Spring 2008 PRESIDENT’S POSTING reetings on behalf of the 2008 Board of Directors. Fyles P The S G e challenges of another year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Will Teron for his tremendous work on behalf of the CFBA last year and I am pleased to have him involved as Past President this year. Will has agreed to represent the CFBA with the ongoing work towards a revised Farm Building Code. Our second big challenge is the development of our new strategic plan. I encourage all members to participate in this process. Please feel free to contact myself, Mike Parker, or any of the Directors with your ideas and input. W ill obviously have on us it is more important than ever for our membership to utilize the resources of the CFBA. Our greatest resource is our people. Not just our staff and directors but all the relationships that exist within our membership. Interaction at CFBA Seminars, Social events and the Annual Meeting will only strengthen your ongoing business practices. The CFBA has recognized the importance of these relationships and so for this year we intend to focus more on offering a more social approach to our events including our Annual General Meeting. While holding the Annual Meeting in Toronto with the Farm Equipment Show has served us well in the past there are feelings that re-locating the meeting will help in attendance. A more social program will hopefully bring more members to the meeting and having potentially a partners program as well will make this a family event. The strength of the CFBA will continue to grow as participation by the membership increases. If there are topics that you would like dealt with or if you would like the CFBA to look in different direction I encourage your participation and I can be reached at anytime. An overview of CSAO’s Program - Managing Health & Safety in Construction -provided by Bill Feeney to members present at the CFBA conference Feb 07, 2008. The reason for this program from CSAO's perspective comes from an observation that some companies have bought or developed a safety program that ends up sitting on a shelf somewhere. Although these companies can say they have a program, they are not making it work. What is required is a commitment to integrate a safety program into the everyday management of the company. The agenda for the presentation addressed the following issues:

1. Why manage health & safety 2. How to manage health & safety 3. Getting started.

The main topics included:

Benefits of managing health & safety Potential impacts of an accident Steps required when implementing a health & safety program Strategies for effective management of health & safety

Ontario has one of the best construction health & safety records in the world. Owners & managers of construction companies can do their part by first making a commitment through the firm’s health & safety policy, and then by developing an effective program to implement that policy.

COCA Presentation to CFBA

On February 7, 2008 COCA President David Frame presented a briefing at the Canadian Farm Builders Association’s Annual General Meeting. COCA represents 37 member associations across the province. These member associations fund our organization through membership fees and drive our agenda through participation on our Board of Directors and our various policy committees. Gary van Bolderen represents the CFBA on the COCA Board. Mr. Frame’s presentation focused on the priorities of the newly re-elected Liberal government; education, taxes, poverty, infrastructure, manufacturing support, budgets, municipalities and health care. He went on to describe the priority issues that COCA plans to pursue with the government. These priorities include:

• Reforms to the Construction Lien Act • Government commitment to infrastructure • WSIB coverage for all construction workers • Address long term skills requirements

Mr. Frame explained the importance of each priority and outlined COCA’s strategy to engage the provincial government to address each one. For your copy of Mr. Frame’s presentation please contact Sue Ramsay at [email protected]
