RETURN TO CEBU - IN JAPAN

After 6 months of furlough, mostlyspent with West Seattle ChristianChurch, time came for me to returnto work in Cebu, Philippines. Myreturn trip began with a flightfrom Seattle to Tokyo on Apr. 16-17.

I was met at the Tokyo/Narita Airport by Bill Turner, beginning sev-s-ral days of good fellowship withhim and his wife, Betty,

I preached for the Machida CityChurch of Christ, where Bill andBetty minister. An added blessingto me was meeting my Christian hamradio friend, Takashi Hirasaki,("Taka," JSICFQ), and then havinghim translate my message about theresurrection of our Lord.

Turners and I drove to Osaka, wherewe joined Martin and Evelyn Clarkand other missionaries plus manyJapanese brethren in rememberingHarold Cole's beginning classes inOsaka Bible Seminary exactly 50years before, on April 21, 1937.It was a grand occasion.

I spoke to OBS Chapel, translatedby Seimin Sugiyama-san, a fellowstudent with me at the "other" CBS.

I enjoyed renewing acquaintancesin Japan, some whom I had not seensince the Traveling College wasthere in 1973.

RETURN TO CEBU - AT CONVENTION

On 23 April I flew from Osaka,Japan, to Manila, Philippines, where I was met by Dennis McKinneyand Mike and Liz Carman. Next daywe drove to Pi la, Laguna, to attendthe 78th National Convention of theChurches of Christ in the Philippines , 24-26 Apri1.It was a good convention. Estimates of attendance were in the2000-3000 range. Convention speakers and workshop leaders includedboth Filipino and non-Filipino, including missionaries and visitorsfrom America and Australia. Ateach main session there was a message in one of the Philippine dialects .

For me, it was good to see my CBSquartet kids do a good job at singing 3 songs as a double quartet.

Fellowship was a big part of thisconvention, as it is at the NACC.I met many friends from all overthe Philippines. I am glad I wasthere.

Now, I must get to work at preparing to teach in Cebu Bible Seminarybeginning 8 June, We anticipatean increased enrollment, perhapsas many as 70. It will be good toagain be in class with these fineFilipino young people. With love,

    Walt Prevost

P.S. While at "McKinney Hotel" inManila, I met Chris McKinney. Ihope to become better acquaintedwith him as we have opportunitiesto be together.

    WSCC & FEEDING PROGRAHS

A recent "Did You Know" item in "The Friendly Visitor" reported the giving of the Vsand 5's and the Middler/junior Departmenttoward the feeding programs here. Thatcaused me to realize that a more completereport of WSCC's giving to feeding programsshould be given.

The children of WSCC have been giving regularly to the Feeding Program since January1985. Earlier It was Junior Church; latelyit has been the Vs and 5's and the Mid-dlers/Juniors. These children's offeringshave totaled $^9-96. This is an exampleof children helping children.

In addition, there are adult members ofWSCC who also regularly give to the feedingprogratJS. All of these funds are beinggiven here to the Harvesters' Mission, oneof several such groups which regularly havefeedings. The total WSCC giving for thefeeding programs during 1\ years has surpassed $1500, or about $50 per month. Thesefunds are being used to help the childrenphysically and, indirectly, to lead themand their parents to Christ.

Often, when I have given the money to theFeeding Program workers, the response hasbeen, "Thank you, Lord!" I add my thanksto the Lord, and to the children and othersof WSCC who continue to give generously tothis worthy work for Christ. With love,

    Sept. 15, 1914 - Aug. 31, 1987

Alvin Ray Carlson, veteran missionary in Cebu, Philippines, died onAugust 31, 1987, in Cebu City atthe age of 72. Intending to go toTibet, Ray & Imogene Carlson settled in Cebu in early 1941 to awaitmore stable political conditionsin Tibet. The Cebu locations became permanent as they establishedCebu Christian Mission in 1941,survived the Japanese occupationof the Philippines during WorldWar II, and founded Cebu BibleSeminary in 1947. Both Ray andImogene are graduates of CincinnatiBible Seminary. To a large degree, the Churches of Christ in the Vis-ayan Region of the Philippines result from the work of the Carlsons.Perhaps the greatest legacy of RayCarlson's 46 years in Cebu is CebuBible Seminary, presently enjoyingits largest enrollment ever at 72.Survivors include his widow, Imogene; sister, Corrine Hovda; sons,Mark Robin, Larry, and Ted; sevengrandchildren, and one great-grand-child.

I consider it an honor and a blessing to be a co-worker of the Carlsons here in Cebu. Will you praywith me that the work Carlsons haveaccomplished here will continueand that there will be many morefruit resulting from their labors?

    With love - Walt
