wiesenthal 'will not reveal any of his sources unless the people who give the in­formation consent. So we are not likely to find out where Wiesenthal did get his information, or whether he had any.

"However, no documents ever have been produced linking Walus to the Gestapo, and all witnesses against Walus were located after 1974. Thus it is logical to assume that the 'reports1 received by Wiesenthal actually were rumors •••

IfIn other words, Simon Wiesenthal had

no evidence against Frank Walus. He de­nounced him anyway."

You really have to read the original article in full to grasp how much fraud, lying and slander went into Walus being conv icted in court as a "Nazi murderer. 1T

The judge was the notoriously stupid and comic Julius Hoffman of the "Chicago Seven" scandal,. When the appeals court ordered that Walus be retried, the U.S. Government simply dropped the case, as it saw no hope of winning the case before a sane judge.

"In the daily press, stories about the Seventh Circuit decision (ordering a retrial) on the Walus case reveived little play. The only newspaper to focus on the decision was the Chicago Lawyer, a monthly read primarily by lawyers. Chicago Lawye r reported the decision in detail and wrote in an editorial: 'To read the opinion of the Seventh Circuit in the Frank Walus case is to Feel a sense of shame ••• '

"Not surprisingly, newspaper stories ••• except For the Chicago Lawyer - left the impression that Walus might be guilty, but that the government had not been able to obtain enough evidence to prosecute him successFully .• .• .• (emphasis supplied)

"Why was Walus made to suffer this last indignity? The Chicago Lawyer analy­sis is that the 'Nazi hunters' don't care about Walus one way or the other, that they want to rescue the reputations of the 11 eyewitnesses who 'identified' Walus as the man they saw commit war astrocities 35, now 40 years, after the fact, ••• "

Prima Facie wonders if there isn't a story here someplace? Maybe the next time Simon Wiesenthal flies into your town to cook up some geriatric war criminal hys­teria one of you could ask him about the claim that when it comes to fingering war criminals, "Simon Wiesenthal never makes a mistake," which is how he put it to Chicago Sun Times write r Abe Peck.

Perhaps one of you could ask \-.siesen­thaI this question: nWhat distinguiShes the way you handled the Frank Walus Fiasco from the way you handled the other 1,099 Nazi war criminal cases where everyone the accused, except three, claimed he was innocent of your charges and everyone was convicted?"

It would be alright if you asked him that. You're professional journalists!

In the 21 April 1983 issue of USA Today, Simon Wiesenthal told Barbara--­Reynolds: "When I was released from Mauthausen camp ••• I was one of 34 prisoners alive out of 150,000 who had been put there."

Do you believe he told the truth? . You will.be intereste~ and, depend-~~g on your p~~losophy of Ilfe, perhaps tlckled, to dlscover that according to Evelyn Le Chene's Mauthausen: History of a Death Camp (see pps 166-168 and 190/91), when the Americans liberated Mauthausen "death" camp they discovered 64,000 (thou­sand!) internees alive and waiting to be taken care of. Which did not include the 28,000 (thousand!) that had been previous­ly released or transferred elsewhere or , who had escaped..

What do you think? As professionals? Are you going to go on believing every­thing Simon Wiesenthal and other Holocaust cultists tell you about the "genocide" of the six million and dismiss out of hand those who are "revising" the history of this age? Why?

I don't mean to suggest that every­thing Simon says is a lie or an error. What I am suggesting is that Holocause "revisionists" are not wrong about every­thin9 either. Let's talk about it. What do you think would be wrong in talking about it?

PSYCHOTIC BLOOD FANTASIES PLAGUE HOLOCAUST CULTIST ELIE WIESEL

Elie Wiesel is the Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities at Boston Univ­ersity, recipient of honorary degrees from universities scattered across North America and Israel and "spokesman for .Jews in the United States and throughout the world." Nevertheless, I propose that it is self­evident that this man is not wrapped too tight.

For example, in his book, The .Jews of Silence: A personal Report on Soviet Jewry (NAL 1966, pa8) Wiesel asks rhetori­cally: "How many .Jews were killed at Babi Yar?" He's not certain about that, but he records for us, and for all those children who study his writings in our high schools

and colleges, one of the spectacular phenomena of our age. "Eyewitnesses say that for months after the killings the ground continued to spurt geysers of blood."

Pretty wonderful, eh? Letts pause here For a moment and reflect on what Wiesel is telling us.

As an example of the power and value of this new literature, Wiesel quoted ex­tensively From crazy Yankiel Wiernik, who was interned at Triblinka concentration camp during 1942/43. There Wiernik work­ed as a carpenter for the 55, escaped, and gave an account of his adventure to the world. You can read his crazy story in its entirety in Death Camp Treblinka, ed. by Alexander Donat (New York, Holo­caust Library, 1979).

crowded into a (gas) chamber measuring 125 square Feet in Treblinka.'"

That is, into a . room about the size of your kitchen perhaps. 10 feet wide, 12' 6" long. 450 to 500 people, eh? What do you think? Those SS guys must have really known hew to fill a house. Appar­ently no professor at Northwestern Univ­ersity questioned the propriety of accept­ing such an outlandish claim. Why?

"You must listen to more," Wiesel told his audience that night.. still, of the various passages he read from crazy Yan­kielfs memoir, he overlooked (purposeful­ly? ) some of the most comic ones, such as:

"Work was begun to cremate the dead (about 20,000 to 30,000 a day, ed-.). It turned out that bodies of women burned more easily than those of men. Accord­ingly, the bodies of women were used for kindling the fires." 00 you like that one? Or do you think Yankiel was just sucking up to those militant feminists who claim that women are better for any jdb than men?

How about this one? "It was a terrifying sight. The most gruesome ever beheld by human eyes. When corpses of pregnant women were cremated, their bellies would burst open. The fetus would be exposed and could be seen bu r ning inside the monther's womb."

Pretty neat, eh? Remarkable too, particularly when you reflect on how the American and British militaries burned tens of thousands of pregnant German and ~apanese women in aerial bombardments during the war and those women were unable to pro-vide their chroniclers with the same uni-que exhibition. Is Elie Wiesel, in recommending Wiernickrs memoirs to us, suggesting that only Jewish women have the talent to display their burning fetu­ses in such a fabulous manner? Or is this an example of ethnocentrism running amok? Is it something else?

Now, what I need to understand (I ~ this) is why so many in the press and media, and in the universities, accept at face value what an Elie Wiesel or any of the cultists he surrounds himself with have to say about the Holocaust, the "death camps," or anything else. On the face of it, either they are fools or believe you are,. Maybe, just maybe, they believe what they are telling you about those matters, but maybe, just maybe, their contempt for your intelligence and your char­acter is beyond anything you could ever have imagined.

CONGRESSMAN HENRY A. WAXMAN HAPLESS IGNORAMOUS OR SIMPLE PUTZ?

In the 30 August 1984 issue of B'nai B'rith Messenger congressman Henry A. Waxman has written another of his brainless and in­nuendo-filled articles about Holocaust "revi­sionists," this one titled: "Holocaust De­Bunkers Persist." In it he characterizes professor A.R. Butz, author of The Hoax of the 20th Century, as a bizzare figure who was "de_ ported by the British for his fascist activi­ties."

This is a simple lie.. I challenge Wax­man to show where Butz has been Ifdeported by the British!! for any reason. The lie is a particularly filthy one, as it labels Butz a fascist, which is an epithet used by unprin­cipled men t o gratuitously destroy the repu­tations of men who have challenged the beliefs

GERMAN QUARTERLY BETRAYS AMERICAN IDEAL OF A FREE PRESS

In the Winter 1984 issue of the German Quarterly, a pUblication of the Association of American Teachers of German (AATG), there was a n advertisement For a book by Charles Weber titled: The Holocaust: 120 Questions and Answers. Dr . Weber is the former head of foreign languages at the Uni"~rsity of Oklahoma at Tulsa, a member of AATG, and is on the board of IHR .

The people at the Simon Wiesenthal Center probably didn't like the questions Or. Weber asked in his book; I feel ce r tain they did not like the answe r s, so they decided to squelch it.. Acco r ding to Heritage (Los Ange­les, 24 March 1984) :

"In a Mar ch 14 letter , Wiesenthal Center Direc tor Or. Ge r ald Ma r golis demanded that the Ger man Quar te r ly publish a 'complete re ­tract i on of the ad and a repUdiation (sic) of the Inst itu te for Historical Review. The Simo n Wiese ntha l Cente r consider s the inclu­sion of this advertisement in your signifi-cant pUblication to be offensive and an un ­wholesome statement to the academic community •• "

Accor ding to the Wiesenthal Center pub­lication Socialactionupdate (Spring/Summer issue), Mr. Margolis also demanded that the German Quarterly take the necessary steps to "remove the sheen of academic legitimacytl that it had bestowed on these linea - nazi apologists.lI

It is not reported what questions or answers to the "Holocaust" tales were so dis­turbing to the Wiesenthal Center, but in any case the German Quarterly clicked its heels together, bowed, and in the time honored man­ner of Hollywood Germans, whimpere d that any journal that accepts an ad for any book that "questions" Holocaust history should be moral­ly condemmed. "

So the Simon Wiesenthal Center had done its real job once again, successFully suppres­sing a book without addressing its contents, which I suppose is the goal of successful book suppression everywhere .•

I wrote to Or . Margolis asking if the Wiesenthal Center would p r ovide me with a statement of its policy regarding censorship and the right of free inquiry but of course he's stonewalling me . The Center has a policy on censorship al r ight, but it isn't going to put it into writing.

It must be understood here that what is being called immoral and indecent is a historical persepctive that does not agree with that of the Canadian branch of the Anti-DeFamation League.. 00 yo/u won­der how such an event could come to pass?

When Elie Wiesel gave his famous lec­ture at Northwesten University he described Butz, without once addressing the content of ButzTs book, as lTinsensitive and de­ranged ••• heinous ••• vicious •• .• ugly ••• inhuman ••• morally deranged ••• ob­scene" and so on. After hundreds of such lectures as Wiesels', hundreds of such books, press releases, articles and news stories re­peating over and over again: Obscene, ob­scene, obscene - with never a publisher, never an editor or reporter attempting to substantiate any charge or claim, this is what we end up with. One more government banning a scholarly historical study be­cause it is "immoral" and "indecent."

The 8utz book is not banned in the United States, it is simply suppressed through the collusion of Holocaust cult­ists demanding that the press accept no 2dvertisements for "revisionist" studies

and press management supinely acquiescing to those demands. The question For jour­nalists to pose to press management and cultists alike is this one:

"What is it precisely that everyone is so aFraid of? What is it?"

Here in Los Angeles, meanwhile, the Herald Examiner recently published an edi­torial (14 August 1984) wherein it bravely defends the right of free speech against the plan of a city councilman and some wo­men's groups to adopt a law allowing women to sue pornographers for violating their civil rights,. The editorial reads in part:

" •• .• we deny that one person may in­fringe on another's First Amendment rights simply because she (or he) dislikes some­thing that has been written, printed or produced •• -. The Bill of Rights makes no exception for bad taste •••

"Smut peddlers must enjoy the same freedom as Noble Prize winners.1!

Prima Facie agrees with the courageous Los Anqeles Herald Examiner. So, whereas . it is agreed among Holocaust cultists that 8utz's Hoax of the 20th century is indecent and obscene, and whereas the ~erald Examiner regularly runs advertisements for dirty movies, the paper should have no objection to publishing advertisements for the Butz book.

To that point, I am making myself the local agent representing .Butzts Hoax, and I will submit my display ad to the Herald Examiner as soon as possible. In the un­likely event that the courageous daily re­fuses the ad on some grounds other than ob­scenity, I will ask that those grounds be explained to me, and report to you next month what I am told they are.
