The exhibition Homework Une Eacutecole Steacutephanoise presents the work and background of a dozen or so young professional designers who all have in common the fact of

bull graduating at the end of the years 2000 (2007-2009)bull being almost in their thirties (28-29 years old mostly)bull working in the Saint-Etienne regionbull for the most part having been trained at the Saint-Etienne Higher School of Art and Design

The exhibition takes a sensitive look at the production of these professional designers and shows with this selection of talent how the choice of design as a major axe of regeneration for the town has been able to create a fertile breeding ground encouraging the emergence of a young generation of creators Having been trained in Saint-Etienne they chose to stay on to live and to workThe designer Eric Jourdan the curator of the exhibition and teacher at the Saint-Etienne Higher School of Art and Design (ESADSE) for over twenty years reflects on this exemplary case unique in France ldquoHow do young designers decide to remain in their original region while working throughout France This unusual situation is a challenge which has been made possible due to the particularly successful synergy with the Citeacute du design and the Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Eacutetiennerdquo These designers and many others have chosen Saint-Etienne by conviction and by a desire to participate in a collective adventure by placing their creations in a context of local development Their clients publishers and prestigious galleries (Cinna-Ligne Roset Cristalleries de Saint-Louis Petite Friture Domeau amp Peacuteregraves Souvignet) are here but also elsewhere throughout France which is proof that working in Saint-Etienne is very well perceived

Touring exhibition

An exhibition bis will travel to five regional capitals with the Design Tour 2013 The Design Tour will carry in its baggage an exhibition surface of some 100m2 One piece has been selected from each of the designer entities exhibited at the Citeacute du design to take part in the Tour Design Tour is a cultural and commercial event aimed at both a professional and a general public It is a touring and local event where all enthusiasts of design creation and an ldquoart de vivrerdquo can discover the best of young French and International creation and the latest novelties and seasonal trends exhibited in places which put design at the heart of their Territoire(s) the theme of this 2013 edition

A progressive approach relying on many actors and factors has made of Saint-Etienne a city of design that is a city where design generates economic and cultural activities employment a better quality of life and of course a new image for the region In this complex and exciting situation a number of points have already been registered the Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Eacutetienne the constant perfecting of the courses proposed by the townrsquos Higher School of Art and Design the establishment of the Citeacute du design and several concrete manifestations of design throughout the town The exhibition Homework Une Eacutecole Steacutephanoise opening soon at the Citeacute du design is part of a new and important phase What it represents is in fact a the true reflection of the actions the creations and the visible works of the young designers living and working principally in Saint-Etienne and for the most part trained at the ESADSETheir productions and the fact that they are based in Saint-Etienne show that our town has become a very promising location for these professionals and that being a designer in Saint-Etienne represents an advantage both on a national French scale and internationally I invite the public from all walks of life and in particular the young people to come and encounter design through these works of the professional designers making up the exhibition as a way forward being confirmed year after year

Having passed with honours his Higher National Diploma in Plastic Art Expression in 1988 Yann Fabegraves continued his plastic art and teaching activities at the Jean Monnet University Saint-Etienne (Art History) and at the Saint-Etienne Higher School of Art and Design ndash ESADSE (artistic teaching screen printing department) His plastic art works have simultaneously questioned photographic and pictorial practices and are now exhibited in France and in EuropeIn 2003 he took over the pedagogical coordination of the Art option at the ESADSE and then in addition that of the Design and Communication option From 2007 to 2011 he assumed the post of Director of Studies at a pivotal moment for the School the constitution of the Public Institution of Cultural Cooperation Citeacute du design ndash ESADSE the reforms linked to the Boulogne process and the strategic positioning of the School in the international sphereYann Fabegraves has been the Director of the ESADSE since 2011 His global vision of the two options art and design and its human element are at the heart of his reflections to develop structural actions for the School

ESADSE lrsquoEacutecole Steacutephanoise

The School has the particularity of being associated with the Citeacute du design within the same public institution since 2005 This association represents an important advantage for the School since it benefits from the activities and networks of the Citeacute du design exhibitions conferences and research programmes The ESADSE is also the only School of art and design to be fully involved in an event of international stature such as the Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Eacutetienne This serves as an original tool for teaching exchanges and as visibility for the School

emsp1 What distinguishes the ESADSE from other design schools

There is first of all the historical dimension of our school The design option of the ESADSE then known as the Environment option opened in 1975 and centered on urban planning and the industrial object some seven years before the creation of the ENSCI-Les ateliers The design option as it was finally called from 1990 onwards organized the Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Eacutetienne from its origins in 1998 through to 2006 when it was taken over by the Citeacute du design This structure unique in France with the presence in the same establishment of a School a Biennial and a Citeacute du design creates an environment which is conducive to the development of a form of teaching rooted in reality which has no equivalent elsewhere The inter-actions with the region the international scale of the Biennial the opportunities for the students to meet the economic and industrial sectors enables them to face up to the social and technological changes that design promotes The ESADSE should in fact not just be considered as a School of design or at least not solely since the one year art course common to all the students and the art option ensure a creative dimension in phase with the innovation which is such an integral part of design

emsp2 In your opinion what incites the students to set up in the region to pursue their profession

As I mentioned there are few regions that can pride themselves in being able to offer so many advantages for this type of activity The Citeacute du design the Biennial the town itself which has been designated a UNESCO creative city of design since 2010 a wealth of productive know-how linked to post-industrial conversion good rental facilities the presence of the collectif DESIGNERS+ are all plausible explanations for the development of this eco-system Certain of the designers that we train seek from the

emsp3 What are the training courses offered by the ESADSE

The students choose between the art and the design option after a first year of general studies At the end of the third year an initial diploma the DNAP is obtained which confirms the acquired conceptual and technical knowledge of the students in the fields both of art and design Further studies lead to a masterrsquos degree in art and design the DNSEP There are three parts to the design DNSEP object design space and information design and media design After these five years of study certain students can join the post-graduate course Design and Research which publishes the Azimuts review There are also several joint master degree courses the Public Spaces course with the Jean Monnet University and the Higher National School of Architecture of Saint-Etienne a Design prospective Masterrsquos with the Jean Monnet University and the Saint-Etienne Mines Engineering School and finally a Masterrsquos in Information Architecture with the ENS (Higher Normal School) in Lyon

emsp4 Can you cite a project undertaken at the ESADSE which has particularly impressed you

Two projects perhaps Firstly the project presented this year at the Paris Design Week in partnership with Ligne Roset It was the diploma project of Marlegravene Janin entitled Terrenoire and symbolizes for me the age of maturity for our establishment where the quality and the precision of the productions and proposals of our graduating students confirm for me that we have a come a long way over the last few years I would also quote the Whatrsquos wind drawing project from three years ago stemming from the digital centre and representing the development of a new centre of excellence within the School It consists of a series of micro wind turbines linked up by processors to incisive pantographs hellip digital poetryhellip

The Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Eacutetienne is fifteen years old and the Citeacute du design was inaugurated in 2009 These two major projects have enabled Saint-Etienne to exist in a different manner An alternative vision of the town has emerged with the perception of a lighter and more future-orientated universe One idea emerges naturally that of a town connected with the outside in phase with the world with the major metropolitan zones and the ideas and issues which traverse contemporary society Beyond an historical explanation of the links between Saint-Etienne a historical site of the industrial revolution and a reflection on design lead by the Citeacute du design it is also a question of human adventure experienced by the men and women living in their region or coming from other horizons The young designers presented in the exhibition Homework Une Eacutecole Steacutephanoise have all been actors in the Citeacute du design adventure either through their training at the School of Design or through their participation in the different design BiennialsWe can imagine that this combination of experiences from the training at the School to a participation in the research programmes organised by the workshops at the Citeacute du design or being involved in the Biennial scenography and the different exhibition committees has created a spirit an attitude leading these young designers to decide to live and work in Saint-Etienne This phenomenon of a group of designers making the choice of pursuing their profession in Saint-Etienne all of them recognized beyond the regional boundaries at a national or international level is perhaps one of the greatest successes of the ESADSE and the Citeacute du design A form of return on investment particular to Saint-Etienne which deserves to be recognized and shared

The designer Eric Jourdan was born in Paris on the 15th September 1961 He studied in the environment department at the Saint-Etienne School of Fine Arts from 1981 to 1987 and obtained his diploma at the Higher National School of Decorative Arts of Paris in 1989 He produced the sign design for the Cartier Foundation (with IRB) which subsequently commissioned him for an exhibition and the design of the press office at Cartier USA in New York procuring him international visibility In 1992 he worked on a public contract with the Minister of Culture to design furniture collections for the Museum of Indian Ocean Decorative Arts in the ReunionIn 1993 Philippe Starck invited him to join the Thomson multi-media team to work on the domestic appliances programme He worked on a further public contract in 1993 for the layout design of the Museum of Noumea in New Caledonia He then obtained a carte blanche from the VIA for a research programme on connecting furnitureHe exhibits in several Parisian galleries while developing furniture ranges for major brandsHis work is included in the Fond National drsquoart Contemporain (French National Fund for Contemporary Art) collection in Paris the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in Saint Etienne In 2013 he received the prestigious artparis design award and is the autumn guest exhibitor for a solo exhibition at the renowned Parisian gallery En Attendant les Barbares

The scenographic choices for the exhibitionIn order to promote the work at the Citeacute du design of the eleven designers at the exhibition and to highlight the influence of the ESADSE the scenography proposes eleven spaces drawn into a circle Each of the spaces develops around the centre and opens up to the outside The visitors can choose to go from one space to another from one designer to another either from the outside or through the centre where they can have a rest and contemplate the rainbow which surrounds them each space having a different colour thus accentuating the variety of the works on show and the identities of each exhibitor At the entrance to each space a portrait of the designerrsquos agency is proposed presenting their approach their projects and their main networks of production

For the Design tour each of the eleven designer entities presents a piece exhibited at the Citeacute du design As with all touring exhibitions it is necessary to transport and to present the works The principle here is to use the transport crates especially designed for the exhibition as presentation stands Eleven crates are transformed into eleven stands for eleven objects To keep the exhibition material clean during the transport coloured mats the same size as the stands with different colours attributed to each designer for the exhibition will cover the crates for each assembly at the same time as the object A portrait of the designers and descriptions of the objects will be placed on the crates printed on the same type of wood used for their construction

1 At the time the Saint-Etienne Fine Arts School opened up perspectives for us and proposed a broad programme where we could experiment with different media photography sculpture graphics and drawing We were able to try out different materials during our first years which was really useful It also allowed us time to choose our option The School taught us to look and to view things We were taught how to acquire a culture and a curiosity as well to try things out and to experiment It also taught us to construct a project to put it into place and to be able to talk about it We were able to work with people who knew how to open up our minds and also to learn from renowned professionals

2 Viewed from the outside the School today is established as a design school It seems to encourage its students and make them participate in events It has provided itself with tools and facilities which provide a certain comfort for the students

3 It was difficult for us to contemplate starting our career in Paris We wanted to stay close to nature and the countryside We had started to work together at the School and we thought about possible places where we could set ourselves up We had experienced several International Design Biennials at Saint-Etienne and we could perceive the dynamics that it generated At the time of our installation we knew that the Citeacute du design was going to be created and we imagined the different perspectives that this could open up In addition the region houses a large number of small enterprises and a know-how which provide invaluable partners for the construction of a project

Greacutegory Blain and Herveacute Dixneuf were both born in 1981 (the first in Saint-Etienne the latter in Cholet) and graduated from the Saint-Etienne Higher School of Art and Design in 2005 and 2006 They formed the Atelier BL 119 together in 2007 and directed their work towards the design of furniture and objects space design and scenography They chose to set up in Saint-Etienne for cost considerations to avoid the Capital and to remain close to the mountains and countryside The development of internet and new communication tools have all helped in their developmentAnother determining factor has been their implication in the Greenhouse association an alternative structure founded by Emmanuel Louisgrand with which they have been organizing exhibitions of contemporary art and design since 2006 In addition Greacutegory Blain and Herveacute Dixneuf work on a regular basis with the Roger Tator

Gallery in Lyon Finally the growing influence of Saint-Etienne with its Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Eacutetienne and the creation of the Citeacute du design has also played a major role in their choice of setting up in the town

1 A broader vision of our environment the possibility of experimenting freely without the constraints present in a professional context and a work methodology which I still use today The Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Eacutetienne were created during my studies which enabled me to discover the multitude of professions linked to the exhibitions My studies also allowed me to practice art

2 A School which is open to a multitude of artistic fields and practices and not only those related to design this is what can help the students to nourish their ref lections once in the professional context The freedom to be able to experiment and to move from one domain to another without taboos and without having to respect the borders between them

3 Choice was not the issue the work was there the opportunities to start up as well and now the knowledge of the region and the quality of its enterprises encourage me to stay on and develop my activity

Thomas Goux was born in Poitiers in 1978 and studied at the Saint-Etienne Higher School of Art and Design graduating in 2002 Nicolas Tourette born in Lyon in 1972 graduated from the Lyon School of Fine Arts in 1997 and completed a post-graduate diploma in 1998 Their professional collaboration began in 2004 in the context of the Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Eacutetienne where they were both scenographers They created their own structure in 2006 the Tourette amp Goux Workshop to develop activities such as artistic direction scenography sign design interior design furniture and graphics In 2012 they founded their own object and furniture publishing house HUB designeditions based in Saint-Etienne

Their reasons for setting up in Saint-Etienne were based on the proximity of major towns but also to be in the heart of a high quality and diversified

industrial region This location has enabled them to create an important network of partners and sub-contractors in a design dynamic region They are both involved in the lay-out of the reception halls and lounges the press rooms and the private boxes at the Geoffroy Guichard Saint-Etienne football stadium

1 After obtaining my Higher National Diploma in product design the programme at the School of Fine Arts provided me with a global vision of things less centered on the object and proposed a network of people from multiple horizons It brought me the opportunity to go to India during my fourth year to assume my convictions and to express them with precision Through teachers such as Eric Jourdan and Franccedilois Bauchet and a drawing approach to design I learnt the necessity of producing work which ref lects a sensibility

2 The ESADSE in 2013 has the advantage of a nationally and internationally reputed School putting down roots in a Saint-Etienne region rich in history

3 I chose to stay in the Rhone-Alps region to retain the links with my regional partners but also because of the human interest Living in Paris for me would be impossible Here I think the towns are more personal and offer a more peaceful way of life rsquo

lsquoReacutemi Bouhaniche was born in Salon de Provence in 1984 He graduated in 2009 from the Saint-Etienne Higher School of Art and Design In the same year he opened his studio in Lyon in the Creators Village and reinforced the necessary proximity with his clients Reacutemi Bouhaniche is a studio of interior design creation products furniture and scenography which proposes customized solutions for his partners gallery owners publishers private individuals enterprises and institutes

Having obtained his DNSEP he founded the label USIN-e with Amaury Poudray and began working closely with the Glanville Gallery the Gallery in Bruxelles and the Paul Bocuse Institute Since August 2011 he has been working with the Maggpie brand in India and developing new concepts of living space layouts villas and apartments in Bombay and New Delhi

1 The learning process of design within a School of art in the manner in which I was taught certainly trained me in polyvalence and in the taking of initiatives to confront the constantly changing contexts and uses which influence the creation process

2 As design practices evolved so the Saint-Etienne School of Fine Arts was able to regenerate itself and become the Higher School of Art and Design

3 I have now been working ten years as a freelance mostly in the region of the Loire department Ten years ago design was little or not well known Since then with the installation of the Citeacute du design and that of the Saint-Etienne Higher School of Art and Design and in particular with their work of raising awareness amongst the general public practices have gradually developed This is especially the case amongst the regional actors such as the small and medium sized industries specialized in sub-contracting and amongst the omnipresent associations sector and the local authorities A context in which design was not well integrated and its advantages still far from being acquired It was therefore necessary to be proactive in putting forward proposals Little by little as I acquired a better knowledge of the region I learnt to generate my own activity and to try to introduce projects to these different actors Today I continue with an open approach enriched by the tools and the know-how that this brings allowing me to develop in different fields of design such as product design graphics and space lay out design The proposals are enriched throughout the design process And in contrast to the specialist vision it allows for a particular approach which is renewed for each projectrsquo

lsquoPascaline de Glo de Besses was born in Firminy in 1978 She graduated from the Saint-Etienne Higher School of Art and Design in 2002 She created her own structure in 2004 She undertakes product design graphics and space design for enterprises private individuals and local authorities At the same time she develops more specialized research projects for furniture objects and lighting She has now been working for ten years as a free lance principally in the region of the Loire department Today she continues with an open approach enriched by the tools and the know-how that this brings allowing her to develop in different fields of design such as product design graphics and space lay out design

1 I think above all that my programme at the ESADSE taught me how to think through a project to have a critical viewpoint on the elements that surround us an analytical spirit Also to acquire a certain autonomy in the way of working

2It is clear that the inf luence of the ESADSE is increasing First of all thanks to the Citeacute du design and the various exhibitions partnerships with enterprises and the calls for project tenders that it proposesThe School is at the heart of the Biennial which represents an enormous advantage for the students both in terms of their implication in the organization of such an event and the visibility that it procures With its location it can also benefit from the large network of local companies and the wealth of know-how In this way the enterprises are sometimes more open to work with designers3 I no longer live in the region but Saint-Etienne remains my home town I have therefore a particular attachment and a constant interest in the development and increasing inf luence of the town I also continue to work with local companies to carry out my projects rsquo

lsquoPhilippine Lemaire was born in Saint-Etienne in 1984 She studied successively at the Higher School of Art and Design in Saint-Etienne and then in Reims She created her own structure of object and space design in 2009 Today she works between Paris (to be at the heart of current events and close to the publishers) and Saint-Etienne for reasons of proximity the network facilities and the diversity of the enterprises She works as a free lance in the fields of object and furniture design along with scenography or space layout design By scrutinizing contemporary ways of life she attempts to procure a sensitive approach to each of her productions A material a function or a form of production are all starting points for the development of a project

Franccedilois Mangeol was born in Creteil in 1984 and graduated from the Saint-Etienne Higher school of Art and Design in 2009He created his company ldquoMangeol Atelierrdquo in Saint-Etienne in 2007 As an independent designer and consultant in innovation and global design he also developed an activity of artistic direction He takes part in juries conferences and workshops His clients are in France and in Europe thanks to his efficient network of enterprises and clients put together during his studies and the years after Staying in Saint-Etienne as a designer was an obvious choice Having worked for industrial companies the Citeacute du design and even the School of Art and Design he wanted to capitalize on his network

1 The ESADSE for me was a field of opportunities where the relationship with the teachers was in the form of accompaniment workshops knowledge ways of behavior It is nevertheless a field which has to be seized and be conquered Through strength or by cunning for some by seduction And finally it is a lesson in life what can be learnt is always in fact to be grasped and is not simply offered

2 I knew the laquo Chacircteau raquo the old building of the School in the centre of town I appreciated the buildings which were certainly a little run-down but at the same time very easy to use With the move the School has acquired a different status a place corresponding to the status it wished to obtain When I see the technical workshops I am really enthusiastic about the work facilities for the students

3 Today I am established in Saint-Etienne because the town offers numerous possibilities and an extremely pleasant living environment There are no space constraints and there is a network of SME with know-how and easy contact The Citeacute du design also offers a very useful toolbox for the knowledge it brings in with its exhibitions and the materials resource centre rsquo

lsquoJean-Seacutebastien Poncet was born in 1982 He graduated from the Saint-Etienne Higher School of Art and Design in 2007 and continued with a year of post-graduate study

He lives and works in Saint-Etienne a town which he appreciates for its atmosphere and the proximity of the natural landscapes which contrast with the industrial imprint of its lines In a more prosaic way Saint-Etienne offers a compromise between an easy access to adapted work space and the possibilities of connections to the different professional networks He works on product and space design programming project management support sign design scenography and information design

Coming from a farming background he experienced from an early age a countryside shaped by agricultural activity This motivated a landscape based approach to design where the objects form a panorama with the places where they are sited The poetic force of these creations reflects an economy of means and questions their role as a territorial marker They form converging points of environmental flows situations and meanings communicating a vision of the metabolic functions of objects in terms of space on different levels

lsquoSO FAR SO GOOD is a multi-media and graphic creation studio opened in 2011 Two of its team members are graduates from the Saint-Etienne Higher School of Art and Design They set up in Saint-Etienne because the international dimension highlighted by the membership of the UNESCO creative cities of design network comforted them in their choice They work in the fields of graphics publishing and web sites digital media and sound design in order to propose innovative identities and concepts for private individuals institutions or companies SO FAR SO GOOD had the original idea of creating Incredibox in 2009 an application which proposes the role of a conductor of a human beatbox group

The first version of the website appeared in 2009 and some weeks later was awarded a FWA (favorite website award) an important reference in terms of web innovation Incredibox now benefits from growing global visibility and continues to be developed in 2013

1 Having passed my baccalaureat in applied arts I turned towards the Saint-Etienne School of Fine Arts (now the ESADSE) I wanted above all to explore different artistic fields and not to be restricted to a sole discipline The choice of going to the ESADSE was inf luenced by positive exchanges and meetings at the Biennale Internationale design saint-Eacutetienne by visiting the facilities but also by its reputation and location The ESADSE allowed me in particular to develop an artistic curiosity to broaden my knowledge of design and to understand the interest of collaborative work on a shared project

2 Thanks to the quality of its teaching the ESADSE has become a major nationally renowned School in the region Every year it trains future designers who go on to join agencies or decide to set up as independent designers

3 The willingness of Saint-Etienne to become a member of the UNESCO creative cities of design network has encouraged designers to set up in the region An attachment to a town in the throes of major change over the last years and its ambition to become the capital of design have helped to confirm my decision to set up in the Saint-Etienne region rsquo
