Subject Area Committee in Earth & Atmospheric Sciences meets at Jamia Millia Islamia to finalise Swarna Jayanti Fellowship Award 2015-16

The Subject Area Committee in Earth & Atmospheric Sciences for the award of the Swarna Jayanti Fellowship Award 2015-16 was today held at Jamia Millia Islamia.

The high level committee chaired by Prof. GVR Prasad of University of Delhi along with Prof. Talat Ahmad, a renowned Earth Scientist and Vice Chancellor, Jamia Millia Islamia met to screen candidates from leading academic institutions like IITs-Bombay, Kharagpur and Kanpur besides Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, ISRO and Dept. Of Biological Sciences, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata to finalise the award.

This prestigious fellowship was instituted by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India to commemorate India’s fiftieth year of Independence.

Under this DST scheme, a selected number of young scientists are provided with special assistance to pursue basic research in frontier areas of Science and Technology. The fellowship with a maximum duration of five years is highly competitive and scientist specific. The research support includes a fellowship of Rs. 25,000/- per month for five years in addition to the salary they draw from their parent Institution besides grants for equipment, computational facilities, consumables, contingencies, national and international travel.

The Swarna Jayanti Fellowship aims to facilitate selected scientists to pursue unfettered research in their area with freedom and flexibility in terms of expenditure as approved in the research plan. The idea behind the fellowship is to promote innovative research ideas that have a potential of making impact on R&D in the discipline.
