1 Background
People with Down Syndrome often lack of educational or professional opportunities, since the
training programmes are insufficient, and limited by the availability of dedicated teacher-
researchers or university spaces.
The approach in SUSKIDS used goes beyond the traditional teaching and learning approach,
using a psychological perspective based on the acquisition of new habits through game-based
learning, social media, and self-engagement, in the particular field of construction using waste
materials.
2 Consortium
2.1 University of Burgos (UBU) University of Burgos (UBU) leads the SUSKIDS project as Project Coordinator. The UBU
researchers collaborating in SUSKIDS project are members of the Research Group of Building
Engineering (GIIE), experts in the field of building and pioneers in the development of new
sustainable materials that use building by-products. They have taught many courses and
workshops on the topics, also aimed at children and people with intellectual disabilities.
2.2 Down Syndrome Association Burgos (ASDB) ASDB is part of FEAPS (Spanish Confederation of Organizations for People with Intellectual
Disabilities) and contributed to the founding of FEISD (Spanish Federation of Down Syndrome
Institutions). They offer different services and programs to help people with disabilities
achieving enough autonomy so that they can decide about their lives and they take part in
several projects focused in the education and inclusion of SD individuals in the labour market.

practitioners, contributing to the innovation in education.
2.6 Trinity College Dublin Trinity College takes part in SUSKIDS through the Civil Engineering Department, which belongs
to the Engineering School, and develops research and education in the areas of environment,
materials, structures and transportation. The Trinity College promotes inclusion through the
Trinity Centre for People with Intellectual Disabilities (TCPID), and the Trinity Access
Programmes (TAP) to support people from areas with low progression rates to higher education
offering programmes from primary school students to secondary schools and postgraduates.
2.7 University College Leuven Limburg UCLL takes part in SUSKIDS through the research group eSocialWork, which has a long-lasting
tradition in research, teaching and coaching about eHealth and other forms of online
coaching/learning, the development of online tools for persons with special needs, human
centered design and usability research and disability studies. The team involve experts
concerning students with special needs and special didactics.
3 Objectives
In short, the GENERAL OBJECTIVE is to develop tools and modules for the transference of
knowledge and skills in the field of construction and recycling to people with DS, offering them
an entertaining way to learn and to increase their autonomy and opportunities of inclusion.
Moreover, the Project has the following SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
- designing acknowledged learning and evaluation tools and guidelines to promote the
sustainability and self-care skills for DS individuals, increasing their possibilities in the labour
market and their autonomy, therefore reinforcing their inclusion and self-esteem.
-improving the skills of trainers and educators, providing them with tools and resources in
recycling and construction and the capacity to transfer this knowledge and skills to students with
Down Syndrome.
Project number: 2018-1-ES01-KA201-050639
- contacting policy makers in the field of education and promote these approaches with the aim
to involve more people with disabilities in the society;
- inviting institutions dealing with DS people to enhance digital integration and teaching skills
related with environmental sustainability.
-Developing more feasible and easier to implement Personalised learning, inquiry-based
learning, game-based learning and Project-Based Learning methodologies for DS people.
4 Results
SUSKIDS will deliver 4 Intellectual Outputs:
4.1 IO1. Toolkit for recycling skills knowledge transfer to Down Syndrome
Individuals This toolkit will provide a collection of learning materials, educational resources, methodological
guidelines and examples of Best practices in the field of teaching recycling and construction skills
to Down Syndrome individuals. It is aimed at teachers, therapists, technicians, associations and
researchers in the field of Special Education.
English. Toolkit for recycling skills knowledge transfer to Down Syndrome Individuals
Spanish: Kit de herramientas para la transferencia de conocimientos en materia de reciclaje a
personas con Síndrome de Down.
Dutch: Toolkit voor recyclingvaardigheden kennisoverdracht aan DS-personen
4.2 Virtual Learning Environment An accessible VLE designed based on the materials created for the toolkit, collected and adapted
to the capacities of SD individuals. The VLE will include different stage levels (schools, young
students, adults) according to their different skills and capacities. The platform includes a
Content Management System (CMS) that will allow teachers to customize the content the
different tools (collaboration and training tools) and activities
Planned delivery: September 2020
4.3 Course validated and recognised by the NFQ SUSKIDS will develop a Pilot Course that students participating in the Junior Cycle Level
2Learning Programmes can access as part of their programme. This course, designed for
approximately 100 h, will be aligned with Level 2 of the National Framework of Qualifications
(NFQ) in Ireland, so that learning associated with the program is fully recognised, and applicable
to other official European qualifications.
Planned delivery: January 2021
4.4 Evaluation Guidelines he objective of this task is to assemble an evaluation method for the learning material developed
in the project, aligned with Level 1 of the European Framework of Qualifications (EFQ). This will
Project number: 2018-1-ES01-KA201-050639
ensure that the students learn so that the course can be fully recognised in any country of the
European Union, thus contributing to increase the students’ self-esteem and their sense of
achievement.
Planned delivery: July 2021
4.5 Multiplier Events: Two Multiplier Events are planned during the project Lifecycle.
4.5.1 E1. Enabling professionals and families to transfer sustainable knowledge and
skills to Down syndrome individuals: SUSKIDS This one-day event was organized by UBU and ASDB will the collaboration of all other partners
and took place in Burgos on 29th January 2020. The Event consisted on a collection of seminars
and workshops in Burgos (Spain).
Toolkit was presented in different Seminars in which the Opening Seminar explained the
methodologies and theoretical approaches aimed to families, teachers for students with DS and
therapists, including the guidelines and Good Practices found in the different EU countries and
particularly those involved in the project.
Later on, a Workshop was carried out as an example, , aimed at different educational stages, in
order to transfer sustainable knowledge and skills to Down Syndrome Individuals. It was
attended by about 20 students of Colegio Estela in Burgos
Finally, a Round table was organized with the different stakeholders to discuss on the
importance of inclusion of Down Syndrome individuals and the role of educative technologies.
Further information can be found in the project blog where Videos and photos are also available
4.5.2 E2. Conference on use of technology to transfer sustainable skills to DS individuals
for the improvement of inclusion The Conference on use of technology to transfer sustainable skills to DS individuals for the
improvement of inclusion is aimed to professionals (teachers, therapists and researchers), public
representatives (legislators, policy makers in the area of education and social services), and civil
society (families, DS associations) and companies of the construction and recycling. This
Conference Even is to be held in Brussels at the end of the project (Summer 2021), organized
by UCLL.
The Event will be scheduled for two days. The first day is aimed at disseminating the project
