Market-leading hand-held PIDs part of vital equipment on board government body’s ‘firstresponder’reconnaissancevehicles

IonSciencehas recently supplied300Tigerhand-heldvolatileorganic compound(VOC) detectors to Germany’s Federal Office of Civil Protection and DisasterAssistance(BBK)wheretheyarepartofthevitalchemicalmeasurementsystemonboard ‘first responder’ reconnaissance vehicles. The hand-held photoionisationdetector (PID)was chosen for its industry-beating anti-contaminationdesign andability to provide continuous, real-time measurements reflecting the potentiallyhazardoussituation.

Inresponsetonewthreatssuchas11September2001andthefloodcatastropheof 2002, the FederalOffice of Civil Protection andDisaster Assistance (BBK)wasestablished on 1 May 2004 as part of the Federal Ministry of the Interior. Theinterdisciplinary approach of this office includes all services of civil safetyprevention and links them to an efficient protection system for the country’spopulationanditsbasicsurvivalneeds.

Eachof the300reconnaissancevehicles inoperationacrossGermanywillhaveaTiger instrument on board. The 4x4s are used to measure, trace and reportchemicalcontamination,finddebrisandtomarkandmonitorcontaminatedareas.Thecrewconsistsoffourpeople;twoqualifiedteamspervehiclecanoperateinturns.

Eachvehicle’schemicalmeasurementsystemincludesaVOCmonitorandionmobilityspectrometer.Hecontinues:“InGermany,theTigerisbecomingincreasinglyrecognisedasthebestperformingPIDonthemarket and widely used by the fire department, for example. We worked closely with BBK to fullyunderstandtheirapplicationanduniquemonitoringrequirements.TheysubsequentlychoseabespokeversionoftheTigerforitswell-proven,anti-contaminationdesignandotherkeyfeatures,includingthelatestprobewithleakproofsealthatoffersincreasedsidewaysimpactresistanceandreliability.”ISMdevelopedaninnovativeinvehicledockingstationthatchargestheTigerwhilstintransit,ensuringcontinuous real-timemeasurements that provide an accurate reflection of the potentially hazardoussituation.“Themeasurementdataisimmediatelydownloadedingraphandtableformatwiththeresultsplottedonmapstoshowpotentialevacuationareas,”Clemensconcludes.
