president's letterChristine Moffett | President, Board of Directors

Reflecting on this past Memorial Day Weekend, it seemed like no other. It was quiet at the beach and pools, families a plenty were fishing around Woodhaven Lake and kids were pedaling their bikes as fast as they could to race their friends.

I didn't get the opportunity to go to the open air market and make my husband bring back the carload of plants that usu-ally is my tradition to start my gardening season. It may have seemed different, but there was one constant. Family and friends being together enjoying Woodhaven, and when the night fell, you could hear the chatter around the campfires and the familiar campfire smell. I don't know about you, but I love that campfire smell and knowing that the warmth of the fire and the friendship is truly alive at Woodhaven.

I know this has been difficult and trying on everyone's patience with the pandemic limiting what we can do at Woodhaven. My hope is by the time you receive the news-letter more and more of our facilities and recreational activ-ities will be thriving at Woodhaven. Staff has been just as eager and frustrated as you to make the "Into the Wild" Woodhaven 2020 theme happen. Little did we know when

naming the theme for this year it would take on a new definition of "wild." One I hope we do not experience again in our lifetime.

My closing thoughts on this past Memorial Day week-end are ones of pride and gratitude. During the flag ceremony on Memorial Day I witnessed our Veterans in the pouring rain perform the flag ceremony. Standing at attention with their eyes fixed on our flag, they were unwavering throughout the ceremony. I observed true servitude towards our country and I thank each and every veteran for their service.

management report

As we move into July, we will continue to open more amenities and offer more recreation activities. The Covid-19 pandemic has placed a few stumbling blocks in our way; but we are creatively working out plans to make the most of this summer. Our Management team along with your Board of Directors have diligently been working and creating plans for moving ahead. Election 2020

Not sure if you are aware or not? This year is an elec-tion year here at Woodhaven. There are three seats open on the Board of Directors and we have five candi-dates running. We held an Election Committee meeting on Saturday June 13, 2020 via Zoom. This committee is comprised of the candidates, representatives from the standing committees and lastly the Chairperson. This committee provides direction for the candidates.Candidates Forum

The Communications Committee will be hosting a Candidate’s Forum on July 11, 2020; all the details will be coming out shortly. This is your opportunity to meet and ask questions of the candidates running for a seat on your Board of Directors. Questions are to be submit-ted in writing, either in advance, or anytime during the forum. You may email your questions to: [email protected] or drop them off at the Association Office.Audit

The March 31st, 2020 audit process is nearly completed. The fieldwork ended mid-June, and a preliminary report has been presented to the Audit Committee for final review. The Audit Committee will meet on June 27th to discuss relevant issues and recommend final approval of the March 31, 2020 Audit Report. A copy of the short report will be included in the 2020 Annu-al Report, which will be distributed to the Membership in August. We will also post a copy of the full Audit Report on the password protected portion of Woodhaven’s website at www.woodhavenassociation.com. In addition to the Audit Report, we are also working to complete the Association’s tax returns. The returns will be filed on or before July 15, 2020. Real Estate Tax Bills

Paula Meyer, Lee County Treasurer, has provided the Association with a

press release regarding real estate tax bills, due in 2020 for Lee County, IL. A copy of the press release was included in the June issue of the Woodhav-en News. Please review this information and make arrangements to pay your taxes when they are due. The first installment is due June 26, 2020, and the second installment is due September 2nd, 2020. The tax bills were mailed May 22nd; each Property Owner should have received a tax bill for their Woodhaven property. The Lee County real estate tax bill is a separate invoice from your Association assessment, and each Owner is required to make payments directly to Lee County. If the tax bill is not paid, the delin-quent taxes will be offered for sale by Lee County, and the Owner could end up losing their property through the delinquent tax sale process. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your real estate tax bill, please contact the Lee County Treasurers office at (815) 288-4477. Lee County Tax Sale

We have been notified by Joseph Meyer & Associates (Lee County’s Delin-quent Tax Agent), Lee County will potentially offer 33 Woodhaven proper-ties for sale through a sealed bid process later this summer. The rights to these properties were acquired because the real estate taxes for 2016 have not been paid and Lee County now has the option to record a tax deed on these properties. Joseph Meyer & Associates has provided the Association with a list of the lots that may be sold through this process. This list is sub-ject to change because Property Owners of these properties may be able to redeem the delinquent taxes prior to the completion of the sale process. If you are interested in participating and would like to obtain a list of lots offered in this sale, please stop by or call the Association Office to receive this information. Sealed bids will be accepted until 4:30 p.m. on July 17, 2020. Bids can be mailed to the Lee County Treasurer, Meyer & Associates or delivered in person to the Lee County Treasurer’s Office. Meyer & Asso-ciates has set the minimum bid at $816 and will sell each lot to the highest bidder. In addition to other responsibilities, purchasers will be required to pay prorated Association dues from July 17, 2020 to March 31, 2021. Based on the July 17th date, lots with sewer services will pay $960.21 and lots without sewer services will pay $871.96. Sale catalogs will be available for purchase at the Association office. If you have any questions or need more information, please contact Meyer & Associates at (800) 248-2850 or the Lee County Treasurer at (815) 288-4477. Assessment Update & Reminder

For those who are making installment payments, the second installment is due on or before June 30th, 2020 and the third and final payment is due on or before August 31st, 2020. For lots with sewer services the installment payment is $340.00. For lots without sewer services the installment pay-ment is $308.75. Please make arrangements to ensure that your payments are received on time. Leaf and Brush Pick up

Starting on Monday, June 15th Paper Bags Only now-October 31; only leaves, grass clippings, pine needles, and cold ashes may be placed in paper bags at the front of the lot. Each bag should be light enough to be picked up by one person. Brush should be stacked parallel to the road at the front of your lot. Pickup of Landscape Waste is by sign-up only. Sign-up sheets will be located at: The Association Office, Woody’s True Value, and Woodhaven Lakes Mobile App. Each lot to be picked up must be signed up. Questions regarding landscape waste pickup can be directed to the Resource Depart-ment.StellarStellar

Wesley RolsethSection 14, Lot 25 & 27

My name is Wesley Rolseth, my fian-cée is Traci Lamon and we have been proud Woodhaven Property Owners for 8 years. We currently reside in Sandwich, IL for the past 14 years. I personally have been enjoying the tranquility of Woodhaven since 1971. Our 7 children love the family atmo-sphere that Woodhaven provides and we currently have 3 generations enjoying the Woodhaven tranquili-

ty. Our youngest daughter who is 11, completely enjoys exploring all what Woodhaven has to offer from Arts and Crafts to the off beaten paths across Woodhaven. Our favorite part of Woodhaven and all that it has to offer is the enjoyment of meeting new people and our FAMOUS Saturday night dinners with friends and family!

I currently work as Regional Safety Trainer for Asplundh Tree Experts. I have 20 plus years in supervision and project management. I feel that my commonsense approach to situations that arise, ability to manage complex programs, complete honesty and transparency makes me a qualified candi-date for Woodhaven Board of Directors.

Position Statement:I believe 100% that all Property Owners of Woodhaven need to be heard. It

is important to me that all concerns and ideas are addressed from golf carts to Woodhaven investments. As a BOD member, I will not waste Woodhav-en Property Owners hard earned money on projects just because they have been scheduled for years. I don’t vote “yes” just to agree with a project, it needs to be researched, thought out by ALL BOD members, if it doesn’t make sense, I will vote NO!

ESAC and Public Safety have been improved but we still need further improvements. Somethings that are still done make no logical sense; I will work to correct these areas. ESAC and Public Safety does a good job but let’s go from good to GREAT!

If you want an honest and experienced, tell it like it is person, that’s me in a nutshell. I am not a “yes” person for every project presented in front of the BOD. As a BOD member I will know what I am voting on, understand what my vote means and the implications for all Woodhaven Property Owners.

A Summa Cum Laude Graduate of DePaul University, Laura holds a bachelor’s degree in Logistics/Supply Chain, is a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt and member of Alpha Sigma Lambda

National and Golden Key International Honor Societies. Laura is a Manager for Northstar Aerospace and is responsible for over-

sight of all customer contracts (both Military and Commercial) corporate-wide, liability of Govt owned assets/property and is regularly audited by DCMA adhering to very strict Federal Acquisition Regulations.

Laura has been a Board Director for Woodhaven Lakes for the last four years and is currently Treasurer and the Finance Committee Chairperson. She has served as ESAC Board Liaison and Communications Committee Chairperson as well.

In 2018, Laura was elected in Worth as a Trustee. She has oversight of Vil-lage spending, passage of budgets, appropriations, and tax levies. She is also responsible for adoption of ordinances and legislative decisions related to the governance of the Village. Laura is also Chairperson of Waters Edge Golf Club and is responsible for oversight of the operation.

Position Statement:My goal as Board Director is to work together with my fellow board direc-

tors in continuing to assess the current and future states of Woodhaven while being the voice of my fellow Property Owners. We have accomplished so much in the last four years and I am so proud of our current board’s accomplishments.

The days of only knowing your neighbors in your section have changed. Woodhaven is filled with many ‘families’ that have been forged over get togethers that were planned by other Property Owners. In the age of social media, more and more Property Owners communicate on a daily basis throughout the seasons. Our children are now forging friendships that will last them a lifetime. This is why transparency is so critical for the Board and Management with our Property Owners, I think we have done a tremendous job over the last four years in doing so.

Woodhaven is a beautiful place for families to grow. We need to keep it moving forward for generations to come. If you re-elect me, I can assure you, I will continue to be your voice, as I have the last four years.

Marco RodriguezSection 21, Lot 27

My name is Marco Rodriguez and I am a life-long resident of the Woodhav-en Lakes community. As a young child, my family has always enjoyed the beauty of this campground. Our best summers were filled with trips to the beach and pools, fishing, boating, hik-ing, biking and smoky campfires. My wife and I purchased our lot a few years ago, right next to my parents, to continue this tradition.

I currently live in the Chicago neighborhood of Garfield Ridge. I come from a humble family, and I consider myself very fortunate to have been raised by parents who valued hard work and integrity. When my son was born, I raised him to appreciate the simplicity of Woodhaven, and I look forward to the day when he introduces his own children to our summer home.

Professionally, my background is in business management, where I’ve led multidisciplinary and cross-functional teams with strong collaborative, communication and diplomatic skills. I’m a U.S. Navy veteran, recipient of the United States Navy Commendation Medal, and a five-time Triathlete. I served on the Board of Trustees for St. Augustine College for three years and I will complete my MBA from Northern Illinois University in July.

Position Statement:Our country’s current health emergency has many Property Owners con-

cerned over the upcoming summer months and the safety of our shared, common areas throughout the campground. I fully support the Association’s decision to postpone full access to key areas of the campground while the crisis is continuously monitored. I also commend the commitment of our current Association board members for their quick and fair response, and for keeping essential facilities open in a controlled, protected manner. The health and safety of all Property Owners and Woodhaven staff must be a priority, today and in any other given situation.

As a board member of the Woodhaven Lakes Association, I would do my best to uphold the values and mission of the board, promoting the organiza-tion’s guidelines to maintain all that makes Woodhaven what it is, and car-rying its legacy for generations to come.

– 1987.

Position Statement:I learned years ago as President of the Board of Directors of a Property

Owner campground that listening to the lot owners is the only way to do your job right as a board member. As a board we must take fiduciary respon-sibility for the operation of Woodhaven Lakes. The staff manages day to day operations, but we need to be there to support and offer guidance when needed.

I believe a Director needs to be accessible to the Property Owners and listen to what they have to say. We may not always agree, but I will always respect your opinion.

There are always ways to improve Woodhaven and as a Board, that should always be our goal. Change can be difficult, but we always need to look for new ways to improve Woodhaven.

If elected, I will be dedicated to continue an open line of communication with lot owners and staff.

2020 Woodhaven UtilitiesWater Quality Report, PWSID #IL 1035100

About Your Drinking WaterWoodhaven Utilities is pleased to provide you with its 2020 Consumer Confi-

dence Report for Woodhaven Lakes (public water supply ID-IL1035100), which contains important information about your drinking water. The report summa-rizes the quality of water Woodhaven provided in 2019 - including details about water sources, what the water at your tap contains, and how it compares to standards set by regulatory agencies. Although the report lists only those regu-lated substances that were detected in your water, we test for more than what is reported. This report is only a summary of our activities during 2019. If you have any questions about the information in this report, please call Rusty at 815-849-5718.

Your Water SourceWoodhaven Utilities water comes from a ground water supply that has two

wells. Well #1, is a 1,466-foot deep sandstone well that can produce a contin-uous flow of 700 gallons of water per minute, or 1,000,000 gallons per day. In 2019, the total amount of water pumped by well #1 was more than 90 million gallons. This well was drilled in 1971. Well #2 is a 1,504 foot deep sandstone well that can produce a continuous flow of 800 gallons of water per minute or 1.1 million gallons per day. In 2019 the amount of water pumped by well #2 was more than 2 million gallons. This well was drilled in 1991.

Source Water AssessmentThe public water supply wells were sampled as part of the Statewide Ground-

water Monitoring Network on October 13, 1999 and June 4, 2001. The VOC anal-yses performed detected no quantifiable levels of organic chemicals in either well. Based on information obtained in a Well Site Survey published by the Illi-nois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA), only one potential source of con-tamination is located within 1,000 feet of one of the wells. The IEPA has deter-mined that the Water Supply’s source water is not susceptible to contamination. Furthermore, the IEPA has determined that the Water Supply is not vulnerable to viral contamination. The facility has implemented a wellhead protection pro-gram which includes the proper abandonment of potential routes of ground-water contamination and correction of sanitary defects at the water treatment facility. This information will be supplied to the general public through local libraries, community water supplies, and via the internet at http://il.water.usgs.gov/proj/il_swap/index.html.

The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and groundwater wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves natural-ly-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material, and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity.

Drinking water, including bottled water, can reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the USEPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800.426.4791

Contaminants that may be present in source water include:• Microbial Contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria, which can come from sewage

treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations, and wildlife;• Inorganic Contaminants (IOCs), such as salts and metals, which can be naturally

occurring or result from urban storm water runoff, industrial or domestic wastewa-ter discharges, oil and gas production, mining, or farming;

• Pesticides and Herbicides, which can come from a variety of sources such as agricul-ture, urban storm water runoff, and residential uses;

• Organic Chemical Contaminants, including Synthetic Organic Chemicals (SOCs) and Volatile Organic Chemicals (VOCs),which are byproducts of industrial processes and petroleum production, and can also come from gas stations, urban storm water run-off and septic systems; and,

• Radioactive Contaminants, which can be naturally occurring or be the result of oil and gas production and mining activities.

Este informe contiene información muy importante sobre su agua de beber. Tradúzcalo o hable con alguien que lo entienda bien.

To ensure that tap water is safe to drink, the EPA prescribes regulations which limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. Food and Drug Administration regulations establish limits for con-taminants in bottled water which must provide the same protection for public health.

Notes and Definitions:Action Level (AL): The concentration of a contaminant which, if exceeded, triggers treatment or other requirements which a water system must follow.Date of Sample: Some contaminants are monitored less frequently than once a year. If any of these contaminants were detected the last time they were monitored, they are included in the table with the sample date. Level Found: For contaminants with annual or less frequent monitoring, this is the single level detected in the most recent monitoring period. For other contaminants, the level found is the annual average of multiple test results. If multiple locations were tested, the level found is the annual average for the location with the highest level. For Lead and Copper, see notes below table.Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL): The highest level of a contaminant that is allowed in drinking water. MCLs are set as close to the MCLGs as feasible using the best available treatment technology.Lead and Copper Level Found: The 90th percentile detect level from the most recent moni-toring period of all approved sites sampled for each of these contaminants. The number of sites monitored and the frequency of monitoring is determined by the IEPA for every supply. Maximum Contaminant Level Goal (MCLG): The level of a contaminant in drinking water below which there is no known or expected risk to health. MCLGs allow for a margin of safety.Picocuries per Liter (pCi/L): A unit of concentration for radioactive contaminants. ppb: Parts per billion or micrograms per liter – or one ounce in 7,350,000 gallons of water.ppm: Parts per million or milligrams per liter – or one ounce in 7,350 gallons of water.PWSID: Public Water Supply Identification Number.Running Annual Average (RAA): The average of all monthly or quarterly samples for the last year at all sample locations.Range of Detected Levels: The range of values from all tests in 2005 or the most recent monitoring period. For contaminants tested annually or less frequently, only one value is reported. For Lead and Copper, see notes below table.NA: Not applicableND: Not detected

Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the gen-eral population. Immune compromised persons, such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. USEPA/Centers for Disease Control guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available from the USEPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800.426.4791.

Our water systems are designed and operated to deliver water to our customers’ plumb-ing systems that complies with state and federal drinking water standards. This water is disinfected using chlorine, but it is not necessarily sterile. Customers’ plumbing, including treatment devices, might remove, introduce or increase contaminants in tap water. All cus-tomers, and in particular operators of facilities like hotels and institutions serving suscepti-ble populations (like hospitals and nursing homes), should properly operate and maintain the plumbing systems in these facilities. You can obtain additional information from the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800.426.4791.

(a) Iron and manganese are not currently regulated by the USEPA. However the state has set an MCL for these contaminants for supplies serving a population of 1000 or more.(b) There is no state or federal MCL for sodium. Monitoring is required to provide information to consumers and health officials that are concerned about sodium intake due to dietary precautions. People on a sodium-restricted diet should consult a physician about the level of sodium in water they drink.

LEAD: If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. Woodhaven Utilities is responsible for providing high quality drinking water, but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing com-ponents. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.

Dredge Spoils Basin Cleanout Set for July/August

Plans are set for the cleanout of the spoils basin in section 5 south of the Sport sCore area. This

basin has been used for many years in other dredge projects. Sediment from the previous projects will be excavated out of the basin to make room for the material that is scheduled to be dredged from Pine, Hidden and Bluegill Lakes in the spring of 2021.

This work is scheduled to begin during the drier part of the season in July and August. The material will be hauled to 2 locations on property and stock piled for future use. ZBest Enterprises received Board approval to do the work.2020 Mosquito Season Outlook

Mosquitoes and other nuisance insects have been a part of outdoor activities since the dawn of man. Illinois was once known to Easterners as the “Graveyard of the Nation” because such mosquito-borne diseases as malaria were widespread until well into the 1920s. We have come a long way since then in reducing the transmittance of disease such as malaria from mosquitoes, yet some diseases continue to persist.

Populations of mosquitoes fluctuate each year as well as within a single season, depending on local weather conditions. The

2019 season was wet throughout the season, setting up what could have been a very bad year for nuisance mosquito populations. Overall, the season turned out not so bad. With ample moisture through the 2019/20 winter and above average rains throughout the spring, there is once again plenty of standing water for mosquitoes to lay their eggs. The total measured precip-itation for April and May was over 10 inches. All indicators are showing the nuisance mosquito populations could be high this season, so being prepared will make your camping experience better.

No one has any control over weather conditions but we do have some con-trol over other areas in managing mosquitoes. The Association has always taken an active role to help the Property Owner in dealing with mosqui-toes. Property Owners can and should also take steps to further reduce the annoyance of these insects.

One of the keys to reducing the mosquito population in any area is to prevent them from hatching into an adult. The Association contracts with Clarke Mosquito Control, the nation’s leader in mosquito management, to do three aerial applications of a pelleted mosquito larvicide during the season. This larvicide prevents the larvae of mosquito from developing into winged, biting adults. The applications are conducted by means of a helicopter. The first application this season was done May 26. Reapplications are spaced approximately 30 days apart. The larvicide is applied to designated low lying areas of property that are conducive to mosquito development from egg to adult.

As Property Owners, you can also sig-nificantly help in the reduction of mos-quitoes by eliminating containers on your property that hold water for extend-ed periods during the breeding season. Breeding can start in April if conditions are warm. Anything holding water for an extended period (5-10 days) will provide sites for adult mosquitoes to lay eggs. Survey your property to empty, remove, cover or turn upside down any recepta-cle that would hold water; particularly old bottles and cans. Dump bird baths if you will not be around to maintain them on a weekly basis. Be sure to cover watercraft on your lot and take out the plug to allow water to drain from the boat. Investigations of boats that have been left uncovered and filled with water and leaves produce thousands of mosquitoes during the season. Use the mosquito granules or “Mosquito Dunks” available at most hardware stores and garden centers to treat standing water on your lot. Remember to follow label directions carefully.

In addition to the larvicide program, the Association maintains a licensed ground adulticide program to help in the control of the adult mosquitoes that hatch out during the season. This is similar to what most municipalities use in their mosquito control activities. Spraying for the adult mosquito is conducted on an as needed basis during the season with the focus on the weekend and holiday periods. We attempt to assess the mosquito popu-lation throughout the season and schedule spraying accordingly. Spraying provides temporary (2-3 days) relief from mosquitoes as they move from

the surrounding areas off property into Woodhaven. As one might know, it would be virtually impossible to eliminate the

mosquito during the camping season due to our location. Mosquitoes can move up to 20 miles from breeding areas outside of Woodhaven property in search of mammals from which to attain a blood meal. The female mosquito requires the protein from blood for the development of eggs.

When participating in outdoor activities no matter where that might be, one must be prepared for these pest species which, besides being annoying, can also transmit disease. Mosquitoes in Illinois can transmit diseases such as St. Louis and La Crosse encephalitis as well as West Nile Virus. These diseases are normally more harmful to elderly and very young persons. Also, be aware that ticks are present throughout this area and they have the potential to transmit Lyme Disease to humans (see accompanying article). Be sure to dress appropriately and use insect repellants while enjoying the outdoors when mosquito and tick activity is high. Again, remember to sur-vey your property in order to identify anything that holds or could potential-ly hold water in which mosquitoes could lay eggs.

In reality, the mosquito is here to stay. Everyone needs to do their part in dealing with these pests. We are not going to eliminate them but together we can reduce their numbers. Campers must also remember to use other means to prevent getting bit by the mosquito in the form of personal repel-lants and other approved products sold at lawn and garden centers.Canada Goose Management Update

Here is a brief update on the goose nest and egg control for the spring. We managed to locate 12 nests through the season which represented 72 eggs. Our permit from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources allowed up to 60 nests for the season. To date, there were approximately 30-40 gos-

lings that hatched out. Unfortunately, with the Covid 19 causing a shutdown for several weeks, it was at a critical time when the geese were at the peak of nesting so some nests were not located prior to hatching. Thank you to those people who reported nests during the nesting season. Your help in locating nests is greatly appreciated.TICK AWARENESS

Ticks are part of the environment here at Woodhaven and, in fact, they can be found most anywhere even in your own backyard at home. They are not the most pleasant of creatures since they are a bloodsucking par-asite that feed on wild and domestic mam-mals, reptiles, birds and humans. Most of us that have spent time in the outdoors are familiar with ticks.

This article is meant to bring about awareness to those that are not famil-iar with ticks.

Ticks are common in woodland as well as grassy areas. They are not an insect but an arachnid just like spiders with eight legs and 2 body segments. They do not fly. Ticks are usually found from ground level to three feet above ground. They use their front legs to feel/grab a host passing by.

Once the tick finds a host, they will imbed their “head” into the skin and begin sucking blood. The process of sucking blood will take up to several days before they have gotten enough at which time they will drop off the host. It is during the process of feeding on the host that various tick borne diseases are transmitted.

Ticks do carry diseases that can be transmitted to the host usually after having been imbedded for at least 24-48 hours. Some of the common diseas-es are Lyme Disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever as well as types of encephalitis. Most tick

bites do not result in transmission of infection; in the case of Lyme disease only about 2-3% of all persons bitten by Ixodes scapularis i.e. Black legged/Deer tick in areas where the tick is generally found, develops Lyme disease.

If you do find a tick imbedded on yourself or someone else, remove it carefully with fine tweezers. Grab as close to the skin as possible. Do not: squeeze the body, apply Vaseline, use a burnt match, or clean with alcohol while the tick is attached. Any of these actions could cause transmission

The common dog tick found throughout the Midwest. This

species is about the size of a watermelon seed. This species

is not known to carry Lyme disease.

of bacteria. A tick found can be tested for bacteria. Place tick in a glass or plastic vial with a few blades of moist grass. A clean pill vile is good. If none is available, use a Ziploc storage bag as a temporary container.

Be aware of these early signs and symptoms of Lyme’s DiseaseThese signs and symptoms may occur within a month after you've been

infected: • Rash. A small, red bump may appear at the site of the tick bite. This small

bump is normal after a tick bite and doesn't indicate Lyme disease. However, over the next few days, the redness may expand forming a rash in a bull's-eye pat-tern, with a red outer ring surrounding a clear area. The rash, called erythema migrans is one of the hallmarks of Lyme disease. Some people develop this rash at more than one place on their bodies.

• Flu-like symptoms. Fatigue, chills, fever, headache, muscle and joint aches, and swollen lymph nodes

Later signs and symptomsIn some people, the rash may spread to other parts of the body and, sever-

al weeks to months after you've been infected, you may experience: • Joint pain. You may develop bouts of severe joint pain and swelling. Your

knees are especially likely to be affected, but the pain can shift from one joint to another.

• Neurological problems. Weeks, months or even years after you were infected, you may experience inflammation of the membranes surround-ing your brain (meningitis), temporary paralysis of one side of your face (Bell's palsy), numbness or weakness in your limbs, and impaired muscle movement.

The key is early detection, diagnosis and medical attention. If you have found a tick imbedded in you or someone else keep an eye out for signs and symptoms.

For more information on Lyme Disease and other tick related illnesses, go to the Centers for Disease and Control (CDC) website: www.cdc.gov/lyme/signs_symptoms/

Avoiding Tick Bites:Keep Ticks Off of Your Skin• Use insect repellent with 20% - 30% DEET on exposed skin and clothing

to prevent tick bites. Effective repellents are found in drug, grocery and dis-count stores. • Permethrin is another type of repellent. It can be purchased at outdoor

equipment stores that carry camping or hunting gear. Permethrin kills ticks on contact! One application to pants, socks, and shoes typically stays effective through several washings. Permethrin is not to be applied directly to skin.

• Wear long pants, long sleeves, and long socks to keep ticks off your skin. Light-colored clothing will help you spot ticks more easily. Tucking pant legs into socks or boots and tucking shirts into pants will help keep ticks on the outside of clothing. If you'll be outside for an extended period of time, tape the area where your pants and socks meet to prevent ticks from crawling under your clothes.

Don’t let ticks and other species prevent you from enjoying the outdoors. Take the necessary precautions when venturing outdoors.Fish Pictures Wanted!

ESAC CornerSue McGraw, ESAC Administrator

This article was originally published in the August 2019 Woodhaven News. Due to the importance of the information, we wanted to reiterate the infor-mation as you prepare for the construction season.

If you plan to hire a contractor for your construction and improvement projects, here are a few tips from the Illinois Attorney General’s Office:

1. Get all estimates in writing. (We cannot stress enough the importance of this step.)

2. Do not be induced into signing a contract by high-pressure sales tac-tics.

3. Never sign a contract with blank spaces or one you do not fully under-stand.

4. Remember you have three (3) business days from the time you sign your contract to cancel any contract if the sale is made at your home. The contractor cannot deprive you of this right by initiating work, selling your contract to a lender, or any other tactic.

5. If the contractor does business under a name other than the contrac-tor’s real name, the business must either be incorporated or regis-tered under the Assumed Business Name Act.

6. Determine whether the contractor will guarantee his or her work and products.

7. Determine whether the contractor has the proper insurance. 8. Do not sign a certificate of completion or make final payment until the

work is done to your satisfaction.

These basic terms should be included in your contract:1. Contractor’s full name, address and telephone number. Illinois law

requires that persons selling home repair or improvement services provide their customers with notice of any change to their business name or address that comes about prior to the agreed dates for begin-ning or completing the work.

2. A description of the work to be performed.3. Starting and estimated completion dates.4. Total cost of work to be performed.5. Scheduled and method of payment, including down payment, subse-

quent payments and final payments. 6. A provision stating the grounds for termination of the contract by

either party. In addition to the items noted, we suggest requesting references from

your contractor. Remember the lowest bid is not necessarily the best bid if the materials used are not of the same quality, size, etc. as another contrac-tor’s bid. Be sure you are comparing apples to apples.

The ESAC Office can also advise a Property Owner if a contractor has received any written complaints against them. The key word is “written.” Complaints made verbally or on the internet are not official and cannot be tracked by the Association. If you do have a problem with a contractor, we strongly urge you to complete a Speak Up Sheet. While Woodhaven Associa-tion and the ESAC Department cannot be responsible for the work complet-ed, left uncompleted or agreements made either written or implied between Property Owners and contractors, we will contact the contractor about the matter and place a copy of the Speak-Up Sheet in their file.

The more homework a Property Owner does prior to signing on the dotted line, the more likely they are to have a smooth experience with a contractor.

When a major catastrophic event strikes a community, what most often emerges is a strong sense of teamwork, camaraderie, and compas-sion amongst community members. Such has definitely been the case at Woodhaven. But what also comes to light are areas in which need improve-ment so the community is better prepared for future emergency situations.

At Woodhaven, one of the things that became apparent very quickly fol-lowing the 2015 tornado was a large number of Woodhaven’s original indi-vidual property addresses, which are the Section and Lot numbers, were deteriorated beyond readability or completely missing. This made it diffi-cult through the initial search and recovery process for emergency respond-ers to quickly and readily identify Sections and Lots.

When Woodhaven was developed back in the early 1970s, individual lot numbers were placed on the electric pedestals in 2-inch orange and black vinyl numbers with adhesive backing. As can be expected through 40 plus years of being subjected to Illinois weather, many are faded, deteriorated or missing altogether.

Yes, many Property Owners have beautiful, handcrafted signs indicating the Section and Lot, and those are great. But, when it comes to emergency situations, consistency is the key. Emergency responders need a consistent place to help identify properties and it has been determined the best place for this is where the developer placed the original property numbers—on the electric pedestals.

Woodhaven’s Communications Committee is once again asking for each individual Property Owner’s help. Please take a few minutes to check the numbers on your pedestal to ensure they are affixed to the pedestal; they are legible (from the road, if possible); and they are the correct identify-ing numbers. Many pedestals are located in areas on lots where numbers may not be seem from the road; however, it is still important for emergency responders walking the property to know they can still find a Section and Lot on the electric pedestal for easy identification.

If you find your Section and Lot numbers are missing from the electric pedestal or need refreshing, these 2-inch vinyl reflective numbers can be purchased at Woody’s True Value and at most hardware or home improve-ment stores. At Woody’s, the 2-inch numbers are .89 cents each and the 3-inch numbers are .99 cents each. Remember, the bigger the better!

One item of note, the developers did not place Section numbers on the pedestals, only Lot numbers. The Communications Committee is asking that Property Owners who refresh or replace missing numbers also include the Section numbers on the pedestals. This is especially important in areas where it can be difficult to determine what Section a responder is in.

Small, Simple Improvements Can Equate to Better Emergency Responsiveness

Original Section Numbers Located on Electric Pedestals

Here is the pedestal with the refreshed numbers and the Section identified in the middle. The section numbers are 3-inch vinyl reflective and the lot numbers are 2-inch vinyl reflective. These were

purchased at Woody's True Value Hardware Store.

For a nominal cost to each Property Owner, replacing the Section and Lot numbers on each property’s electric pedestals can go a long way in greatly improving emergency efforts and efficiency in future situations.

To encourage Property Owners to refresh their Section & Lot numbers on the electric pedestals, the Communications Committee is offering a prize raffle give-a-way to all who complete the project. To enter, simply send a photo of the newly refreshed numbers on your meter pedestal to [email protected] or send the photo through messenger on Woodhaven’s Official Facebook Page at Facebook.com/woodhavenlakes before October 12, 2020. One grand prize winner will receive a weather radio and 5 runner-ups will win a $20 Woody, Inc. Gift Certificate. Good luck and get out and refresh those numbers!

Summer’s start has been a little different in 2020, but the outdoors and nature are still around! July will hopefully bring great weather to walk a trail around Woodhaven. If you haven’t walked any of the trails, I highly suggest trying this year! We have a variety of ecosystems to walk through: an early morning walk through the prairie grasses listening to the crickets and grass-hoppers; a mid-day stroll through the woods in the shade of the tall oaks and maples; or relaxing by the ponds watching the birds fly by.

The Nature Center is continuing to add to the website at https://woodhav-enassociation.com/nature-center/ . Whether it is information about plants and animals, ticks, fishing fun, and more; we will carry on adding videos, photos, details, and fun activities throughout the summer and more. Also, if you have any nature questions or pictures you would like to send in, visit the “ask a naturalist” page of the website and send them through the email!

Continuing with our summer plans, the Nature Center has scheduled a fun season of nature fun! During the month of July, we have scheduled some great programs and presenters. While these programs are scheduled, depending on the restrictions that are in place at the time of the program, we may or may not be able to offer them. However, we are working on the details of how we may be able to offer them in other ways over the internet like the Traveling World of Reptiles program from Memorial Day weekend. If you missed this program, visit the ‘nature videos’ section of the Nature Center website to view it. Upcoming planned programs in July include: Bri-an Fox Ellis on July 4th with “Adventures in Nature”; Flying Fox Conservation Fun with their program on “Bats” on July 11th, “Native American Star Sto-ries campfire on July 18th with Brian Fox Ellis, and a “Star Party on July 25th with our Woodhaven Star Gazers and the Popular Astronomy Club of the Quad Cities. And for Main Event weekend we have Hoo Haven with a few of their raptors ‘flying’ in for a visit with their friends. Again, please remember that we may have to view these programs in an alternate way but we’ll keep you all informed through the Woodhaven Facebook page and Leisure Times so stay tuned.

Moon-Month Names: For years, Native Americans and Europeans have named the months after various seasons in the Northern Hemisphere con-nected to the Full Moon. July is known as the “Buck Moon” because it is during this time that a buck’s antlers are in full growth mode. There are other names for this month including “Thunder Moon” because thunder-

storms are frequent during July; “Raspberry Moon” and “Salmon Moon” to name a few. The Buck Moon will be at its fullest on July 4, at 11:44 p.m. central time so plan to stay up late if you want to watch.

July moons have significant history. On July 28-31, 1964 the Ranger 7 spacecraft launched and was suc-cessful at taking the first US close-up pictures of the

Alyssa Rod, Nature Center Coordinator

moon. Ranger 7 sent back 4,316 images before crashing into the moon on the northern rim of the Sea of Clouds. These images were important for the moon landing five years later as it helped to identify safe moon landing sites for the Apollo astronauts.

On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first person to step foot on the Moon! During this time, Armstrong placed the U.S. flag on the moon. The Apollo 11 mission was to land astronauts on the Moon and return them safely to Earth. The crew consisted of Neil Armstrong, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, Jr, and Michael Collins and their shuttle launched on July 16, 1969. After their visit to the moon which included the first time humans walked on the moon and the first words on the moon, the astronauts came back to Earth on July 24, 1969. Those words were “Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.” Apollo 11 Commander Armstrong and pilot of the lunar mod-ule “Eagle” Aldrin Jr landed in Mare Tranquilitatis (the Sea of Tranquility) while command module pilot Michael Collins continued orbiting the Moon in the command module “Columbia.” Once landed, they prepared the space-craft to lift off and return to orbit in case they needed to leave quickly. Then Armstrong stepped onto the lunar surface on July 20 at 9:56 p.m. CDT with the words, “That’s one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind.” Aldrin followed 19 minutes later. They spent 21 hours, 36 minutes on the moon’s surface.

Garden Time: July is our hot and dry month with thunderstorms at times. So make sure that your gardens are getting enough water for the plants to survive (but don’t overwater). During average temperatures, about 1” per week is needed, with more in extreme heat and drought. Other ways to help your yard is to raise the blade on your lawn mower to around 3”. This helps the grass retain moisture and keep it looking greener and healthier with less watering. This could be the start of harvest for some of your early season crops like beans, tomatoes, and peppers.
