The Maharishi University of Management President’s Office (641) 472-8194 is a reliable source for current Vedic usage or trademark and service marks policies.

Use of terminology evolves. Feedback is appreciated. This document was prepared by Dara Llewellyn, in Adobe Caslon Pro font, Adobe CS5.5, January 2012 and updated by Jim Karpen in CS6, April 2014. Email [email protected] or [email protected].

Important Usage Guidelines

Maharishi quote: A photocopy of the previously published source for any Maharishi quote to be printed MUST accompany the job materi-als, so that the proofreader can verify accuracy.Maharishi’s naMe with quote: Set Maharishi’s name on the last line of the text of a Maharishi quote, not beneath the quote. In every case, Maharishi’s name should be preceded by a long (em) dash (—). It may be necessary to reformat to achieve these requirements. If a year of publication is included, it should follow Maharishi’s name in paren-theses.Maharishi’s full naMe: If using the full name Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, it is not necessary to include the words His Holiness before the full name in all instances, but this may be done when it seems appro-priate.Maharishi’s naMe at the end of a line of text: Never hyphenate Maharishi’s name at the end of a line of text.reference to a grant or donation: Any time a grant to the Uni-versity is referred to in printed text, that reference must first be reviewed by the director of the Sponsored Programs Office. Any time a donation to the University is referred to in printed text, that reference must first be reviewed by either Sandra or Nick Rosania, executive directors of Institutional Advancement.reference to a university url: Any time a University URL (web-site address) is referred to in printed text, that reference must first be reviewed by the University webmaster.equal opportunity in student Materials: Be sure the following statement appears on all student recruiting posters and documents: Maharishi University of Management is an Equal Opportunity Insti-tution. For a full description of our nondiscrimination policy, go to www.mum.edu/RelId/618418/ISvars/default/Nondiscrimination.htm.equal opportunity in staff Materials: Be sure the following state-ment appears on all staff recruiting posters and documents: Maharishi University of Management is an Equal Opportunity Employer. For a full description of our non discrimination policy please go to http://www.mum.edu/RelId/618418/ISvars/default/Nondiscrimination.htm.Single space: Use only one space after all punctuation, including after

m u m p r e s s s t y l e g u i d e 2 0 14

4

periods. Be sure to check text to eliminate double spaces.hyphen and dashes: Use a hyphen (-) for compound words and word division, and for scores (e.g., 84-75 as this does not reflect a range). Use a short (en) dash (–) for inclusive numbers, such as 8:30–9:00 p.m., and 8–9 years. Use a long (em) dash (—) for thought separations in text, such as “The Ramayana — a great teaching tool — is now available to all.” MUM style stipulates that spaces be place on either side of an em dahs. A hyphen, not a short (en) dash, is used for number separations in telephone numbers, compound zip codes, and social security numbers.sMart quotes and apostrophes: Always use curved “smart” quotes (“”) and curved “smart” apostrophes (’), never straight ones.Black ink signatures: Be sure to use solid black ink when the image of your signature will be scanned for use in a large printing of letters. Black ink prints much more clearly than blue ink.ellipses: We do not use the ellipsis key. Instead, we type periods with spaces around them (e.g., “word . . . word”). In the case of an ellipsis at the end of a sentence, use four periods instead of three.Spell check: Please use the spell check feature.coMMas in a series: Place a comma before the “and” that precedes the last entry in a series (e.g., dogs, cats, and mice).angle Brackets: Angle brackets may be used to enclose a <website> or an <e-mail address>.physics terMs: Terms from physics that have previously been capitalized are now lower-cased. These include unified field, unified field of natural law, natural law, laws of nature, and nature.Other movement terms now lower-cased: Terms that have sometimes been previously capitalized, such as pure consciousness and pure intelligence, should be lower-cased (and should not be italicized unless being referred to and discussed as words).states of consciousness: States of consciousness are considered proper names and should be capitalized. These include Transcendental Consciousness, Cosmic Consciousness, God Consciousness, Unity Consciousness, Brahman Consciousness, and Total Knowledge (synonymous with Brahman Consciousness).graMMar: University publications always use American rules for grammar, mechanics (punctuation, capitalizations, etc.), and usage.use of “dr.” with naMes: The usage “Dr. John Smith” for anyone

m u m p r e s s s t y l e g u i d e 2 0 14

5

with a doctorate is unconventional. In addition, it may sound affected and may suggest a certain insecurity. Plus, it tends to create a class of people, which conflicts with the egalitarian sentiment in the US. Use John Smith the first time the person’s name is used and then Dr. Smith on subsequent references. The exceptions are Dr. Bevan Morris and Dr. John Hagelin, since “Dr.” has become a de facto part of the name by convention.“u.s.” vs “us”: While either spelling is accepted, the use of “US” is recommended by the Chicago Manual of Style. University publications should standardize on “US.” When used as a noun, spell out “United States” rather than using the abbreviation.use of “ladies”: Due to complaints about the idiosyncratic use of “ladies” to refer to “women,” the latter term is now preferred. Discontinue the use of “ladies.”ChiCago Manual of Style: For all style and usage questions not explicitly covered here, please refer to the Chicago Manual of Style.

Sanskrit TermsCurrent Usage

Spelling, Capitalization, Diacritical Marks

April 2014

Our Sanskrit terms usually are capitalized and italicized in text. Forinstance, Baikharī, Madhyamā, Pashyantī, and Parā.

Exceptions include Ṛishi, Devatā, Chhandas, Samhitā, Vāta, Pitta,Kapha, Dosha, and names of the aspects of the Vedic literature, such as Ṛk Veda, etc., which are capitalized but not italicized.

Names, like Rāma, are also capitalized but not italicized.

When we use Sanskrit phrases or sentences, usually only the firstword is capitalized. For instance, Yogasthaḥ kuru karmāṇi.

The correct spellings for the 40 aspects of the Vedic literature areset forth in this list of Sanskrit terms, at Veda and Vedic Literature.

Accreditation Statement

This is the correct wording for stating the University is accredited:

Maharishi University of Management is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (www.ncahle.org, 312-263-0456).

Guidelines

Say accredited, not fully accredited. The NCA does not partially accredit.

Do not say any particular program is accredited.

Do not say the University is accredited to any particular level, e.g., “to the doctoral level.” The NCA accredits the entire University, not particular programs or levels of degrees.

Guidelines for the Legend and Guidelines for Trademark Usage

Note: The general rule is that only documents, websites, andvideotapes which are considered “published” require trademarksymbols and a legend. Posters, advertisements, and fliers andpostcards are published and therefore require trademark symbolsand a legend. If a poster is destined for the Golden Domes only, then it may not require trademark symbols and a legend. Letters to asingle addressee are not considered “published” and therefore do notrequire trademark symbols and a legend.

The LegendIn press publications, the legend is a sentence or more in which westate our legal right to use the symbols found in the publication. Thelegend contains only those service marks, trademarks, and tradenames actually used in the publication. A Sample legend formatfollows.

Sample Legend FormatFor instance, if the document contains the terms TranscendentalMeditation®, TM-Sidhi®, Maharishi University of Management,Consciousness-BasedSM, and Maharishi Sthāpatya VedaSM, then thelegend would be:

Transcendental Meditation®, TM-Sidhi®, Maharishi University ofManagement, Consciousness-Based, and Maharishi SthāpatyaVeda are protected trademarks and are used in the United States underlicense or with permission.

Note: In University publications, the legend immediately followsthe copyright notice. In the event that a copyright notice is not used, the legend is placed near the front of the publication, usually at thebottom of the first page.

In one-page or smaller advertisements, the legend is placed at the bottom. The legend can be put in smaller type than the rest of the text. We no longer use the® symbol at beginning of the legend. The ®

m u m p r e s s s t y l e g u i d e 2 0 14

37

symbol is used in the legend after each registered mark. Note that the unregistered service marks do not have the SM mark following them.

Empty Legend Format, with Copyright© 2011 Maharishi University of Management._________________®, ________________®, _______________®,__________________®, ______________, and _____________are protected trademarks and are used in the United States under license or with permission.

Empty Legend Format, without Copyright© 2011_____________®, ________________®, _____________®,_________________®, _______________, and ____________are protected trademarks and are used in the United States under license or with permission.

Note: Be sure to include only those service marks, trademarks, andtrade names actually used in the publication.

Definition of Legend TermsMaharishi University of Management Press uses four kinds oftrademarks in the legend:

® Registered service marks (educational services) or registered trademarks (products);SM Common law service marks (educational services, not yet registered);™ Trademarks (products, exclusive rights, not yet registered); and Trade names (no symbol, but must be included in legend).

Application of GuidelinesThese trademark guidelines for using symbols and legendsapply only to documents, websites, and videotapes which areconsidered “published.” Letters to a single addressee are notconsidered “published” and therefore do not need to use symbolsand legends.

Placement of Trademark SymbolDisplay the symbol once per trademark per document, at thefirst usage in either in the title or text. Thereafter, the trade mark or service mark term should be italicized only in titles, headings, or subhead, but the mark itself is not included.

Trademarks Capitalized, Followed by Lowercased NounsTrademarks are capitalized adjectives, followed by lowercasednouns. [Example: “the Maharishi JyotishSM program”] Occasionally, trademarks stand alone without a following trailer noun. [Examples:“Maharishi Vedic ScienceSM” and “Maharishi Vedic Approach toHealthSM”]

Lowercased Trailer Nouns Should Be Connected to the ServiceA wider variety of trailer nouns, such as center, teacher, meditator, newsletter, and research, can now be used. The trailernoun, however, should be intrinsically connected with the service insome way, expressing:

• The service itself (Transcendental Meditation program, technique, practice, instruction, newsletter).

• A location where it is provided (Transcendental Meditationcenter).

• A person trained in practice or teaching of the service (Tran-scendental Meditation meditator, teacher).

• An organization providing the service (TranscendentalMeditation club).

• A product produced with the service (Maharishi Sthāpatya Veda® home, TM research, Fortune-Creating® house).

TM or Transcendental Meditation can occasionally be used without the trailer noun provided that the trailer noun is used most of the time in the rest of the text.

Lowercased nouns are almost always singular

Lowercased nouns following trademarks are almost always singular. There are occasional exceptions, such as: “CBESM programs.”

Capitalized Trailer Noun UsageWhen the noun following a trademark is capitalized, as ina title or text, then the trademark must be set in distinctive type, such as ALL CAPS, italics, bold, or SMALL CAPS. [Example:“the Transcendental Meditation® Center” or Maharishi PurushaProgramSM]

Trademarks Do Not Use Apostrophe STrademarks containing the name Maharishi should bewritten “Maharishi,” not “Maharishi’s.” [Examples: “MaharishiVedic ScienceSM ,” and “the Maharishi Transcendental MeditationSM program”] Do not precede any trademark with the possessive form of Maharishi’s name. Non-trademarks may be used in conjunction with the possessive “Maharishi’s.” [Example: “Maharishi’s AbsoluteTheory of Government.”]

Use Complete Trade Mark or Service MarkUse the complete service mark, without shortening it. Forexample, use “Maharishi Gandharva VedaSM ” music; do not use“Maharishi Gandharva” music.
