The film is an adaptation of the first part of the Trilogy by Henryk Sienkiewicz, which tells the story of the great passions - love and hate, jealousy and lust for power. In the Eastern Borderlands in the seventeenth century between the Republic and the Cossacks war is coming. The soldier squadron Prince Jeremi Wiśniowiecki (Andrzej Seweryn) – Jan Skrzetuski (Michał Żebrowski), returns from the Crimea and accidentally frees the hands of thugs commander of the Cossacks, Bohdan Khmelnytsky (Bogdan Stupka). Returning to Łubnie helps Helena Kurcewiczówna (Izabella Scorupco) and falls in love with her. He doesn’t know, that the woman was already promised to another man, Bohun (Aleksandr Domogarov)
