THE ROLE OF IRONY IN PRIDE AND PREJUDICE

What does emerge in Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice is undoubtedly the irony of theme, situation, character and narration. Here, irony is the contrast between appearance and reality. As one goes through Pride and Prejudice, one can observe of the ironic significance that pride leads to prejudice and prejudice invites pride. Each has its virtues and each has its defects. They are contradictory and the greatest irony is that complexity brings risks unknown to simplicity. However, Jane Austen’s use of irony does not represent any cynicism or bitterness to draw satirical realities; rather this technique can be interpreted as comic. It depicts her acknowledgement of what is wrong with people and society.
