Setúbal Muscatel One hundred years of presence in the region

.

Management goals protect the classification of

origin of regional wines, implementing vigilance

and enforcement of related regulations, as well as

establishing Regional Wine Commissions (our

region has Setúbal Peninsula Regional Wine Com-

mission), which have a key role in preserving the

quality and prestige of the wines.

The Setúbal Peninsula is a pioneering region in

the development of wine products recognized for

quality, as is the case of Setúbal Muscatel wine, a

strong wine whose production area has been defi-

ned since 1907, despite its production age to be

much older.

Setúbal Peninsula Regional Wine Commission

The Setúbal Peninsula Regional Wine Commis-

sion (CVRPS) was founded, in association with

collective nature of private law in 1991. Its pri-

mary aim has been to ensure quality as well as

the continuity of wine heritage in the region and

the promotion of wine products.

One of the requirements for Portugal to enter

into the European Union in 1986 led to the res-

tructuring of the classification of wines produ-

ced, applicable by law to the Wine 8/85 of June 4

framework.

In less than a decade, the by-laws of wine areas

Arrábida and Palmela were published, and the

status of the designation of the region of Musca-

tel Setúbal was analyzed, which is now classified

as Setúbal DOC. In 1992 a decree is published to

include Regional wine Terras do Sado, encom-

passing the whole district of Setúbal.

In 1997, the entire wine region of Arrábida cea-

ses to exist as it is integrated into Palmela. More

recently in 2009, ordinance #695/2009 amends

that the geographical classification index (IG)

Terras do Sado is changed to IG Setúbal Peninsu-

la. CVRPS possesses control to certify the origin

and quality of DOC Palmela, DOC Setúbal and IG

Setúbal Peninsula wines.

The control of the origin and quality of wines

from its three classifications, as well as its certifi-

cation and trade promotion is done through

a careful and thorough process.

CVRPS meticulously registers all vineyard

plots, voluntarily enrolled, and check that they

are suitable for producing quality wine. Skilled

technicians closely monitor the wine making,

storage and packaging to ensure the pro-

per criterion have been fulfilled in all the phases

for certification. Physicochemical analysis are

conducted at the Wine tasters headquarters,

where it is decided if the CVRPS seal of guaran-

tee is attributed to the bottle or not.

CVRPS has been chaired by Engineer Henrique

Soares since 2009, until then secretary general

of the organization. With a Degree

in Agronomy and Business Administration, Engi-

neer Henrique Soares was, as secretary gene-

ral, responsible for the accreditation process of

CVRPS as Certificate Organization of Wines such

as DO and IG Setúbal Peninsula. As President of

the CVRPS, Henrique Soares still functions as a

member of the board of the Association of Rural

Development for the Setúbal Peninsula

(ADREPES).

Wine and vineyard cultivation in the Setúbal Peninsula

Although it has been acknowledged that the

cultivation of vineyards and wine may have been

earlier, it is certain that its arrival with the Phoeni-

cians and Greeks, after the VIII century a.C. , when

the art of winemaking, and drinking, had gained

new perspectives. Because of its location and favo-

rable conditions at present, the hillsides of Arrábi-

da certainly had a pioneering role in this sector.

The Romanization of the Iberian Peninsula contri-

buted to the modernization of the cultivation of

vineyards, with the introduction of new varie-

ties and improving of cultivation techniques. Its

consumption is later accentuated with Christianity,

which uses wine with certain religious acts.

With the Muslim occupation in the VIII cen-

tury, a new phase began in vineyard gro-

wing and wine production. Although the

Quran prohibited the consumption of alcoholic

beverages, local authorities were tole-

rant towards the Christians, allowing their produc-

tion and trade.

During the Middle Ages, between the XII and XV

century, wine was one of the main exports, benefi-

ting from the improvements introduced in the

fields by the religious orders and, from

the fifteenth century, with the Portuguese Discove-

ries, the scope of its exports were widened,

which now reaches the four corners of world. In

the XVII century, along with salt, which was

the main product exported, there are

also references (1675) to the exportation of

350 barrels of Setúbal Muscatel.

Trivia

The largest vineyard in the world

In the XIX century, the largest

undivided vineyard in the world

was located in the Setúbal Penin-

s u l a r e g i o n , w h e r e

about 4000 hectares of vine-

yards belonged to one sin-

gle producer.

Today, the occupied vineyard

area is 9,000 hectares, with 5,900

registered in CVRPS.

Muscatel S etúbal Muscatel has always been a wine with great fame, nationally and internationally. One of its great admirers was the French King, Luís XIV.

Return Trip Muscatel was largely exported to Brazil. There the wine was sold and the remaining stock was returned to Portugal. The transport was carried out on ships that crossed all of the Atlan-tic and therefore was subjected to high temperatures. When the barrels were disembarked, they noticed that the wine had beco-me more concentrated and smooth. These wines became known as return trip, because they took a trip out of Portugal and returned again.

The first wines in Portugal It is thought that wine first appeared in Portugal through the Phoenicians, especially by the estuaries of the Tagus and Sado rivers, around 600 a.C. The Phoenicians sought out metals and as a bargaining tool, offered, among other products, wine and oil amphorae.

Setúbal Peninsula

Region, Climate and Terroir

With regards to the weather, the Setúbal Peninsu-

la enjoys a subtropical and Mediterranean climate mix, influenced by the

nearby sea, the Tagus and Sado rivers and the Arrábida hillside.

In the area located next to the Arrábida hillsi-

de, predominantly found is clay-limestone soils and mild climate, an area

which is more suited for fortified wines of higher quality, the DOC Setú-

bal, which is familiar with the grape variety Muscatel Graúdo - white

wine, and grape variety Muscatel purple - red wine. This is the most promi-

nent area, located south and southwest, which extends east-

west oriented between Cape Espichel, Sesimbra, Palmela and Setúbal. With

altitudes between 100 and 500 meters, the mountains of Arrábida,

Risk, S. Luiz, and S. Francisco, are formed and scored by

huge valleys (Rasca, Picheleiros, and Almelão Alcube) and hills.

In the plains, which represents more than 80 percent of the appro-

ximately 150 000 hectares of the total area of the peninsula, the soils

are mainly sandy and the temperature ranges are higher than the first. Part of

the west coast extends to the East, with the southern boundary passing through

Azeitão, Quinta do Anjo, Palmela and Águas de Moura, and on the north

through Costa de Caparica, Alfeite, Seixal, Coin, Barreiro, Barreiro, Alcochete,

continuing on to the interior, until Montijo. It is here where the vineyard has

most expanded and the best conditions for the production of more full-

bodied red wines are found. The grape varieties Castelão are found in this area,

the ideal choice for its kind.

DO – Designation of Origin

T his designation applies to products whose originality and indivi-

duality are inseparably linked to a particular region, local or traditional name,

used to identify the wine product, taking into consideration:

Origin and production in that region or specific place.

Quality or characteristics, due to the geographical environment, natural

factors and people involved.

To qualify for a designation of origin, the entire production pro-

cess is subject to strict control in all its phases. The grape varieties used, wine-

making methods, the organoleptic characteristics are just some of

the components verified to gain qualification attributed by the Certifying Enti-

ties conducting the inspection, ensuring the authenticity and quality of the

wines.

Decree-Law No. 212/04 of August 23, art. 2.Par. a)

GI (IG) – Geographical Indications

The designation is applicable to products with a geographical

indication produced in a specific region whose name is used, make up at

least 85 percent of the grapes from that region and grape varieties which

have been previously defined. Like the wines with designation of origin, they

are controlled by a certifying entity.

DOC Setúbal

Wines with denomination DOC Setúbal, traditionally known

as Setúbal Muscatel, are produced in a geographic region residing within

the municipalities of Montijo, Palmela, Setúbal and in the parish of Castelo

which belongs to the municipality of Sesimbra.

There is also a scarce amount of Setubal Muscatel made

from the Muscatel purple grape. When young, this wine has a pinkish look, a

red-amber hue becomes apparent as the aging process progresses.

The organoleptic characteristics of these red wines, with its very limited pro-

duction, is therefore less known than white wines, characterized by a dry

and complex aroma, but nonetheless rich. Taste exceeds the expectations

created by the aroma.

T he white wines, abundant and produced from the grape variety Mos-

catel Graúdo, appear fortified and are characterized by their special aroma

quality and peculiar taste, which is unmistakable and striking. As a result of

the grape varieties and soil and climatic conditions, a golden color is appa-

rent, and as it acquires a higher intensity, its tone goes from clear topaz to

amber, while embodying an exotic floral aroma with touches of honey,

dates and orange.

DOC Palmela

The geographic area corresponding to the DOC Palmela, defi-

ned since 1997, covers roughly the same area as Setubal, therefore reaches

the municipalities of Setúbal, Palmela and even Montijo and the parish of

Nossa Senhora do Carmo Caramel, in the municipality of Sesimbra.

The production of red wines DOC Palmela represents at least two

thirds of the grape variety Castelão, included in this region are also sparkling

wines and both pink and fortified sparkling wines. The predominant grape

variety are at their best in sandy soils and, in turn, the limestone

soils are more conducive for planting white strains.

The wines are characterized by intense color, full-bodied, full aroma, domina-

ted by red fruits and spices. The white variety are predominately the grape

variety of Fernão Pires, muscatel of Setúbal and Arinto, possessing a good

structure, and an elegant and fruity aroma.

Setúbal Designation of Origin and Palmela Designation of Origin

Page 13: Press Kit CVRPS_UK

.

T he geographical area of production of the IG Setúbal Peninsu-

la covers the entire district of Setúbal. The diversity and quality of grape varie-

ties that can be used in the production of these wines leads to wines of outs-

tanding quality and with different characteristics, which meet the needs of

a wide range of consumer preferences.

The organoleptic characteristics of red wines are diverse, featu-

ring the single-grape variety, matured in or out of oak barrels, inten-

se aromas of the grape variety, which are structured, and to taste, comple-

ment the olfactory impression with good structure and evident fruit. In the

remaining combinations of grape varieties, a less structured wine is created,

with aromas of red fruits, berries, nuts and spices. To taste, they reveal them-

selves to be more or less full bodied, and/or complex with various grades

of fruity and/or spices, depending on the wine.

In regards to white wines, we can consider essentially three dis-

tinct varieties:

Predominantly Fernão Pires – as a general rule, they are characterized with

good acidity and a fruity aroma, as well as in taste.

Mostly Muscatel - sports a lush aroma of grape, with hints of fruit and flo-

wers. To taste is impressive due to its exotic flavor, where flowers

and fruits are combined in a remarkable intensity and harmony.

Fermented and/or aged in half oak barrels - well-structured wines with a

strong personality, often exhibiting complex aromas and tastes, where exotic

fruits, nuts and flowers can be distinguished.

Emblematic grape varieties

Castelão

T he Castelão grape variety is one of the most striking varieties in the

Setúbal peninsula region, occupying 75.8 percent of the vineyard

area planted with respect to red varieties. The dominant red grape variety in

the south of the Tagus and Extremadura, occupies more than half of the vine

varieties on the Setúbal Peninsula. Very productive and higher in acidity than

the wines of Trincadeira and Aragonez, it is characterized by aromatic des-

criptors such as cherries, acorns, pine nuts, currants, raspberry.

Fernão Pires (Maria Gomes)

One of the white varieties more widely spread throughout the country. It

has a noticeable level of varietal aromatic compounds (terpenes), exceeded

only by the inimitable Muscatel. Subtle acidity, it can be described sensorially

with hints of rose, lime, lychee, basil and other citrus herbs. This is one of

the most widely planted white grape varieties currently on the Setúbal Penin-

sula. The area represents 39.5 percent of white varie-

ties. Fernão Pires is recommended in the production of white wines with

designation of Pamela Origin, representing more than 90 percent of the white

wine with this designation.

Moscatel Graúdo (Moscatel de Setúbal)

There are several varieties of Muscatel in the world, all with the most

important concentration of compounds (terpene) aromatic varietals. This

variety dominates in the south, while the North utilizes the Galego Musca-

tel. The typical aromas are well known: bark and citrus blossom, honey, lime,

rose, lychees, hay and raisins. The presence of this grape variety in the region

is very significant, with about 41.5 percent of the cultivated vineyard. . Co

The Setúbal Peninsula has given a decisive contribution to the strategic thin-king of the Wines of Portugal in the coming decades, and the foundations of specialization in a few products with differentiating con-cepts (Palmela, Setúbal), of which attain the level of designation of origin and grouping of IG proposed by Setúbal Peninsula wine producers, one of the few producers with a huge economic scale and a strong capability to promo-te brands. Third place in the national consumer preferences from a small region like the Setubal Peninsula deserves a closer study of the entire order of wine

Aníbal Coutinho, Winemaker and Wine Critic, 2011

In truth, Setúbal Muscatel is the "Prince of the Muscatels" thanks to its unmatched quality, ..., unique among its peers for its delicacy and perfume, for its subtlety and longevity, its elegance and modernity, a labor of terroir of the Arrábida, Tagus and Sado rivers, the Atlantic Ocean and from the knowledge of men and women in the twenty-first century who made wine and tended their vineyards .

José António Salvador, in Setúbal Muscatel, Prince of Muscatel, ed. Afrontamento, 2010

Currently, the region has a number of players that are in a position to be clearly ack-nowledged by consumers, even when some cooperatives have shown great quality work .

Manuel Moreira, Sommelier, five time winner of the National Contest of Sommeliers, 2010
