The Top stories in Medicine in the last 100 years

Mark D. aronson, MD, MaCP Professor of Medicine Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center

sanjiv Chopra, MD, MaCP Professor of Medicine Harvard Medical School

Drs Chopra and Aronson will cover the greatest discoveries and scientific advances in the last 100 years. All scientific breakthroughs come in fits and starts. The stories behind the discovery of drugs such as penicillin and statins; the discovery of vaccines for polio and hepatitis B; the control of HIv, the greatest of all plagues, with HAART therapy; the cure of diseases such as hepatitis C; the history of how the birth control pill came about; and advances in cardiology, such as the development of the pacemaker for complete heart block, have not only changed medicine forever but also make for fascinating tales that combine serendipity with brilliant science.

Core curriculum developed and presented by Harvard Medical School.

ibM’s watson: solutions to Transform the Future of Health CareJosko silobrcic, MD, MPH, Ms Experienced health care leader, advisor, clinician, educator, and researcher

IBM’s Watson captured the imagination of more than 34 million viewers when it beat the all-time champions of the uS game show Jeopardy! To do so, it navigated the complexities of human speech, churned through 200 million pages of unstructured data in less than three seconds, and delivered a confidence-based response, all while learning and getting smarter with each outcome. IBM is working with leading health care organizations to put Watson to work. Join Dr Josko Silobrcic in an engaging discussion of how IBM’s Watson can assist you in gathering the information you need to make informed, evidence-based diagnoses and treatment recommendations.

should Medical Professionalism include advocacy?

Holly atkinson, MD, FaCP Physician, Tv personality, medical columnist, author, human rights leader, and experienced CEo—expert at helping people make meaningful change in their lives and in their communities

Dr Atkinson has a medical degree from the university of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and an MS degree in journalism from the Columbia university Graduate School of Journalism, and she graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Colgate university with a BS in biology. She is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the American Medical Women’s Association.

In this provocative and inspirational keynote address, Dr Atkinson asks, “Should advocacy be part of medical professionalism?” She explores how collective medical advocacy works today, why it is so important in advancing health and human rights, and how physicians can actually “do” advocacy. Dr Atkinson presents the case history of one hugely successful advocacy campaign—the International Campaign to Ban Landmines—in which physicians played a central role and which has had a stunning impact on protecting life and limb around the globe.

HiGHliGHTED lECTurEsThe Course Development Committee of Harvard Medical School has developed a curriculum designed to bring you the studies, insights, and solutions that will make a significant impact on your daily practice and improve patient care. Choose from more than 55 clinically relevant talks, including these innovative lectures.

NovEMBER 16, 2012 | SESSIoN 6A | 1:30 – 2:30 pm

new Drugs for the Primary Care Provider: what you need to knowKeeping up with the many new drugs introduced each year is a constant challenge. However, only a small number of these drugs are novel, work by a new mechanism, and are relevant for primary care practice. This talk will provide a balanced evaluation of potentially important novel drugs in the pipeline and will address comparative efficacy, side effects, and impacts on primary care practice.

NovEMBER 17, 2012 | SESSIoN 11A | 2:50 – 3:30 pm

Childhood obesity and Type 2 Diabetes yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow: The ToDay study resultsThe epidemic of childhood obesity, which affects a third of the pediatric population, has led to the increased occurrence of type 2 diabetes in youth. This talk will provide an overview of pediatric obesity and type 2 diabetes, with a particular focus on the largest study to date of type 2 diabetes in youth—the NIH-funded, multicenter ToDAy Study.

NovEMBER 17, 2012 | SESSIoN 12A | 2:50 – 3:30 pm

understanding the Medicare annual wellness visitsAs we enter the era of primary care redesign, we need to understand the building blocks used for the determination of productivity and compensation. In this presentation, Dr Goodson will discuss the health promotion and illness prevention services that we in primary care can employ with our patients, focusing specifically on the Medicare Annual Wellness service codes, the long-standing Welcome to Medicare service code, and the new post-discharge care reconciliation service code that will be available for Medicare patients in 2013.

NovEMBER 17, 2012 | SESSIoN 10B | 5:20 – 6:00 pm

Menopause: an update for 2012More is known than ever before about the physiology of menopause, but controversy about appropriate treatment of menopausal symptoms continues. This lecture provides an update on new findings related to the natural history and physiology of menopause, new evidence on the benefits and risks of hormone therapy and nonhormonal alternative treatments for symptomatic postmenopausal women, and practical issues in prescribing and monitoring therapy.

NovEMBER 18, 2012 | SESSIoN 16 | 1:30 – 2:30 pm

End-of-life Care: listening to the PatientEnd-of-life care is one of the most difficult and stressful yet needed support services provided by primary care practitioners to patients and their families. This lecture will provide you with approaches to support patients and their families at the end of life and will review evidence related to advance directives, end-of-life decision making, palliative care, and hospice care.
