Maintenance / RepairAllow only qualified personnel to perform the procedures described in thisdocument. Work should only be carried out on a completely depressurizedsystem, following all safety procedures.

WARNING: Some voltage is still present in the control cabinet even afterequipment has been turned off at the main switch. Complete the followingsteps prior to maintenance or repair:

 Disconnect external power supply.

 Lock out external power supply.

 Check no voltage is present.

 Ground and short.

 Cover nearby live sections.

Secure pneumatically- and hydraulically-operated equipment againstuncontrolled movement.

 Only use genuine Nordson parts.

Liquid AdhesiveNOTE: Depending on the configuration of the liquid adhesive applicationsystem, high pressure may remain between application head and pressureregulator or pump even after the system has been switched off using themain switch or the emergency stop. This especially applies to multi−hoseconfigurations between pumps and application heads.

Prior to maintenance and repair work it is therefore essential to ensurethat all liquid adhesive application system components aredepressurized as follows:

1. Release input pressure in front of pump by shutting off customercompressed air supply.

2. Release any remaining system pressure behind the pumps bymanually operating the application heads.

 Switch off system electrically.

If liquid adhesive application system is left idle for extended periods (e.g.overnight or long breaks) Nordson recommends applying Vaseline to theapplication head nozzles to prevent them from drying out and becomingblocked as a result.

Hot Melt Material Follow the specific instructions provided in this manual to relieve the

system pressure in the entire unit.

Always use tools with insulated handles when removing or installingcomponents.

CleaningNOTE: Always refer to the manufacturer’s Material Safety Data Sheet ormaterial information sheet before working with any cleaning fluids.

WARNING: Never clean any aluminum part or flush any system usinghalogenated hydrocarbon fluids. Examples of common halogenatedhydrocarbons are: dichloromethylene, 1,1,1-trichloroethylene, andperchloroethylene. Halogenated hydrocarbons may react violently withaluminum parts.

WARNING: Fire, open flame, and smoking are prohibited when cleaningfluids are used. Observe all explosion prevention regulations. Cleaningfluids may only be heated using temperature-controlled andexplosion-protected heaters.

Never use an open flame to clean the system or its components.

Ensure sufficient room ventilation to draw off vapors.

Liquid Adhesive Check that (warm) water can be used to clean the liquid adhesive

system components, possibly with the addition of householdwashing−up liquid. If this is not possible, use only the cleaning fluidstated in the liquid adhesive manufacturer’s information. If themanufacturer recommends heating the cleaner, note the flash point.

Disposal must be according to the waste key in the DIN Safety DataSheet. Liquid adhesives or residue, solvent or separating agents mustnot be released into open waterways. In the case of a leak or spillage, contain liquid and if necessary use an absorbant material e.g. sawdustto soak it up; then proceed according to the relevant waste disposalregulations.

If the liquid adhesive application system is to be idle for an extendedperiod, the entire system should be flushed and outlets sealed withVaseline. Warm water is usually used to flush application systems withwhich water based liquid adhesives are processed.

If the liquid adhesive manufacturer specially recommends a flushingagent, the manufacturer’s safety and disposal details must be followed.

Hot Melt Material Use only cleaning fluids designed or intended to be used with the hot

melt material being used in the unit. Never use paint fluids under anycircumstances.

Note the flash point of the cleaning fluid used. Only use a controlledheating method to heat fluids.

Liquid AdhesivesAs there is a wide variety of liquid adhesives available with differentcompositions and characteristics, it is impossible here to give an exhaustivelist of safety notes reflecting the typical characteristics of liquid adhesives. The use of liquid adhesives in Nordson’s liquid adhesive applicationsystems therefore requires reference to the liquid adhesive manufacturer’sdocuments beforehand.

Information relating to safety aspects e.g. concerning solvent content, hazards and countermeasures in the event of liquid adhesive coming intocontact with skin or mucous membranes are contained in the technical datasheets and the DIN Safety Data Sheets from the manufacturer.

NOTE:

It may be necessary to refer to the manufacturer’s notes on the use ofmaterials from a third party. These may be required for processing aliquid adhesive, but hazards arising from their use are not necessarilymentioned by the manufacturer of the liquid adhesive.

Liquid adhesives may still give off vapors when they are processedcorrectly. The smell produced can cause some annoyance. This isespecially true where liquid adhesives are used that contain solvent, thus requiring the use of breathing equipment e.g. a filter.

If the prescribed processing conditions are not followed, harmfuldecomposition products may develop. Therefore, the vapors must beremoved.

Wash hands well before breaks and when work is finished.

If liquid adhesive comes into contact with eyes or mucous membranes, rinse well with water − especially the eyes. Change damp clothes, andseek medical advice if it is swallowed.

If solvents or separating agents are used to process a liquid adhesive, follow the safety and disposal information from the manufacturer.

Thermoplastic Hot Melt MaterialNOTE: Always refer to the material manufacturer’s Material Safety DataSheet (MSDS) or material information sheet before working with any hotmelt material.

Ensure the work area is adequately ventilated.

Do not exceed recommended processing temperatures. Doing socreates a danger to personnel due to decomposition of the material.

Action in the Event of a MalfunctionIf a system or any equipment in a system malfunctions, shut off the systemimmediately and perform the following steps:

Disconnect and lock out system electrical power. Close hydraulic andpneumatic shutoff valves and relieve pressures.

Identify the reason for the malfunction and correct it before restarting thesystem.

Section 2Description

Intended UsePressure controllers in the series LA 302 can be used to control proportionalpressure control valves and/or glue application pumps for Nordson liquidadhesive guns. They are designed to process cold glue and hot meltadhesive. The two integrated outlets for electropneumatic adhesive gunsallow continuous gluing. LA 302 units can be combined with Nordsonpattern controllers for intermittent gluing.

NOTE: Cold glue and other adhesives are referred to as glue in thismanual. The pressure controller is referred to as controller.

Unintended Use - Example -The unit may not be operated in a potentially explosive atmosphere.

Residual RisksWARNING: Do not touch the contacts after disconnecting the mains plug.Capacitive charge from the electronic components causes the controller toretain residual voltage, which could result in a slight electrical shock uponcontact. The capacitive charge is discharged after approx. 60 seconds.

WARNING: Glue escapes from the adhesive gun when the solenoid valvesare triggered. Risk of splashing. Wear safety goggles. Do not programduring adhesive gun assembly.

The risk is particularly high during:

 Production machine startup

 Reverse mode

 Manual mode

Description2-2

P/N 7119797A 2006 Nordson CorporationLA 302Issued 06/06

IntroductionThe LA 302 is a user-friendly pressure controller that controls proportionalpressure control valves and/or glue application pumps as a factor of themachine speed and that triggers electropneumatic adhesive guns forcontinuous gluing.

The unit is operated with easy-to-use switches and potentiometers inconjunction with LEDs and a four-digit seven-segment display.

Updated Bill of MaterialPlease observe that your Nordson equipment may differ slightly from thatdescribed in the manual or certain information provided in it. Refer to theupdated Bill of Material which is packed with your equipment.

Description of FunctionsThe following principle drawing demonstrates gluing with the LA 302.

Adhesive is to be applied to a substrate (9). The production machine, alsocalled the parent machine, transports the substrate on a conveyor beltunder the liquid adhesive gun (6). When the production machine hasreached the minimum speed, the LA 302 begins gluing.

NOTE: In general, a production machine refers to a machine in whichNordson equipment for adhesive application is integrated (e.g. a packingmachine). The term means the same as ”parent machine”, which mayappear in other Nordson literature.

A gear box mechanically links the encoder (4) to the production machinetransport equipment. The encoder is needed to determine the parentmachine speed, and it supplies a pulse for each mm of the covered path.

When the production machine has reached the set minimum speed, thesolenoid valve on the adhesive gun switches, allowing the constantcompressed air to enter the adhesive gun and the nozzle to open.

Depending on the speed of the production machine, current of 0 to 20 mA issupplied to the proportional pressure control valve (2). The current causesthe position of the diaphragm in the adhesive pressure regulator (12) tochange. The glue in the container (13) is fed to the adhesive pressureregulator (12) by the pump. The glue reaches the adhesive guns (6) witheither low or high pressure, depending on the diaphragm setting.

Operation 4-5

P/N 7119797A 2006 Nordson Corporation LA 302Issued 06/06

Switching from Automatic to Manual Mode (Mode Switch B)Mode switch (B) is used to switch to the following modes:

Position Meaning

Left Automatic operation:Pressure controller operates with the set values.

Center No operation:Pressure is being controlled, but any pneumatic valvesconnected are not being controlled. Since the nozzles donot open, no glue flows out. This position is useful e.g.when filling material, etc.

Right Manual mode:Adhesive guns open and glue flows out. Pressure iscontrolled even when the production machine speedchanges. This switch position is intended to be used fortesting purposes.

Fig. 4-7

Display / LEDsA 7-segment display and 5 LEDs serve as the display elements.

DisplayThe display serves:

To indicate the production machine speed

To indicate the minimum speed (in setting mode)

To indicate minimum and maximum pressure for the proportionalpressure control valves (in setting mode).
