Along the banks of the Thames & the Ganges - iBrowse 1

Scholar and researcher Nilanjana Taraphder who was the guest author at iBrowse on the 15th June shared her six years of research on the parallels between Elizabethan and Medieval Indian Literature. A wide-eyed group, of regular iBrowsers and students, despite the deafening lashing rain, against the glass panes of the Sky Lounge, tried to imbibe her PPT.

Her research uncovered the fact that at a time when Thomas Nash published the Unfortunate Traveller in 1594, Faizi the court historian of Akbar dedicated his poem Nal wa Daman to Akbar in the very same year. When William Shakespeare was composing King John in 1598, Abdul Fazl was noting down the events in Akbar’s court in a document called the Akbarnama. Through the years Nilanjana revealed to us, that when the Bible was revised for the commoners, the Ramayana was re-written by Tulsidas.

She spent long hours working in the Bodlain, which is the Oxford University Library, in London and the National Library in Kolkata, painstakingly leafing through priceless manuscripts which are kept in vaults, very like the vaults where jewels of the Maharajas and European royalty are kept.

The book for discussion is a popular book which I noticed, flying off the book shop shelves in London. “The Amazing story of the man who cycled from India to Europe for Love.” A copy can be collected from Prem in the library by the 15th of July. Least expected in this book is the practice of untouchability, where the protagonist belonged to this social outcast class, ostracized from the mainstream of life.

On the 13th of July @ 6pm in the Ballroom, our guest author is one of our own -- Padmashree Aloysius Prakash Fernandez and his book - “The Myrada Experience - 50 Years of Learning.” The evenings snacks will be sponsored by the Karnataka Goan Association, so you are sure of a feast.

The Madhigattan Encounter @ CC - iBrowse 2

Trekking through the famed Madhigattan forest in the Kodai hills, Ganesh Venkataraman the author of the book - The Madhigattan Encounter, finds himself and his guide hallucinating, under the influence of the aroma emitted by the trees, of the forest. Madhigattan in tamil loosely translated, is a person who has lost his mind.

While on the trip, the author had been ruminating on V.S. Naipaul’s India: a Wounded Civilization. A book that critically discusses the “wounded past” of the Indian sub-continent ignoring its 5000-year history and its contribution to global intellectual wealth, prior to the birth of other modern civilizations. The story teller wonders if it is true that India is indeed a ‘wounded civilization’ and if so, the reasons behind it. Can a country with such shining history be reduced to a shadow of its former self?

The author feels that the Indian race underwent changes in its behavioural pattern, owing to frequent external invasions. These external invasions which started post ancient India, intensified subsequently through the medieval periods and culminated in the colonial rule of

the British. These invasions affected us Indians, not only in terms of our emotional growth but also in our behaviour too. Subsequently, though the sub-continent broke free from the shackles of foreign rule, it still displays a hangover of the colonial past – slavish tendencies imbibed during the medieval rule, negative social attitudes like extreme tolerance towards misrule by the establishment, mass amnesia, short memory, etc.

The novel makes an attempted extrapolation of thoughts of three great leaders, who during their life-time, attempted to steady the race in the Sub-continent. The three great leaders were, Mahatma Gandhi, Swami Vivekananda & Akbar the Great. The question and answer session was heated and interesting, since there were several IAS officers and MLA L Hanumanthiah in the audience. Our author is a senior Income Tax professional in the government of Karnataka. This was the first iBrowse event on the 1st June, the

The Recent Health Club upgrade puts it in par to most international health Club chains that one can walk into in the city, the equipment’s and the standard of trainers have both been immensely beneficial to the Members. As a Member of the Sub-Committee it was always a pleasure to work along with my predecessor who had done most of the weight lifting when the whole upgrade work began, the overall outcome is a reflection of Mr. Tushar Fernandez vision and Passion.

As the Member In-Charge of the Health Club my job has been made easy to start with, as the total upgrade is now complete, Members can enjoy a fully functional Health Club. It also leaves me with the challenge to deliver, and much of this will also rest upon Members. Me along with the current Sub-Committee consisting of Mr. Rizwan, Ms. Maya Bashyam, Ms. Nazreen Varkey and Ms. Deepthi will work towards making the Health Club experience a lot better and much to aspire for. TESTIMONYThis year saw the Catholic Club throw open the doors to a whole new gymnasium. Not only was it extended to accommodate many more Members but we were also greeted with, brand new, state of the art equipment. As the world, around us recognizes health as a number one priority, our Club chooses not to be left behind and in fact has emerged one of the best gymnasiums in the city. Personal trainers available from opening to the end of day, encourage and get us all to push our limits. Thus no one is left behind. A Romp organized once a month builds camaraderie among the Members in an outdoor setting, a welcome break from the usual.

I have been doing aerobics for over 14 years now and one day I realised that I wasn’t losing any more weight no matter what I did. So, after consulting with Suresh I enrolled myself at the Gym and in a matter of just 3 months and thrice a week visits to the Gym I have lost considerable amount of weight. I would like to thank Suresh for mentoring me these last 3 months, pushing me to go beyond my limits and achieve my set goal. Keep up the good work and keep us motivated always.

The year 2017-18, was exciting and a tad bit hectic, as a number of new projects were undertaken. The TalentEase Leadership and Soft Skills programme, is progressing well with over 600 children at the 10 institutions. As I mentioned in the Annual Report and at the AGM – CCOT activities have increased and so has our commitment to the institutions we work with to cater to their various requirements and needs. The Soft skill programme is one of new initiatives taken on this year for that purpose.

The Club annual general body meeting is over and the new committee is in place; similarly, my term has also come to an end.

A big, Thank you to all our Sponsors, the Golf Committee and the ever-willing fellow committee members for your commitment and support. A sincere Thank you to YOU dear members and volunteers for all your help throughout this past year for the Medical check-ups and Children’s Day. Do continue your contribution in any way possible which encourages us in our endeavours to bring back the smile on the faces of the children of over ten institutions that we support.

Regards and God BlessGilroy DsilvaChairperson - CCOT

ESTATE MANAGEMENT

CHAMBERS

BANQUETS

The final month of May the Estate Department had three very significant achievements.

The first was the re location of the garbage disposal area in the Club. We have now carved out this area from the old storage area in the SE corner of the Club, as seen in the photo.

With this the Club Members will not have the agony of seeing the garbage being stored and disposed of, what with the stench and all. It will be now disposed of in an extremely hygienic manner.

The second was the relocation of the generator set from the Southern to the Eastern part of the Club, next to the RMU. A no mean task but handled very by our Electrical consultant Mr. Nagraj who was ably assisted by our ever-reliable staff Dhana Kumar and Manuel. A big thanks to them.

This operation gave us an opportunity to increase our two parking areas. This was done with great gusto by our contractor Ms Innovations ably assisted again by Dhana Kumar and Manuel.

We now have space to park 50 two wheelers. Congrats to all!

I have been entrusted with handling of the chambers in A Block. I accept this whole heartedly. It will be a bit different from the Estate portfolio that I was handling in the last final year. At the present time I do not have any programs and ideas to pen as it has been just a week since I took over.

However, I can assure that I will be concentrating on the three issues of high quality maintenance of rooms, addressing of all issues of the guests and increase in revenue. The coming months will be proof of this.
